for me, there were several things that were important in this party. The food, obviously! but also the guidance and planning that is a part of a party. We did a casual wedding for 120 ppl at a difficult location, under very challenging conditions. Ellen and her staff were very limited for setup time, so more time would have let her set up all the grand ideas that she had. There were points during the planning where I felt Ellen was more exited about the affair than I was! she was that invested. She worked closely with me, guiding me throughout, ready with ideas, keeping me focused to give me the best value possible while developing a vision! We wanted an elegant and eclectic brunch ,with lots of variety but keeping it to a reasonable price point. I look forward to working with her again, maybe I'll cater Passover this year!!!

Bacco Catering was a great choice for our event. We used them for a charity event at our store and they performed incredibly. Our guest were so pleased as many of them asked me " who are the caterers, this food and service is amazing". Thank you Lauren so much for such a great night.

From start to finish, Tamara was a dream to work with!! We threw an engagement cocktail party for 45 people, and Tamara worked with us during the weeks that we spent planning, to make sure every detail was perfect along the way. Communication was extremely fast (mostly over email, which made it very easy to get some planning in during work hours). We opted for a tasting before the party, so that we could choose exactly what we wanted, and it was fantastic! Everything was absolutely delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. After that we were sure the party would be perfect. We ended up choosing the sliders, chicken tacos, pork empanadas, truffled mushroom wontons (a BIG hit), grilled cheese toasties with tomato soup (a HUGE hit), and crab cakes. As for the actual event, the before, during and after went as smoothly as we could have hoped for. Pre-party setup was quick and efficient. The food prep and distribution during the party was very professional - all of the food was served to our guests warm and fresh, and no one left hungry. In fact, there were just enough leftovers left over for me to enjoy the next day :) All in all, Tamara and her team helped make it a really special event, and I would recommend her to anyone!

Ericka is fantastic. I am a vegan diabetic. She comes up with interesting menus for us every week and is always conscience of all of my food requirements. Her food is healthy and delicious. She also cooks for my children, who love her food and are very picky. She encourages us to try new things which most often, we love. I would highly recommend her services.

Chef Martin catered my mother’s 100th birthday party. Working with him was easy from the start. Together we came up with the perfect menu. Chef Martin was responsive and proactive throughout, anticipating and addressing any potential problems in advance. When the day came, the meal was delicious and beautiful. The birthday cake was divine. We were able to fully enjoy the event because he and his server were so competent and professional.

We had a wonderful time at our group cooking class at La Pulperia. Chef Carlos and his team were so gracious (accommodating of food allergies) and the food was delicious - empanadas, salmon tartar, guacamole and ricotta gnocchi (which we learned how to make). We enjoyed making one of their signature cocktails and sipped wine (and tequila). Thanks to Chef Carlos and everyone at La Pulperia for such a fun and unique time. Also, thanks so much to Tyler for setting everything up!

Melissa was great. We had an in-depth conversation up front about our dietary restrictions including a shellfish allergy, a gluten sensitivity, and a dairy sensitivity within our party. Overall, we were aiming for a vegan meal. She worked with us and gave us multiple suggestions on dinner options based on our likes and dislikes. She even came by the house to provide samples of her dishes before the event. The night of the event, she did a great job executing appetizers, dinner, and dessert. The food was delicious and she left our kitchen in better shape than she found. I highly recommend Melissa as your next personal chef!

Carol Foster catered my wedding in New York in August 2, 2014.. OMG I do not know where to start, Ms.Carol and her team went above and beyond to make sure this event was successful. She catered 500 people but on that day there were more than 500 people. Mind you that I am African so we throw large party even when you do not plan for it to be that large so my max was 500 not knowing what will happen that day...However, Ms. Carol did not panic and worked successful with my coordinator. From the beginning she worked with our budget and was able to help us with some of her recommendation of the dishes. She and her team were there on time. From the reviews of family members, friends and the guests of the event stated that her food was really good and tasty. They were very professional. Ms. Carol is the best and I will use her again in a heart beat. She made my wedding dreams come through. Oh she also has a great personality and a warm nature person and will work with you no matter your budget. What attracted my coordinator and I was her personality and after the food tasting which was done by my fiancé at that time and two of my siblings since I was located in Texas. So I was praying to hear good news from the tasters and they told me her food was really good among the other caterers and her house was very organized and neat. Ms. Carol keep on with the great job you do and God bless you and your team. YOU ARE THE BEST.

I could not be more satisfied with JP's work. For a week or two leading up to my networking event, JP communicated with me regularly and with great responsiveness to make sure everything went perfectly. I wanted to make sure we had enough food for 50 guests within a tight budget. To be honest, I was worried we would run out, but JP made it work while providing exceptional quality. All of my guests were wowed by his simple, yet impressive hors d'oeuvres. His work ethic at the event was above and beyond. And to top it all off, JP is a great guy. Doing business with JP felt like doing business with a good friend. The level of trust and willingness to go beyond his job description really show why JP is the guy to go to. I would highly recommend JP and will be pursuing his service again for a similar event in the spring. Thank you, JP!

I just hosted a very successful new year eve dinner party for 15 catered by Jeffrey. He was professional responsive, punctual and most importantly a great chef. 4 different hors d'oeuvres were served during cocktail hours before we sat down for a delicious 5 course dinner. I will definitely use Jeff again.

As the marketing coordinator for my firm, it's my job to plan and facilitate events. I recently moved back to NYC and don't have many go-to's as far as vendors go. I asked around and several friends suggested rsvp based on their own experiences. I'm certainly glad I decided to use them for our new office launch! The entire process was flawless (the initial proposal, a few minor changes, the event itself, payment and follow-up) and the food we received for our event was delicious! Since it was a spring/rooftop event, we went with mini sliders, skewers, homemade potato chips, etc. Renee, our manager, went beyond her duties to help me set up for the event (helping move our furniture, etc) aside from the food and she was extremely friendly (even though it was 85 degrees and super humid, which could make anyone cranky!)

I hired elemental catering for my husbands 30 birthday and I struck gold! There food and presentation was absolutely stunning. Everything had a fine dining touch to it. It was very professional and elegant. I am definitely going to hire them again next time I need a caterer. Everyone at the party keeps taking about the food, and many of my friends want to hire them for their parties. Thanks again :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
