This is really more of a 4.5-star review :) We're first-time homeowners and hired Tom for a kitchen renovation and a few other small projects. We are really pleased with the results! Tom worked as quickly as possible and communicated well with us throughout the process over text and phone. In moments of frustration and delay (to be expected when coordinating with the town on permits and with subcontractors), Tom was even-keeled and worked with us to find fair solutions. His workmanship was good and he was quick to fix any/all small issues that we asked about. Tom was a reliable, personable, and his price was fair. We wouldn't hesitate to hire him again for another project.

Eric did a great job of installing closets in a guest room, replacing rotted floor joists and flooring and insulating my pantry and fixing a light fixture that hasn't worked in years. He was extremely neat and clean and very professional. I recently called him for another project he was right there for me. Trusted and professional contractors are worth their weight in gold and Eric is at the top of the list.

Job done well. Originally said would only be 1 day, start at 8AM. Did not start until 11AM so took 2 days. Serious issues with subcontractor for interior work have been addressed. All in all we are satisfied and would call for estimates on future work.

Adam has been amazing to work with. Any ideas that I've had, he's made come to life. He's gotten our addition done quickly and precisely. We just signed on Dayson's Home Improvement to begin another addition on our home and so far, it's been great again. It's been really comforting to work with a contractor who listened to our needs and come in with his own ideas to make our projects really work for our family. Adam has always been prompt and honest and has always completed his scope on time. He also works with great subcontractors who have also gotten their end of the job done. All in all, I'd highly recommend him.

Peta and Angelika worked over the past year on a residential project for me at my home on Fifth Avenue in New York City in which they led the design team and project management for a complex apartment remodeling. They worked very effectively together with the general contractor and various subcontractors. They did an excellent job with all aspects of the renovation, including the design work at the onset. They coordinated the work of various contractors and artisans, some of whom were not very cooperative. In fact, without Angelika and Peta, the project would never have been completed. They brought the project to conclusion in a timely manner. They interacted very effectively with all of the subs and ensured that they got the job done on budget and on a reasonable schedule. Perhaps most importantly, they brought their creative skills to the project and made the renovation beautiful. Harvey B.

Julie joined "Our Family" approximately 7 years ago as we were ready to embark on adding a 5 story wing to an existing house. She presented beautiful selections for us to choose from for the various spaces of our home. Her selection of fabrics, furniture and finishes were reflective of our style. Although, this project was a daunting task, Julie helped us achieve it in an appreciated time frame and with complete satisfaction. Her sense of detail created special areas of interest in our home. As we continue to evolve with our taste, we call Julie back on an item by item basis and plan to for years to come. I also have to state that the quality of her subcontractors are the best in the business.

Using Carlos for five years for interior and exterior home improvements. He has refreshed our 100-year-old house with excellent carpentry, painting, and refinishing. He is prompt and comes in within estimate, leaving any work site impeccably clean. His subcontractors for floors, etc., have been as good. Definitely worth using on any home. (Hope he doesn't get so busy we have to wait a while to use him next time.)

I rarely leave reviews for contractor's but in this case, it was necessary. After obtaining several quotes,Tim's pricing was competitive but reasonable. Tim and his crew arrived promptly at 9:00 AM and completed the job by 7:00 PM, just like Tim predicted. His craftmenship was outstanding, a work of art, and being the neat freak that I am, Tim and crew were tidy throughout the entire processes. I would highly recommend him.

High Mount Construction completed a kitchen, living room and master suite addition to my home six years ago. They also renovated a playroom of mine five years ago. The work was completed on time and within the agreed perameters. The cost of the project was competitive with other bids. Krys was always punctual and replied promptly to any concerns. From framing to painting, we have been very pleased with the results and would highly recommend High Mount to anyone looking to do a home project big or small.

I would like to highly recommend the general contractor who handled my townhouse’s third remodeling and renovation project, Mr. Mario Bissessar, owner and principal of City Line Interiors, Inc. The job project went extremely smoothly and was completed in a highly professional, efficient manner; I am very pleased with both the process and the beautiful results. The project was multi-faceted, complicated -as any remodeling entails- including a lot of details, involving multiple building sectors such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, windows, tiling and paintings, metal work, having to respect landmark rules and blending with the existing structure. The crew led by Mario was very cohesive, punctual, talented, productive, flexible and friendly. His team is fluent in English (with a variety of charming Caribbean accents). Mario is very responsive, an excellent communicator and a great team leader. He was there every day, not only overseeing the work but very much hands-on, with precious skills, including carpentry. Mario also contributed great design ideas and judicious trouble-shooting solutions. Of course, I made several last minute changes or additions, which inflated the original budget but the corresponding charges were well itemized, justified and very reasonable. The payment schedule was without surprises and always well timed. It does not hurt that Mario is also an IT wizard…. All his subcontractors (electricity, plumbing, HVAC and metal work) were fantastic: they delivered diligently on the promised dates. It makes a big difference when subcontractors are well coordinated; they obviously knew and respected each other well, and were happy to work with Mario Bissessar.

Originally selected very large contractor with great examples of work and competitive bid only to be very disappointed. Let's just say legal action needed to stop work and we were gun shy selecting a new contractor but ultimately decide on Pro Home Builders. What a world of difference: much more personal attention, subcontractors that took pride in their work, helpful advice and suggestions from the owner, Victor, himself. Wealth of experience that he offers that is invaluable. He identified some structural issues (sloping/crooked support beam) from original builder and worked to rectify them quickly at fair price. Scope of work included replacing poorly installed and kinked HVAC flexpipe with hard conduits for better laminar flow, redoing hardwood floors properly, whole house repainting (so much better quality work), replacing trim, and remodeling bathroom. Don't be fooled by large companies (may promise you world but just subcontract you to lowest bidders or drag your project on forever) or the lowest bid. Pro Home Builders will give you fair competitive price, but more importantly great work that they take pride in (something clear to us after meeting many of the folks working on the house). You can't go wrong just meeting with Victor and getting his thoughts and advice on your project, chances are you'll find he's the right person to trust your home to.

Joe undertook a complete gutting, renovation, and expansion of our kitchen and pantry, plus construction of an addition that included a bathroom and a 10x20 dining area/family room/office, plus construction of a new deck. This was at our residence in Rutherford, NJ. It was a very complex project that involved many stages and coordination with a number of subcontractors in addition to work with a designer. We had some particular, unusual requests and when the kitchen was gutted there were some perplexing surprises. Through it all, Joe did an excellent job. He was very careful and thought a lot before he acted; he had very high standards and really wanted everything done right; he was very considerate of our needs; he was an excellent communicator and always answered all of our questions and concerns and always texted back promptly. We were never left in the dark; if there was a delay, we always knew what was going on. He really didn't forget things that had to be done; he always always reminded himself before we had to. He was able to deal with the unusual problems we had very well and also helped us out by doing a few unrelated jobs that came up suddenly. When changes had to be made, his charges were reasonable. We also really liked his subcontractors and thought he worked with them well. Joe always came when he said he would. Joe really did go above and beyond and added some very nice touches which made a big difference, like a hand-made radiator cover for our steam radiator. Or when he saved us hundreds of dollars in freight costs by going to pick up our butcher block himself. Overall, what impressed us most was how resourceful and knowledgeable Joe is. This job took eight months, and it was overall a pleasant experience mostly because Joe is a thoughtful, considerate guy.

Working with Desiderio Construction was wonderful! We trusted them 100% with every aspect of our renovation and would do it again but only if they were with us! The quality of their work is incredible and every subcontractor that walked onto the site was just as wonderful, both in quality as well as personality. I cannot say enough about this team. They are passionate about what they do and treat your home as though it is their own and are truly wonderful people.

Steve is fantastic to work with. We did a complete kitchen gutting and 1st floor bathroom, and changed the floor plan of the house. Steve was extremely well organized and planned out. Was able to coordinate well with multiple subcontractors and because of that our job came in on time (which mattered greatly because we did it during the dead of winter!). Went well out of his way to be accommodating to our needs (we were pretty involved throughout). Unlike so many other contractors, Steve laid out payment amounts and dates for the agreed to part of the work, and then we dealt with extra work as it came up. Just a total pleasure to deal with and someone we will use in all of our future home improvements.

I bought a condo in Fairfield that needed extensive renovations ... it was original from the 70's. I had hired Murphy Bros. to fix some closet doors which he did an excellent job on . He and his crew continued on and helped me with the entire renovation! Jack is a pleasant college educated individual who seems to love his work as well as helping people out. If there was a job that he and his crew could not handle he found me the right subcontractor to do the job and saved me thousands of dollars. He also has a great eye for design ... he assisted me in the selection and purchase of materials and appliances, again cutting down on the total cost. Jack and his crew are very thorough and clean. I would come home from work, and the place was spotless! I have referred Jack to many friends and business associates, and all have had similar experiences . I would highly recommend Murphy Brothers!

We had an interior remodel done on 2/3rds of our house. Electric service upgrade to 200 amps all new wiring, recessed lights & hanging/wall lights in every room. Wall between dinning room/kitchen removed, main bathroom, laundry room-1/2bath storage area, part of the garage demoed to the studs. New mud room, hallway, storage area, separate laundry room & full 2nd bathroom w/glass enclosed shower, tiled floors through where created from old space, paint & crown molding finish.New kitchen cabinets, island, sideboard in dinning area, granite counters,appliances,sub-floor & new coretec oak top floor Crown molding & new paint finished off the kitchen/dinning area.. All new main bathroom, replaced tile, tube, toilet, vanity & relocated the linen closet.Paint & crown molding completed the room. New tank-less hot water heater, all new plumbing & wast pipes. This took 5 months & during the project Harry Leonard stayed on top of all the work/workers & changes we made. Always keep us up to date on the progress, always called/texted you back if he didn't answer first. He caught most mistakes made by workers before they left the job & walked us thru each phase, resolving any concerns we had.He also hired a couple of subs that didn't make any mistakes, namely the electrician, who was probably on the job site the longest. We passed every inspection the first time!! I can list many more reasons why I would use this company again but the main one is Harry. He was always on the job when when work was being done or meet us when we had questions/changes. He has pleasant, skilled workers & sub-contractors. Whenever he gave us a price it was in writing & didn't change. He was not shy about telling us if our changes won't work & always had a solution to our wants. We would definitely spend our hard earned money again with this company. If anyone would like to talk to us or see our remodel please feel free to call me 732-233-4845. One bit of advise, if you get new cabinets try to recycle the cardboard yourself. We didn't do that & had to pay for an extra dumpster. Thanks, Mike & Ann Marie M.

I have used Caro Construction for four major projects now, and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them for all of my future jobs. This is a brief outline of some of his work for me personally from 2011 to present: 1. Apartment conversion: I had need of carpentry services to remodel and convert a large apartment I own into two smaller units. This required putting up walls, creating a new entryway and hanging doors, planning and installing a kitchen, and remodeling a bathroom. 2. Kitchen gut/remodel: This job was instigated by a water leak and an insurance claim, but we had the kitchen gutted to the studs and joists from the ceiling down. Mr. Caro worked in tandem with my insurance adjuster to handle the job on my behalf before I arrived in person to see the final result. He was very professional and the results were fantastic and economical. 3. Frozen pipe insurance claim: I had a hot water baseboard heating pipe in the wall burst in the middle of winter in one unit of a 4 unit apartment building. Mr. Caro once again worked in tandem with my insurance company to make repairs to the affected second story unit as well as the unit immediately below. This repair required subcontracting for plumbing repairs and flooring replacement, tearing out and replacing walls, insulation, and a ceiling. The job was done very quickly and very well, and when part of the insurance claim became an issue (some materials were not replaceable due to age - ceiling tiles from 1960) he worked with me to creatively and economically resolve the situation. 4. Replace front entryway stairs and porch repair: The entry to my 4 unit apartment building had stairs that were not mounted correctly below the frost line and they moved and rotted as a result. He tore the stairs off, leveled the entire structure, made some minor repairs replacing some floor boards and all rails, and built a new, level, much better staircase. 5. Many miscellaneous repairs and interior remodeling and finish work: over the years of getting great service from Caro Carpentry, I came to depend on him for all my maintenance and repairs for both my house and my 4 unit apartment building. I have found him to have excellent communication skills, accurate bids, and he’s very honest and pleasant to deal with. He was very professional in his dealings with me, with other contractors he brought in for specific stages of the work in progress, and gave frequent progress reports as well as communicating the next steps during the entire process. I was very pleased with the end results of all my projects. The quality of his subcontractors was also such that I have used several of them several times for other jobs, as well.

Mr Bratkovic worked on a larger remodel for us, and several other smaller projects. A few things stand out: 1/ Honest and trustworthy; 2/ Attention to detail; 3/ Broad-based knowledge and 4/ Very easy to work with. He is well educated professionally and can do a lot of different types of work himself (rather than hiring various subcontractors). Happy to recommend him.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
