"My piano lessons began on December 16, 2016 when I was 58 years old. I had never played a musical instrument in my life and took a leap of faith in this new endeavor. I am completely satisfied with my learning experience. In fact, I feel so fortunate to have met Joyce Hamilton. I was looking for a professional piano teacher who was educated and polished, not simply taking on a hobby. I am pleased with Joyce because she has high standards for me no matter what. I never feel intimidated by her and I always feel comfortable being with her. What I find most wonderful about my piano lessons is that I am not rushed; Joyce is not only about goal setting but also about the progress in the moment. This aspect is far more important to me at this time in my life. Joyce has students of all ages; in fact, my 14 year-old granddaughter just began taking piano lessons from her. One can see crayons and rewards in her studio for the little ones and when I am taking a lesson I record her playing a piece on my smartphone so I may hear the rhythm and see her fingerings during the week when I practice. The most important teaching characteristic that I value from Joyce is her integrity. I want a teacher that is honest with me about my playing. I want to hear the truth about all aspects of my piano playing...positive and negative. Yet she is always kind and supportive when I miss the mark. The reason that I am still learning to play the piano a year later is because of my teacher...because of Joyce. Bernadette"

"I have been teaching piano for over 24 years and have excellent references. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from Florida State University. Students ages 5 and up are welcome in my home-based music studio located near the intersection of Louisiana and Alameda in the the northeast heights of Albuquerque. Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay and listen to our lesson. Please feel free to call me 730-8148 with any questions you may have about starting piano. Lessons are $30 for a half hour or $60 an hour and must be paid on a monthly basis. Typically, students ages 5-11 take a 30 minute lesson and those age 12 and older take an hour long lesson each week. My favorite piano method books are the Faber and Faber books. They cover a lot of groundwork in a well thought-out, logical manner. They flow easily from Primer level to level 5 which is more of an intermediate playing level. I also like to incorporate listening, music theory and proper piano technique with each lesson. Students are encouraged but not required to participate in an annual piano recital given in late spring before APS is out for the summer. I have also prepared many students for the National Piano Guild Auditions which is another performance / adjudication opportunity if your student would enjoy that experience. I offer one free introductory lesson to each new student so that we can meet each other, assess how well we fit and to get a better idea what your student knows and is comfortable with musically. I look forward to answering your questions and beginning a new musical relationship with you and your student!"
