My son said that this week’s Trigonometry lesson with his tutor was very good. He learned a lot of concepts that weren't taught in his class at school.

Harry is a great teacher. I began taking ukulele lessons with him a couple of months ago and I am surprised by my own progress. He is patient and offers several different approaches to learning the instrument. I look forward to my weekly lesson with him. I have never played an instrument before, and Harry has been encouraging since the first moment. It is clear that he is passionate about music and teaching others the joy of playing!

Mr. deSeve is an educator of the highest order. The kind of teacher I would wish my family and friends to have. Caring, passionate about teaching, and an unparalled ability to determine your plan for study by gently testing you to ascertain your strengths and weaknesses. This is a teacher, student partnership and I can feel the genuine feelings this tutor has for his students to excel. I feel more than encouraged about my learning experience. If we had more educators in our school system, such as Mr. deSeve, we would have no doubt that the next generation will excel and carry their passions forward.

I have been taught and tutored by Ted in the Spanish language. Ted has native fluency in Spanish and possesses a solid understanding of the Spanish language. Having been a classroom teacher himself, Ted is able to structure full-scale language courses that would could take his students from basic through fluency. As a tutor, Ted is attentive and is quick to differentiate his instruction to his students' needs. Ted is also incredibly flexible and is able to work with his students to build a schedule that supports sustained learning. As a classroom teacher myself who continually builds curriculum for students of diverse levels, I would strongly recommend Ted as an incredibly skilled teacher and tutor.

Our son is currently being tutored in Algebra II/Trig by Corey. In the last 2 months we've seen our son gain a letter grade, as well as self confidence in what used to be his worst subject. We are so pleased with his progress and my son loves Corey's laid-back style.

As a mining engineer I'm teaching Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics since 1996 and I may teach all these articles in English, Italian or Turkish. My target audience is high school and college students but of course it won't be a problem if there are younger students; I'm just much more experienced with teenager guys and gals. I enjoy teaching, showing the right method and watching my student's success. It's not a problem if my student doesn't have any idea about the article we are working on or doesn't understand even if I explained it a couple of times. This profession requires patience and empathy and my 20 years of experience has proven me that I do have both of them :)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
