Berry was very accommodating, and made sure that he took care of his client although it could mean working till 11:30pm or later. He's very fast yet thorough with his work. He was able to help me although he had a full schedule & had to get ready for his vacation, the next day. I'm very happy with how he took care of my kitchen sink as well as bathroom faucet. I'm very happy that I found him through Thumbtack & I'll hire him for future home improvement work. Thank you Berry!!!

We bought a new TV and wanted to mount it on the wall in our apartment. Realized shortly after moving in that the wall was cement, and needed some extra help (didn't have the tools to drill through the cement and didn't want to fuss buying new stuff). After researching and fielding different offers, we eventually hired Lopez Home Improvement LLC. Thought this would be an easy job -- it wasn't. I've drilled through cement before, but this stuff was strong. Real strong. Overall, Walter came in prepared and professional. He worked non-stop and completed the job in an efficient manner. All I can say is I appreciate his patience throughout the time he was here -- it wasn't an easy job to say the least. But above all else, we couldn't be happier with the result. Did I mention he charged us an extremely favorable rate to complete this job? I would easily recommend. Worth every penny.

In the process of selling our home and needed to replace the water heater and a corroded pipe. Ed completed the job as promised and went beyond the scope of the job by replacing a rusted vent that we did not notice before. Overall we are completely satisfied and would recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing done. Thanks Ed!

Greivin constucted a custom garden box that had a bit of complexity because it had to hide an unsightly platform on my patio. It was excellent work and as importantly he was consistently communicating with me and my wife and very good at setting expectations and following through as promised.

Giovanny did a great job for my basement pointing project. I just moved into a house that was recently renovated but originally built in 1892. The previous owners heavily prioritized cosmetic changes but did not do any foundation/structural work work. The brick foundation was quite crumbly and some bricks were missing. Giovanny estimated that pointing hadn't been done for probably 15 years. There was a layer of paint over the bricks as well so Giovanny had to scrape the paint in order to do the pointing. I also needed the base of my front steps (underneath the structure) to be filled in and smoothed over and for him to fix a pretty big crack where the outside concrete stairs meet the house. Giovanny was able to beat a quote from another thumbtack pro and gave me a very reasonable price. Giovanny was punctual, professional, finished the job in two days. The only area for improvement worth noting is clean up. I did have to request that Giovanny clean up the mess on the basement floor before he left. He did the best he could without any cleaning supplies. He didn't bring any and I just moved in so everything was in boxes. But in spite of this, he still deserves the full 5 stars as his work is high quality for a fair price. I will be hiring Giovanny again for any masonry needs in the future.

We could not be MORE pleased with the work that Jorge and his crew did for our house. They created a beautiful stone patio and walkway that perfectly reflected our vision. They asked us to trust them and boy did it pay off. The work is top notch and they were so easy to work with with all of our middle of the project changes. They created a great project price that fit our budget needs and worked with us to modify it when necessary to accomplish our expanded demands. Jorge and his crew showed up on time every day - worked tremendously hard every day until the project was complete. I cannot recommend them enough.

I hired James to do a kitchen renovation for me at my home, and it was a great decision. From beginning to end the service and professionalism was top notch. The quality of work provided was excellent as well. James and his crew also did work for my parents, redoing their bathroom which also yielded the same results. Excellent work and service. I would highly recommend Global Housing Contractors to anyone looking to do home improvements.

It's been a pleasure to work with Home Geeks. Our renovation hasn't been finished (will update when the job is done) but so far, Vincent and Richard have been professional, responsive and patient. As an architect, I have worked with a lot of contractors, and so far they have been great. They have the experience and knowledge to give us good recommendations and they care about the client saving money by reducing the scope of unnecessary work. Their fee is reasonable also. Thank you, guys!

I highly recommend global hill construction company Mr. Shoodi performed an outstanding job and I am thrilled with the final results! My floors presented a challenge as they were badly damaged with staining and paint the full home In only 4 days shoodi transformed my flooring to looking brand new once again and pants results was very good. His technique provided me with many pros: reasonably priced, no need to move out of my home as his products are non-toxic ( a plus if you have pets or children ), the convenience of no sand or dust clean-up. Shoodi and his co-worker naveed were at all times polite, professional, and always on time as scheduled. They also meticulously moved all of my furniture back in place once the job was completed. An added bonus is their office manager ahmad who was a pleasure to deal with. Ahmad diligently took care of all appointment details including my building's insurance requirements, etc. A major plus for the consumer! New York, NY. Shoodi was a true professional.

I am absolutely ecstatic that Avi was the one to add a patio to our boring, bland, sloped bakcyard. His talent truly brought life to my backyard! He had wonderful suggestions, great communication and was extremely attentive to our taste to ensure things came out exactly how we wanted. We did not plan to do another project until next year but we were so pleased with his work that we're having him start constructing a path at the front of our home. His touch IS just that amazing. Thank you so much for your hard work and professionalism! It's been such a pleasure. Here are some before and after photo's of our yard.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
