My daughter has been taking violin lessons with David since she was 9 years old; and more recently, she has started classical, acoustic guitar lessons the summer before entering college. He is a dedicated professional and diligent in making sure his students learn correct technique and become more musical in their own personal way. More importantly, David has the ability to keep his lessons fun and varied! Her lessons have always been highlights of my daughter's week! I recommend David without hesitation.

I started cello lessons with Peter in 1990 at age 44, and it was the most brilliant thing I have ever done. Peter is a very gifted teacher who brings a special sensitivity to his students. He is very perceptive so that he is able to home in on technical and musical issues, tweak them, and in the process one feels the joy of discovery. Thanks to starting to learn the cello with Peter, I quit an unpleasant job and opened my own business, and I never looked back. I continue to study with Peter. He is an inspiration.

I consider myself very lucky to have found Kirin McElwain for a cello teacher. I learned more in one lesson than I have in the past ten years tyring to teach myself. She's an incredible instructor and incorporates concepts into her lessons that are essential for proper cello playing and technique. Every time I have a lesson with her I feel a huge sense of accomplishment. I plan on taking lessons with Kirin for years to come.

We feel so lucky to have Ken as our daughter's cello teacher. He has a gift for connecting with kids, finding creative, clever ways to motivate them, and believing in every child's potential to improve and grow musically. He has a wonderful, fun, calm, friendly way, yet he keeps the lessons very focused and he knows how to draw out the best from his students. We hope he'll be able to teach our daughter for many years to come.

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How hard is it to learn to play the cello?

Taking cello lessons can be a rewarding experience for students young and old. The rich sound of the cello is well-loved in classical music and is found in all genres of contemporary music from modern folk to rock. As with any instrument, how hard it is to learn to play cello depends on the practice and dedication you put into it. It’s true that some people are naturally more adept at learning instruments than others, but with lessons and a daily commitment, you too can learn to play the cello.

Cello lessons can be a smart investment, especially for new players. Even professional cellists benefit greatly from ongoing training, but for those new to cello it’s especially important for forming a strong foundation for playing. From the proper posture to understanding finger positions, regular cello lessons give you a benchmark to measure your daily practice against. With a professional cello teacher guiding you, the sky’s the limit.

            How much are cello lessons?

Cello lessons are a great way to anchor and guide your cello practice, regardless of your skill level. From top symphony performers to first-time music students in elementary school, cello lessons correct your flaws and help your strengths shine. The cost of cello lessons will vary, depending on the reputation and experience of your teacher, the length and frequency of your lessons, and where you live. Students who have regularly scheduled lessons and pay in advance often pay less per lesson than drop-in students who schedule lessons as needed. Here are some examples of average cello lesson costs:

            • 30-minute cello lesson: $30, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
              • Cost for drop-in lesson: $35.
            • 45-minute cello lesson: $35, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
              • Cost for drop-in lesson: $40-$45.
            • 60-minute cello lesson: $40, when a minimum of 4 lessons per month are pre-paid.
