The food was Fabulous. The caterer was late and didn't tell me that she doesn't provide heating trays or any utensils etc. I didn't ask about those things because all the other caterers supply them and I just assumed she would as well. Otherwise, Ellen is a very nice person and did a great job. I was happy with the food and service.

Chef Chris & team were amazing! I requested a tapas dinner with wines pairing for ten people at my NYC apartment. Planning, Food, Service & Clean up were all top notch. Chef was very creative with six diverse courses and his sommelier prepped, paired & explained the wines perfectly. My guests were WOWED! I would recommend Chris & his team for your next party / event.

I found Bacco Caterers on Thumbtack. I was impressed with the five stars and the reviews, so I contacted Chef Lauren to begin to see if she was the caterer for us—and was she ever! Joyce and I wanted to include our friends and family in our marriage anniversary celebration in our Brooklyn home. We are novice Open House hosts and Lauren advised us re details we would never have thought of, including in our menu selections. Her staff, chef Amanda and sous chef Laura, created freshly made hors d’hoeuvres in our kitchen as the party occurred, superb finger food that was varied, interesting, and delicious! People, including us, loved it. The servers Karen, Tony, and Kevin, and bartender Elroy were unobtrusively attentive and friendly to our guests. Our party took place on two floors and the yard, and the staff kept the food appearing and the empty glasses disappearing with seeming effortlessness. Many guests commented on how comfortable they made everyone feel, contributing to the general sense of joyousness. In spite of our request for no gifts, or perhaps because of it, many of our 50 guests brought flowers. As soon as I was handed the bouquets, Tony would appear and would arrange them in vases I had directed him to when flowers first arrived. I was free during the whole party to visit with my friends and family. I, who am not a party-person, enjoyed myself fully during this celebration, and I am grateful to Chef Lauren and her staff for the many ways (including a fantastic clean-up) they helped make that possible. Rich came and cooked an Italian style meal for my birthday party at our home. We had over ten adults and ten kids and Rich catered really well towards everbodies wishes, appetizers vegetarian dishes, meat and pasta dishes... Terrific grilled pesto shrimp, home made hummus and dressings, lovely salad, super tender chicken etc etc. Kids loved the fresh baked cookies for desert and Rich really made sure everything was well presented during dinner and he left my kitchen spotless. Could not have been happier!

I used Tamara for my engagement party and she was fantastic! I had about 60 people and we started with passed h'ourderves during a cocktail hour in one room (she provided the staff and a bartender). While this happened she was setting up the buffet dinner in another room. She let me know when it was ready and then (timing was flawless) we moved into the second room for dinner. My friends and family raved about the food, which included gluten-free and vegan options as many had dietary restrictions. We had a French theme as I had gotten engaged in France and Tamara worked with me on a French menu, including a delicious chocolate-hazelnut crepe desert with fresh berries. She was totally on-point with timing, presentation, and professional execution, including proactively handling things like insurance with the building so it wasn't a hassle for me. The reason I initially chose her was because she was more reasonable than the other bids I received for caterers in New York but she offered identical services to what they had proposed and she went the extra mile the day of the event. I will definitely be using her again and I would highly recommend her to anyone. I am still receiving compliments on her food and the friendliness/professionalism of her staff.

Chef Wayne hands down provided my " now " Fiance and I with one of the most fantastic meals we have ever had. The seared steak was cooked to perfection and the onion jam on top of it, wow, feLt like I could eat it with anything. So delicious! Chef was also generous enough to record me proposing to my girlfriend. We ended the night with our families surprises my girlfriend and the chef had dessert for 10 and champagne already prepared just waiting for the cue.5 stars around the board. Can't wait to have another meal!

Adolfo and his team catered my mother's 60th Surprise Birthday Party for 15ppl in her apartment. It was an absolute success!!! the food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. the flavor profiles as each course came out complimented the ones before. it was a cohesive menu that we both worked on preparing. the favorites of the night were the mini grilled cheese with the tomato soup shot and the duck wraps. The mini lobster rolls were tasty and we took the leftover lobster and ate them as lettuce wraps. But everything was delish!! I spoke to many caterers and his level of professionalism and follow up was what truly drew me to his as I knew he could be trusted and cared for this event to be a success as much my sisters and i did. Everyone was so pleased and in awe of the service. As soon as an item was sent out - the napkins were whisked away. My sisters and I were able to enjoy my mother's party due to the prompt attention and efficiency of Adolfo's staff. I would love to hire Adolfo again for all my parties. It's well worth it and I'm so fortunate that I was able to find his services. Thank you for his team for making it so special. My mom was blown away- much success to you!! Thumbtack community - please hire them! You will not be disappointed.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

Chef Aless recently catered a high-school graduation party at our home in northern NJ. We had about 50 friends and family at the event and it was absolutely perfect! Chef Aless took my very basic idea for the event and developed it into a creative and delicious-sounding menu. She also came up with a great cocktail (Pimms & Elderflower) to complement to meal! Chef Aless took care of everything – she came early, set up, prepared the meal, served it and cleaned up afterwards. My family and I were totally free to enjoy ourselves, our guests, and the wonderful food Chef Aless prepared. All my guests commented on how excellent the food was and how beautifully it was presented. We wanted this party to be a very special event and Chef Aless ensured it was! Thanks, Aless!

Literally everything about working with SGS was perfect. They were on time and very pleasant to work with. The communication leading up to the dinner was easy and clear. But, most of all, the food was outstanding. I wish we had taken photos, but we ate outside, and couldn't really get photos of the beautiful and delicious dishes. Highly highly recommend!!

As someone who is obsessed with food, I know good from mediocre, and mediocre from just plain bad. I am also someone has ZERO capacity to cook for more than, like, 1-2 people at a time…tops 4….but I happen to have a big extended family and group of friends that LOVES to entertain and BE entertained. So, on one hand it’s great because it gives me LOTS of excuses to eat wonderful food to my heart’s content (yay cheat days!); on the other hand, I have panic attacks just THINKING about preparing for one of these parties in terms of planning menus, figuring out what and how much stuff to make, shopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning, etc My heart is actually starting to race right now just WRITING about it!!! However, about 7 years ago, I found my secret weapon. I was at an event my old job was hosting, and the food was AMAZING and so creative and delicious. The theme was gourmet comfort food, and I’ll never forget it because I LOVE comfort food, and the dishes they served at the event were such cool, delicious, creative versions of some of my favorites. I was in the restroom at some point fixing my make-up, and a Chef Alana happened to be at the sink as well. We just started chatting and I liked her instantly. She has such a great energy that you will notice right away when you meet her (and you SHOULD meet her!) As it happened, I was in the beginning stages of planning a holiday party with my sister, and we were tying to decide what to do about food. When I mentioned this to Chef Alana, she immediately threw like 3 great potential ideas at me!!! We exchanged info and I contacted her the next day. We talked about the details of the party, the types of guests they would be there, particular tastes, requirements, special dietary needs of some of the guests, etc. and she said she'd whip up a proposal and get back to me. Two days later she sent me an EPIC menu, layout of how she and her staff would work, breakdown of her price and some great tips as well! I hired her the second I was finished reading....and the rest is history. Chef Alana and her staff have done every single event I have ever needed catered, since then, as well as many for people I have referred her to. On a totally opposite note from being an obsessed foodie and big entertainer/entertainee, I happen to also be a former figure competitor (a category in the bodybuilding world). Now, while I don’t seek out the healthiest dishes when planning a party or family gathering, Chef Alana’s food almost always can be considered “healthy” in that she only uses the freshest ingredients and every single element of every dish is homemade. She skimps on NOTHING in terms of quality, freshness and authenticity. But I digress. The real point I was about to make is that for the two years I was competing, I hired Chef Alana to do all of my meal prepping and delivery. We thoroughly discussed my needs and preferences — which were VERY picky and obnoxious — and she NAILED it every single week. The amount of time and frustration she saved me during that already-stressful time was PRICELESS. I refer all of my friends and family to Chef Alana and her Most Wanted Chef staff any chance I get. She is that good. I actually hate making recommendations to people on services and products, etc. in case things don’t go well and then I’d feel responsible. In all honesty, though, I NEVER hesitate to recommend Chef Alana/Most Wanted Chef, and I will continue to tout her services and UTILIZE her services every chance I get. Do yourself a favor if you have ANY need for a caterer or a private chef - reach out to Chef Alana, be prepared to be blown away, and see why she really is the Most Wanted Chef.

Peter and his team were absolutely amazing. Not only was he great at communicating with me prior to the event, but he also offered many delicious options for the menu to ensure there would be something for everyone at my party. The team was on time and very respectful of the staff and the space, putting together a lovely set-up with flowers (!) that made the event feel that much more special. The food and drinks were delicious. My personal favorite were the pulled pork sliders and mojitos, but everyone raved about how delicious all of our appetizers were. Peter even sent a special plate over to me (the host) to ensure I'd have a chance both to eat and sample his delicious menu. I cannot say enough about the friendliness of him and his staff throughout the night. They were just so thoughtful and professional. I would (and will!) absolutely hire Peter and Creative Table Catering again in the future. My friends were also very impressed by him and the value of the services he offered at my event. In a city with innumerable options for caterers, I would highly recommend Peter for any event you have. He made my special night a celebration to remember.

It was a catered birthday party at a hall and unfortunately it was a snowy evening but the food was still delivered on time. I was impressed from the very beginning, from the large restaurant sized napkins to the upscale knives and forks which are the same size as your dinner (as opposed to lunch) utensils. I cannot find enough superlatives to describe the food. For appetizers we had sauteed shrimp and cocktail meatballs. The shrimp were simply wonderful, and the meatballs were beefy and substantive, they were not mushy with filler as I have tasted from other caterers. (I am not normally a big meatball fan [personal preference] but I loved these.)The entrees were fried chicken cutlets - OMG- unbelievably flavorful and perfectly seasoned, and pepper steak - tender, tasty and with a gravy that you wanted to get the last drop. One side was Spanish Rice, every grain was separate and distinct and the texture was perfect. The other side was baked macaroni and cheese - outstanding! Again, the texture was perfect and it was cheesy throughout. This was REAL baked macaroni and cheese as opposed to the saucy versions which make me think of the stove-top varieties. This reminded me of my mother's and grandmothers macaroni and cheese and they were the best. T & C Catering's serving allotments are very, very generous. My guests feasted on this food and gave rave reviews. I had looked at other caterers and I was not happy with their limited selections so I turned to the internet and stumbled upon Thumbtack, and from them I learned of T & C, a real gem of a find. My event was two counties away so don't be afraid if its not "local." T & C helped give me the 60th birthday party that I had always envisioned. I would use T & C again, in a heartbeat. And their pricing is excellent - What's not to love.

Our experience with Harvest Specialty Catering and Jason was all that I could ask for. We chose this company for our daughter's barn wedding. Initially, Jason was willing to work with us for a limited portion of our event, something many caterers are NOT willing to do. After time (and a taste testing!) we opted to use him for all but dessert (we had a friend doing the cake.) We so appreciated his flexibility and willingness to work with us. He accommodated us and our changing needs at all points of our journey, even in the midst of his own challenges with equipment issues. We never knew about his difficulties until later, and not from Jason but the venue staff, as he and his crew pulled off a wonderful dinner. Our wedding guests were very complimentary of the food. On every level, we were thrilled with our choice. I would highly recommend this company for your event, whatever it may be.

Doris catered my small wedding dinner. Doris and her daughter were fantastic! They arrived exactly on time and had delicious appetizers ready for us shortly thereafter while we all got ready. We were able to leave to go get married on the beach and we left with confidence that we would have a great meal upon our return. Doris had our first course of refreshing lemon sorbet on the table within minutes of our arrival. The rest of meal as well as their outstanding service and attention that they paid to us and our guests exceeded our expectation. All in all we had a great experience using Doris and wouldn't hesitate to use her again or recommend her to others. Planning was also super easy as we were able to plan a menu through a series of email exchanges and brief phone conversations

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
