Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Above the Rest is just that, above the rest. The paint job was fantastic. I was not present during the painting, but my son was very impressed with the painters and how they took care of the house as if it was their own. I really appreciate this company painting my house and doing such a good job. Tamara worked with me closely to ensure my paint choices were what I really wanted. She was very amenable and I really like that. Will refer others to this company and use again if I need more painting done. A++++

I ended up paying for the entire job prior to it be completed. There were multiple times when scheduled times to work had to be rescheduled resulting in the job not being completed, having to hire someone else to finiah the job. I spent time cleaning up paint that had been dropped on the tile and on the light fixtures in the bathrooms. When painting the rooms, not all of the blinds were taken down, as the team painted around them, and also painted around the outlet covers instead of taking them off prior to painting.

They did a _fantastic_ job on our house and went above and beyond to make sure it looked beautiful! They power-washed the whole house and caulked all necessary areas before they even started painting. They also replaced a piece of rotting fascia. Then they primed and painted all of the fascia and soffits on our whole house and all of the trim on an exterior wood tuff-shed in our back yard. Extremely professionally done and all of the workers were very nice and polite. Will definitely only use them for painting from here on out! You will not be disappointed with this business. Very skilled, knowledgeable, and hard workers.

I highly recommend Busby Finishes. We had a great experience with Richard and his team. They were prompt, polite, and fairly priced for their services. We needed several cabinets painted to match others we had painted years ago. The cabinets turned out great! They were clean and quiet throughout the process which was especially important to us since we work from home. I wish we new about Richard, Cari, and their team back when we had our other cabinets painted. We will definitely tell our friends to use Busby Finishes.

Charles and his team did an outstanding job, used quality paint, and did not skip corners. The job was even finished ahead of time! Charles came to look at my house and took detail notes, so we had a clear understanding of what would be done, so there were no surprises. We love the job they did and would hire him again. I highly recommend Jay’s painting

Charles Romero owner operator for Jays painting first of all was impressive during his estimate visit. Going through the areas we planned to get painted we were having the exterior eves painted which had not been painted in over 20 years Most impressive was his call back and again actually asking for the business. He showed up did his work and during the walk through we found a few areas which needed to be touched up he showed up the following day took care of those areas and fixed one rather large area that was weather damaged in a covered patio area and was not included in his estimate had some else who was had experience in doing this type of work fixed at no charge and painted This young guy’s work is outstanding reasonable not to mention his wife who waited for him while he finished his first days work asked if she could go though final walk through what a team Jays Painting’s again his work his outstanding. Thank you Charles we’re giving you a 5+ stars rating

I emailed him with details about the bathroom we wanted painted, and he gave us a quote, which he confirmed after meeting with my husband and seeing the room. I told him what color paint I wanted (light grey), but I neglected to tell my husband, who was there for the job; he painted it an off-white instead of the light grey I wanted. The job was done on a Friday-he told my husband he would be back on Monday to touch up. That was over two weeks ago, and we haven't heard from him since. My husband now has to do the touch up and the clean up.

Jay's Painting and his guys overall did a great job on the cabinets. The places look modern and we'll see how the work holds up to time. He was professional about his business, sanded down the cabinets, used quality paint, and put on handles. The price came in lower than competitors. Our only issue was punctuality on the daily, whether it was materials, schedule, workers, etc. If it weren't for our current remote work situation, we wouldn't have been able to meet the guys whenever they did show up. They did a decent job of keeping floors and all other areas not receiving paint fairly clean. Overall we were able to be flexible and they pushed through and got the work done. Would say 4.5/5 and would recommend.

They were awesome, fast, and very professional. They even went and bought a special type of roller to make the paint come out smoother because they weren’t satisfied with the result. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

We hired Jay to paint the whole interior of our 3600 sq. ft. house. Jay is a good painter, but his helper didn't do nearly as well. But there are several reasons for giving this company a poor rating. Punctuality and communication were a major problem. The original time estimate was 4 days. But Jay and helper never arrived in mornings until 9 or 9:30 am (sometimes later) and quite often left by 2:30-3:00. So the job took much longer (12 weekdays to completion). What was really aggravating was modifying our schedule to be home when they arrived, only to have them arrive 1-3 hours later than promised. On at least two days, they never showed up at all after texting the evening before they would be there "early" the next morning. Time after time, I found myself texting Jay to try to find out what the "new plan" was. One morning, after Jay never showed, but his helper was working, his helper was also aggravated that Jay wasn't there. Jay had told us that his father was ill and needed Jay. But the helper told us that Jay was out shopping for a new truck. Sure enough, when Jay finally showed up at the end of the day, he came in a new truck. After that, I knew not to trust anything Jay said. Cleanup was a constant problem. They did not consistently put down drop clothes and we had to clean ceiling paint splatter off of furniture, and found many places where blobs of ceiling or wall paint were in our carpet on on our tile. They consistently left energy drink cans all over the house, and we had to clean water rings left by the cans when set on our furniture or cherry wood window thresholds. There were many cigarette butts left for us to pick up outside the house. They cleaned brushes in our bathroom sink, and dumped paint from a 5 gallon cleanup bucket on our lawn. They spilled white paint on our cement back porch and didn't clean it up. When they said the job was complete, and before doing a walk-thru together, Jay pressured me to give him complete payment, promising he would be back in the morning to finish a utility room and do touch-up. Like a dummy I trusted him and gave him the payment. Of course he didn't show the next day! It took an additional week of pleading for him to come back and finish. (Part of this time, he said he was staying at the hospital with his Dad. But he wasn't communicating very well with me about what was happening. I asked him several times if one of his employees could come and finish up.) I finally got him to come back by offering him a $200 bonus. Even then, the promised arrival time was missed. We had a two-page "punch list" of items to complete. At first he said we were being too picky, but after he started walking through rooms with me, he agreed that most of the items on the list accurately showed something that needed to be fixed. (For examples, no cut-in around some doorknobs, back edges of doors not painted, back of door not painted at all, etc., etc.) Other problems included his helper not knowing how to properly remove 5 sets of bi-fold closet doors. He removed more hardware than required and then misplaced/lost hardware, so I had to chase around to multiple hardware stores, to find replacement hardware, and had to reinstall some of the doors myself. We had Jay paint the front of doors & drawers of our built-in linen storage in our main hallway. Jay removed all the old cupboard door pulls and drawer pulls and he said he would put the new ones (that we supplied him) on afte r the paint dried. After Jay didn't show up for a week I put all the new hardware on myself - just to get it done. When Jay was out of paint for final touch-up, I spent $100 extra going and buying paint. (This cost should have been Jay's but by this time, I didn't want any more excuses for Jay not to finish, so I bought the paint and provided it to him. (There had been times earlier that Jay would say he was going to the paint store for paint before lunch, and never come back that day. I did not want that to happen again.)) I spent approximately 4 hours doing touch-ups myself after Jay was finally gone. This whole experience was a nightmare that I hope I never have to repeat. What is a shame is that when Jay is on the job and doing actual painting himself, he is a talented painter. But his poor punctuality, and not showing up when he said he would, coupled with a helper who is not a good painter, make his business less-than-professional.

We hired B&C to paint the interior of our home which included very high ceilings and lots of detail work. We are so thrilled with the entire experience. Brian and his partner did an amazing job from start to finish. The attention to detail was incredible. They were a delight to have in our home and we will definitely use them again for any painting or any handyman work we may need. These guys can do it all. They did a fantastic job, were meticulous in their cleanup, and very trustworthy and friendly. They work great as a team and were very fast and efficient. A+
