I was looking for a caterer to make a Scandinavian smorgasbord for a memorial service. Ellen's level of expertise and attention to detail was far higher than I expected. She knew a great deal about the food. She cured the gravlox herself, brined the herring from scratch, found the correct cheese all the way from Chicago, and baked the Swedish crackers (knackebrod). She was on time and everything was beautifully laid out. She arranged to have assistants with her who were personable, flexible, and energetic. She also gave me guidance and suggestions on renting silverware, plates, and other needed items. It was overall a very good experience. There were two things about it that were slightly challenging for me. The first was that communication was primarily by text and through the Thumbtack website. Aside from one brief phone conversation, I had no other contact with her until we met in the middle of the event, when we were both running in opposite directions. I think this is probably the norm for younger folks, but was foreign and a little disconcerting for me --I guess I'm an older-folk. The other was that after a small deposit, she required to be paid in cash. I can see how this works well for her and it may be the norm in the New York area, but I am from the west coast and had never encountered it before. On the highly emotional day of a memorial service, it was disconcerting to be carrying a large wad of hundred dollar bills. In the end, as you can see from my rating, we were very pleased with the food and service.

I was given Tamara's information through the venue my event was held at. She took a very last minute request for about 100 people, and set up the evening's order instantly. Given her rave reviews on Thumbtack and Yelp, I felt pretty confident that the food and service would be great... which is an absolute understatement! Tamara and her team showed up on time and ready to get to work. She had a great crew with her, very engaging with the guests, and the food was AMAZING. The only downside was that I didn't get to eat more of it - would have hovered over the serving table if I could have :) I hope I have a chance in the future to have Tamara and her team back for another event. Until then, I would absolutely recommend her for your next catered event. :)

Tyler and his team have been bartending and running my Holiday Party for many years. They consistently go above and beyond and always do a fantastic job. In addition to making the best Bloody Mary I and my guests have ever had, they organized my party incredibly well, made sure everyone's glasses were always filled and kept food and other items stocked and organized. In short, they allowed me to enjoy my own party. They are incredibly easy to deal with and very flexible. I give them my highest recommendation and would not have a party without them.

We loved the services and food catered by Kulinary Kings. They catered food for our 125 guest consisting of a variety of backyard BBQ foods. Our guest loved the roasted corn, the salmon pasta salad and the macaroni and cheese and chicken and beef skewers to name a few. Even more than the food, the service was great- we also requested servers and a bar tender and I must say all were on point and attentive to our guest. I would recommend This cater and will definitely use him again!

My husband has very high standards for food and service, and Francis performed masterfully! First of all, he showed up promptly when he said he would and proceeded to make my small kitchen his workplace. We celebrated our wedding anniversary with close friends out on our covered patio while it lightly sprinkled rain outside. Francis served 11 people a 3-course meal on time following a couple speeches. We ate baked sea scallops, veal Provençal, creme brûlée and a lemon meringue tart! The sea scallops were very delicious in their cream and mushroom sauce. The veal Provençal was cooked to perfection--very juicy, yet tender--along with potatoes and asparagus. The asparagus was very well chosen and didn't have any of the tough stalks mixed in. One of our guests couldn't finish both her desserts so Francis packed it for her take home. I would definitely recommend Francis for intimate dinners at your home or other locations. He has a high sense of professionalism and a genuine spirit that wants your gathering to be fabulous and relaxed for you. I've already been discussing with my family when the next time is when we'll have Francis cook for us! We loved it!

Nick from F.I.G. Catering was an awesome one man show! We had an event of about 40 people and everyone raved about the food. He came prepared with more than enough food, beautiful serve ware and was more than happy to tweak items for guests with diet restrictions. He also was more than happy to jump in and help with other items that were outside the scope of the menu we discussed like cutting the cake etc. I’m so happy we went with Nick and his company and would definitely recommend.

I could not be more satisfied with JP's work. For a week or two leading up to my networking event, JP communicated with me regularly and with great responsiveness to make sure everything went perfectly. I wanted to make sure we had enough food for 50 guests within a tight budget. To be honest, I was worried we would run out, but JP made it work while providing exceptional quality. All of my guests were wowed by his simple, yet impressive hors d'oeuvres. His work ethic at the event was above and beyond. And to top it all off, JP is a great guy. Doing business with JP felt like doing business with a good friend. The level of trust and willingness to go beyond his job description really show why JP is the guy to go to. I would highly recommend JP and will be pursuing his service again for a similar event in the spring. Thank you, JP!

Having the team at Be My Guest prepare and deliver our meals for us each week has been nothing but a pleasure. We used to have to go to the grocery store on the weekends (at the busiest times, it seemed), spend our time and money where we didn't want to, and somehow still have wasted food at the end of the week. Chef Manzo knows the perfect blend of taste and keeping with a clean-eating diet, and using Be My Guest has allowed our busy weeks to become less hectic. I would recommend Be My Guest to anyone who is looking for an alternative option to going grocery shopping every week, or is tired of having to prepare lunches/dinners every day!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
