Words cannot begin to describe how happy we are with the talent and pure decorative artistic ability of Mary and Unique Home Staging and Design. Mary came into our house that is for sale and staged the home for us using her own materials (all of our furniture and accessories had been moved out). In a matter of hours, she transformed the rooms into beautifully decorated and accessorized spaces, like something out of a magazine. She focused on every detail, big and small, and her ability to blend the colors of the rooms to the furniture and decorations looked like something out of a magazine. We plan to use Mary's talents in our new home as she has such a true gift of interior decorating and design!

Anna and her team were AWESOME! From my initial contact to the completed project, she was professional, courteous, prompt and thorough. I contracted with A2 Solutions to paint the entire interior of our first floor, foyer and upstairs hallway. Ceilings, walls, trim and steps. Her team painted everything with such precision. They removed several wall mounted items, blinds as well as removed screws and nails and patching those up. The job was complete and meticulous. And the pricing was competitive and fair. You will not be disappointed. I've already recommended them for future work and I would call them again for future work

If there were a lifestyle magazine called “Single Dude Living,” my old apartment would have been a centerfold. My new place, however, should be in The New York Review of Books. In my first conversation with Amy I said I’d like to have a place where when people see it for the first time they say, “Wow, look what you did with the place.” Amy said that’s exactly what I’m going to get, and I can attest she delivered 100% on that promise. I have my own slice of Manhattan in a cozy place on the Main Line. Amy couldn’t have been more responsive and communicative throughout the process; she exudes confidence; has a wonderful sense of humor; she listened to my ideas; and I believe she struck the proper balance between being assertive with her professional take on the project and incorporating my tastes/style/wants etc. The size of this project (a small, one-bedroom apartment) didn’t dictate Amy’s level of involvement or enthusiasm. She gave my place more attention than I could have asked for. I lived at my prior apartment for close to four years. I haven’t been in the new place a month yet and I feel more at home already than I ever did in my previous place. An apartment isn’t just the framed pictures on your wall or the food in your fridge; it’s a reflection of yourself, and Amy was able to bring that out in interior design form in a way I would have never been able to do myself, even with an unlimited budget. It gives me great pleasure to post another 5-star review for Amy in hopes it brings her more business, because I am living in a 5-star apartment. Treat yourself to your own 5-star space and hire Amy.

Michele is very personable and knowledgeable in her skill set. She helped us pick paint colors for our row home in Philly! We now have an appt with a painter in a few days! I appreciate all of her suggestions and will likely reach out to her in the future for other home design/styling projects.

Meg was great! We have an odd shaped living room so she helped us design what kind of furniture to buy and where to put it. When the furniture came in it was a bit bulkier than we thought and original plan didn't work but Meg came back over and helped us trouble shoot until it all worked out. Honestly we think our room looks better now than our original plan. Highly recommended.

Dee is AMAZING!!!! We hired her to redesign our dining room. She has created "us" in our dining room. It is stunning!! We then worked with her on our family room. We finally feel our house is our home and represents us to a "T"! She has impeccable taste. She stayed within our budget and was always helpful. Not only did I gain a true love for my home, I gained a friend as well. I would highly recommend her and I hope to have her do our master bedroom eventually.

I hired Robin to help me with updating 18 yr.old townhouse I downsized to. I have changed my preferences from traditional to a pared down contemporary look. Robin is helping me with this transition by planning work in phases so I can budget ,color scheme selection, repositioning of current furniture and guidance about new purchases. She is highly professional, realistic, style versatile and very importantly -practical about my needs. She is not like other designers I have encountered who charge exhorbitant rates or require you to buy products. She is truly a design consultant and customer focused. Her rates are very reasonable -whether you want her help with a small project or a complete design and project management of a whole house remodel. I am still working with her on my next project - I highly recommend her.

Working with Ali and her team was a very pleasant experience. I had some anxiety about working with an interior designer based on some prior bad experiences. However this experience was quite the opposite; Ali was awesome! She incorporated my vision in the design for the space, remained on budget and used some existing pieces that I couldn't give up. I absolutely love my living room/dinning room combination. I look forward to having her return for an update to my family room.

I hired Linda to help me downsize from a four bedroom, two story home to a two bedroom apartment in a retirement community. It was a huge task. She drew a floorplan of my new home and helped me decide what I could take. It made the process much less stressful. She helped me objectively sort out what was in my house and how to liquidate everything I did not need. I was so happy I hired her as a design consultant when I wanted to purchase new furniture.

I've worked with Linsey several times in the last few months - she has been my go-to for refreshing the decor my home and helping me finding my exact interior style. She is able to deliver the dream pieces we all crave to have in our home but at a much more pocket friendly price point. My husband has even agreed that her help in styling our home has significantly improved the overall vibe when welcoming guests/our own moods while we are home. A space that is pulled together and inviting makes such a positive impact. In addition to this, I've also sought out her help for providing the most adorable/innovative bridal shower favors for my friend's special day. Linsey's airplant holders were the talk of the party, and everyone wanted to know more. I HIGHLY recommend Linsey for any interior styling needs and as a go-to for creative, thoughtful pieces to decorate your home with - her work is truly a conversation starter!

I was in a pinch for a set of blueprints needed to submit to the city and needed them asap. My entire job could not move forward without them. I spoke with Dale on the urgency of the matter along with several other design services. LET ME TELL YOU. Dale Graham knows his stuff, he was able to take my details over the phone and fill in all the gaps I couldnt communicate. The other guys had no idea what I was even asking for! Not only was the final product a total sucess, but it was completed above and beyond a timely manner. As a Thumbtack pro myself I knew exactly where to turn and could not be happier. Dale Graham Cad Design Services is now the go to company for Bulletproof Welding LLC. Thank you Dale!

Pam created an artistic scheme for rooms that were decorated thirty years ago. While retaining classic elements from the previous design, Pam added sophistication, and a lively palette. The room radiates happiness and splendid light. Pam is a truly talented designer.

Tanika has done an outstanding job. We were trying to sell our house for the longest and finally we decided to look for a designer or home stager to at least help us put together the house and she showed us so many things that can help catch a buyer's eye. Tanika even design several rooms for us in our new home and we can't wait for our install date. Overall she is really calm and understanding and she takes her time with you through deep decision making.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

      • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
      • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
        • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
      • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
        • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
      • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
      • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
