"I have been playing bass guitar by myself for 2 years now without any formal instruction. I could read bass tablature and watch YouTube on how to play things but I never knew what I was playing and why. Anyone can watch someone telling you what to play and where to put your fingers. That’s all I knew, but I had a good base to start off with so I can’t write a review from a beginner’s point of view. What I can write is a review of someone who wanted to go deeper into music theory and to get an understanding of what and why I was playing because I was so interested in my instrument and wanted to take it to the next level. I did what anyone else would do and search for a music teacher, simple as that. I filled out all the stuff on Thumbtack and submitted it. The first reply I got was from Tommy, and then a few more reply’s for others. After talking to them all, one thing that hooked me into wanting to know more about Tommy as a teacher was that he asked me “What is it you exactly want to learn?”, versus telling me what direction he will or might steer me in. He took the time, all of his time, on the phone, to listen to me and answer every question I had. He was upfront about his introductory price and the price structure there afterwards. Nothing was sketchy or “hidden” about his fees. Actually, what he charges for an hour is what probably 90% of others charge for a half hour. After that I chose him as my teacher and started lessons. This was about 2 months ago. Every 1 hour session with Tommy is a total lesson on what you want to learn as a student, not something just pushed on you or time wasted talking. He takes his time and patience as an instructor, with me, to cover the theory and what’s and whys of what you are playing or want to play. This makes his lessons so enjoyable, and it is the basis of branching off into learning new things that directly relate to my style of music and direction I want to go in. After the lesson Tommy takes his own personal time to do things on his computer relating to the lesson and sends the newly created material to you for your computer, so as to practice at home. I just cannot see a music store type of teacher doing this additional, above and beyond work. Music lessons are a 2 way street when you’re not a grade school kid. As a student I am there to eagerly learn my instrument, I am spending my hard earned money and I truly appreciate a teacher who sees this and feeds off of my energy to learn. In the day and age of tons of reading material and videos online, there is one thing that the online, self help type of instructions can’t do, and that is engage in a conversation as to what I may be doing wrong, how to do something better, how to learn something new or answer all your questions. This is where a real music instructor comes in and I am happy to say Tommy’s one on one lessons are a perfect fit for this missing part."
