Jason was very polite the the work he did was excellent and the price was reasonable, Jason showed up on time he worked Long hours, left house clean. He let us know when we could move appliance back into kitchen. Told us he will be back to seal tile and install trim. I would not hesitate to recommend him to a friend or have do other work that I'm not capable of doing. And. Before hiring him I didn't know him at all. He asked for 20% then said he didn't need it I gave it to him after first day and offered more he refused it. Great job jason

Sebastian was very prompt and professional. He was asked to silicone toilets and a backsplash. I thought that the backsplash turned out well. His workmanship on the toilets however was quite crude - not at all what I had expected or seen of other jobs and hard to fix once that silicone was laid down (see photo). I also had to supply painter's tape - not something which was communicated beforehand and something that I hasten to think buyers should need to know else they can expect worse results. I have contacted The Service Guys in the hopes of having at least one toilet re-siliconed (where I have already cut away some of the excess silicone that missed the gap, making it an easy touch up). I will update if that happens.

We hired Matt to refinish/staining our dresser and other small cabinet. Even though staining/refinishing furniture is not his main area he seems to have good knowledge/skills to do the job and he did really a good job. He listened to what we wanted and he delivered.

Daniel and his guys did a great job installing oak hardwood floors in our 1,600 sq ft home. He also removed the previous tile, blue stone, replaced two sections of rotten subfloor, and leveled the surface. Overall it was 7 plus days for multiple guys and I feel he charges a fair price. I've already recommended him to my in-laws as they are updated the floors in their basement. Daniel is a great guy and you should definitely use him if you want a quality job for a good price.

James and his team were very professional. James always gave us options based on what we requested and it made us feel that he was being fair and not trying to make a quick buck. The work completed was well done the major renovation was the master bathroom. Our bathroom looks fabulous! Tile work well done and just a clean, good look. Will refer Global Housing always and will certainly call on them again for our next project.

As first time home buyers, we had difficulties getting quotes. TNS was the first company to give us a quote and lay out exactly what we were paying for at a fair price. They also did not request any money until they were able to start the job (which I think is a best practice). They kept us informed on the progess of work that wouls be completed each day. Their work is of high quality and they executed on what we were looking for. The team we met were professional and now we can finally enjoy our bathroom without looking at the yellow and green tiles from the 70's! We would definitely recommend TNS.

Complete bathroom renovation. Demolition, removal, new walls, all new fixtures and tub plumbing, custom built-in cabinetry, and porcelain tile floors. Glenn and partner measured meticulously and finished everything when they said they would without damaging stair and hallway. Couldn't have asked for more for this cramped upstairs renovation in our older home.

Marco came on time and worked so hard! He is very meticulous about the tile work he performed, (which I, as an OCD, wannabe perfectionist appreciate) and the end result was amazing! I am very happy with his work and his work ethics are commendable. His pricing is beyond fair, if you hire him you won't regret.

When I destroyed my linen chair with a big blob of dark chocolate ganash, which I, of course made worse by not only unknowingly sitting on it and mashing it in, but attempting to remove the stain myself, I was more than a little upset. It was one of a pair of virtually new chairs, and if I couldn’t get the stain out I would have to recover both chairs, since I would never be able to match the material. And it would be very expensive to reupholster 2 chairs. I was sick about it. This could cost me a small fortune if I couldn’t get the stain out. I called two stain removal companies. The first one came, looked at the chair, and said they wouldn’t touch it. Ugh! The next day Phil, from SurfaceSpa, showed up and said he thought he could do the job and took the chair away. I admit I didn’t have much hope since the other guy wouldn’t even give it a try. A few days later, Phil returned with my chair in pristine condition- THE STAIN WAS COMPLETELY GONE! It looked exactly like its mate. I was so thrilled and surprised that I couldn’t help but give him a big hug. Not only was I thrilled that he was able to save my chair, but I nearly fell over when he told me what he was going to charge me. He had given me a quote in our email exchanges, but somehow I had missed it and so had no idea what I was going to be charged beforehand. In fact, it was so inexpensive that I made him take 50% more (I honestly think he SHOULD have charged me at least 5 times more than he did- and it would still be a bargain!), and lectured him that he wasn’t charging me enough! We got to talking, and it turns out that Phil has a “thing” for stains, and enjoys the challenge. He’s got quite a lot of experience and success under his belt. Do not hesitate in calling Phil if you have any type of stain. ANY TYPE on ANY SURFACE. Read his website and you’ll learn that he doesn’t only work his magic on cloth, but tile, concrete- just about anything with a stain! Thanks again, Phil! I am so happy to have found you, and am delighted to be able to give you a glowing review! You more than deserve it!

Tom took on an unusual project for us. He used his extensive art background and talent to custom paint and install new outlets and switchplates covers to perfectly match our marble tile kitchen backsplash. The work looks gorgeous, and Tom is a delightful man to deal with. His business includes tile work, masonry, and carpentry. We intend to have him back to take on additional projects in our home.

We hired KI Renovations for a tiling project in our basement. It was not a straightforward job as the tiling only needed to be replaced around the perimeter after a french drain installation. KI Renovations did a great job overall, providing good value and finishing in only 1 1/2 days. Klarens and his team were professional and nice to work with. We would definitely hire them again.

A few days ago I had a new stove delivered while they delivered it to my kitchen they suddenly said that the connection required a license electrician. Thank God for Thumbtack and Mike. He answered quickly what's Pleasant and efficient with a sense of humor and was here all of 20 minutes. I would recommend his work to anyone who is tired of contractors who take hours to do a simple task or who overcharged I felt that his rate was good and I fully intend to use him again if I have additional electrical needs. He's on the permanent Rolodex

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.
