Scott is a true master of his craft. I hired him to do some simple wood work and ended up awarding him the entire build out of my new restaurant after witnessing his skill firsthand. He was always attentive and willing to go above and beyond anything requested of him. I will surely use him again for any future work needed. Highly recommended with a the knowledge and experience needed for a successful project. Thanks Scott, couldn't have done it without you.

Mike replaced some laminate flooring in our dining room that had been damaged and ripped out. He laced it into the existing wood that we were able to save in the living room and did a wonderful job! We even ran into a little trouble with some of the pieces not fitting correctly but he made it work! He did it quickly and he did it beautifully! I highly recommend him!

It was a pretty extensive staining woodworking job. 3 large wooden doors with window lights on each side needed to be sanded to the bare wood, re-stained, and sealed. Juan is definitely an experienced pro. About a half dozen other painters I called do not even 'do staining of doors'. The price was extremely fair for the amount of work and for the truly fantastic results. Thanks so much!

Gil removed old shelving in my garage and built new shelving. The new shelving came out good; except next time I would use the actual wood lumber instead of the white finished pressed material. It's just my personal preference. Overall, the shelving looked good. I would use Gil again for other house projects in the future.

As an Interior Designer I needed to have a carpenter put up barn doors, hired James and he did such an excellent job! I am now using him to put up refurbished barn wood up, building an wine cellar entrance and shelving out the home. James is a perfectionist and master carpenter, I really enjoy his creativity and his pinnacle work. So glad I met him and will use him on all my projects for sure. Rudy and his crew did an excellent job painting! They showed up on time and were very professional. I had my entire 3800 square foot house painted top to bottom interior and exterior. They did a custom, quality job. We were looking for a good company to work with because we wanted 6 different colors with pin stripes, baseboards, crown moulding and doors painted. Rudy was confident from the beginning that his crew could do a good job and he was right! They also stained my cabinets and refinished and stained the wood railing on the stairs. It's like a new house! I definitely recommend 360 Home Care!

For new homeowners needing quite a bit of work done on our house, we did not know where to start! From my first initial inquiry on Thumbtack, down to the last detail on our house, we had awesome service from M&R Services. Any questions we had, any hiccups &/or additional house work that was found along the way that we did not realize was needed… you name it - was taken care of by M&R Services. Robert is definitely a people person and so is his team, they were a delight to work with. Our house needed completely painted on the inside, tile in upstairs bathrooms & laundry, new baseboards throughout entire house, repair to the ceiling in the kitchen from upstairs water damage, and new toilets installed. Before meeting Robert, we had already had our floors scheduled with Home Depot for new wood laminate throughout living room, stairs, and loft, and carpet in the bedrooms. We ended up cancelling with Home Depot (what a rip off) and were given a much better option from M&R that was within our budget, and had them complete that all, too! Robert even helped us out and got our front yard landscaping taken care of, as it was very over grown when we bought the house, just out of the goodness of his heart. From where the house started, to where it is at now… wow, it is like night and day. We absolutely LOVE it!!! Honestly, that is probably an understatement! I can’t wait to get home every day and look at it. M&R Services is definitely looking out for people, they do good work, and are not trying to make a quick buck by charging you something outrageous. We had a really good experience with them and hope that you do, too!

Dave was a pleasure to work with. He was friendly and knowledgable. The end result was absolutely beautiful. I had wood look tile in a herringbone pattern installed and he took the time to make sure everything was lined up and amazing. I couldn't be happier. I will recommend him to anyone who asks about this sort of work and I will be calling him for any future projects that he can help with.

I hired Murat and his team to install solid hardwood (more difficult to install than engineered wood but longer-lasting) for the entire second floor-over 1600 sq ft. The first contractor I had hired botched the first room and wasted a LOT of wood because they didn't know what they were doing. But his team came in, fixed the botched room, and from there worked quickly and cleanly to install the rest of the floor. Because the first contractor damaged so much wood, they didn't have enough to finish the stairs. They were very patient and understanding while I waited for another special order of wood to arrive in order to finish the job. Make sure you ask for James. He was the main man on the job and he went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with all work-you should see how gorgeous my stairs are now! He's a true craftsman. Thank you thank you thank you. And Murat, I've already recommended you to two other people because I know you're the best in town. Don't try to go cheap, people. Learn by my mistake. Murat is well worth the investment.

Frazier Mountain Hardwood installs all of my hard wood jobs. I have never worked with a more professional person. All jobs are installed perfectly, clean, and on time, if not early. Howard is a problem solver, and that means a lot to an Interior Designer. I give him 10 stars.

Rus was terrific! He installed 4 ceiling fans, 2 light fixtures and new wood blinds in an investment property. He's VERY polite, mature and dependable. I needed a new handyman because my previous one moved out of area. Rus was a good find. I will be using him again for other upcoming projects, including wood floor installations.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
