Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Having multiple personal trainers in the past, Ergi is by far the best. Ergi is professional, punctual, dedicated, and motivating. I have been training with him for six months and in that time he has helped me achieve my weight gain and muscle mass goals. Besides his great workout regiments he also gives you a nutrition guide based on your body goals. My body has significantly improved and is at its best it's ever been - thanks to him. He is the type of personal trainer that you don't want to let down and makes you stay on track. I look forward to continue training with him. Thank you, Ergi!!

Jason has been a Godsend. I met Jason at a time in my life when even my physician was suggesting bariatric weight loss surgery. It seemed so extreme. When I began training with Jason, I lost 20 lbs in the first 10 sessions, 30 lbs in 30 days! No diet pills, no drugs, no starvation, no risk to my health or to my knee injury. I listen to Jason and I follow what he tells me to do. Jason is there with you every step of the way; he is professional, motivating, funny and highly knowledgeable. He is, by far and without exception, the best personal trainer to have. To date, I have lost over 90 lbs! He changed my life! You will never regret your decision to hire Jason Senior as your personal trainer. I highly recommend him. Talia W.

You haven't had a personal trainer until you start working with Bobby! Each workout is tailored to you, so you can achieve exactly what you have discussed. Our sessions are always hard work but always with a element of excitement. My overall strength and fitness improved so much in a short space of time that I was able to perform exercises I would never have attempted on my own. He works with the whole person mentally, emotionally and physically. One of my best results from working with Bobby is Self Belief! The faith Bobby had in me that I can literally transform my body, gave me the self belief that I have NO limitations as I progress in my fitness journey with him. If you need a personal trainer you desperately need Bobby in your life!

Very good!!! Jason is an incredible personal trainer. Not only will he whip you into shape, but he keeps it interesting everytime you work out with him. He is great about not repeating the same workouts every week. He also does a great job of explaining why he has you do certain exercises. Jason is very conscientious of you and what's going on with your body and will adjust a workout accordingly Overall, I very highly recommend him!

CT Nick is a Godsend! He’s far more than a fitness trainer. CT Nick is a total fitness and wellness coach. I work in a service-oriented industry where professionalism and consistency is key for the success of the company. CT Nick exemplifies professionalism! He’s intelligent, articulate, educated in the field of fitness, nutrition and overall wellness. He’s also very punctual. He communicates beyond the hours of my workout schedule. He makes continual diet recommendations via text messages along with encouraging statements aimed at keeping me focused on my fitness goals. Evidence of his skill as a knowledgeable and goal oriented trainer is in the fact that I lost 10 pounds in one month. My weight loss has even been a topic of conversation on my job and with friends that attend my church. These amazing results did of course require a very strong commitment on my part. This is a real trainer/client relationship, which is exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend CT Nick’s fitness services. He will be my personal fitness coach on a long-term basis.

Most people who read reviews regarding personal trainers want to know whether or not this person will help them achieve their goals. I can say confidently that training with Jason will result in noticeable improvements in a short period of time. I've been working with him steadily for 4 months; I've lost 38lb, gone down 2 pants sizes and 3 shirt sizes. He's provided the structure, guidance, nutritional and fitness feedback and encouragement I've needed to achieve weight loss, as well as non-scale victories. No two workouts are the same, which is pretty creative considering we meet 3 times a week. Sessions are divided evenly between high intensity interval training and cardio. We've also begun to incorporate more significant strength training with free weights. I believe this combination has helped prevent my body from becoming comfortable and plateauing. He's willing to meet me where it's convenient to workout, and he's flexible and adjusts to my scheduling. We've trained outdoors and at the gym; believe me that no 2 workouts are the same. He comes to each session with a professional and engaging attitude, ready to focus the entire session on achieving your goal. He will keep you on point and accountable, as far as both your fitness and nutritional habits are concerned. This can be helpful for beginners and seasoned athletes alike, as nutritional habits are especially important to any fitness goals. I can say that he's helped me challenge myself and overcome physical and emotional barriers that had prevented my success in the past. He will work with you at whatever size or fitness level you're currently at and get you where you want to be. Likewise, his price is very fair and reasonable. If you want someone who's patient, equally committed to your success, willing to meet you literally and emotionally where you're at, and approaches fitness with an encouraging and positive attitude, Jason is the trainer for you. You'll be glad you've chosen him to be part of your fitness journey.

If feel that she really cares about me and my health. always asking me what I ate because she knows that it's my down fall. she gave me a menu for a week of meals. she has a great app. She comes to mu house and we do all kinds of different exercises. I really like her a lot. My other personal trainer did nothing for me. same exercises all the time - she is on another level. She is worth every dollar that i spend. I signed up for 13 sessions but know that i will do another 13 when these are finished.
