Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Where is the best place to take baby pictures?

Baby pictures are among the most popular types of portrait photography, and most newborn photographers are well versed in the best places to take baby pictures in their local areas. Some newborn photographers will come to the hospital to shoot the baby within a day or two of birth, while others have set up their studios to accommodate the needs of infants. Some parents prefer to have the newborn photographer come to their home or travel to a favorite park or other outdoor location. Like any portrait photography, the best place to take baby pictures is the place you like best and that will yield the types of photos you want of your baby, whether that’s posed and carefully lit studio portraits or spontaneous, casual photos at home. Work with a local newborn photographer to find a safe, calm location with great lighting and some privacy for your family.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

Enjoyed working with Nikola for my graduation portraits! Was a bit nervous since it was my first time doing an individual portrait shoot, but he is great at expressing ideas to me and we discussed our thoughts throughout the shoot. Amazing response time. I got to see and personally selected my favorite photos for edits. Definitely recommend!

Dag took portraits of 4 teams in our organization for an annual review publication. It was a challenging assignment with really narrow specs from a lead photographer in the Netherlands. Dag took all 4 portraits in one day. There were a few bumps in the process - his assistant didn't show, we weren't clear with him on what was to be delivered - but Dag handled these and made it clear he wanted to get things right for us. Most importantly, the final photos worked for the project!

We did a Manhattan mural based photoshoot with 7ography. We were very happy with Kevin’s willingness to go to several locations and operate in the busy streets of the city. He captured moments of interaction between us beautifully. We definitely recommend him for portrait photography.

I am turning 30 and want to have a portrait session to memorize it. Jovana did a fabulous job capturing the very good side of me and the beautiful foliage in Central Park! I am extremely impressed by all the photos and they are arts. I wish I met Jovana earlier!

I’m very happy with the photos he created. After the brief phone calls regarding my idea of the final product, he prepared his backdrops, lighting, and all the other equipment that we needed for the photo-shoot. Despite his soft and polite character, his direction was sharp and clear which made our session so smooth and productive. I definitely recommend Baris for your next portraits/headshots!

Mariachi was quick to respond, priced reasonably, and easy to communicate with. UPDATE: Our pictures turned out fantastic!!! Mariachi was a pleasure to work with. She took so many photos and spent so much time with us. I wish I had thought to include her in one of our family photos :) Our main goal was to incorporate the essence of NYC into our portraits since we were visiting the city. Mission accomplished.

I had a fantastic experience working with Markell! I wanted some professional portraits taken because I didn't have any professional photos, and I am so happy I chose to work with Markell. I was super uncomfortable at first but Markell's fun personality helped me loosen up, and I ended up having a great time! Markell is super professional and responsive, and produced great photos in a very timely manner. I highly recommend him!

Maria was wonderful for our portrait shoot and I’d highly recommend her! She was quick to respond to any of my questions and very helpful with our last minute request to use her. She is very friendly and blended well with everyone on my team. Each year we do an over glamorized photo shoot and she captured exactly what we wanted. Excellent work, and promptly gave us all our photos. I would absolutely use Maria again in the future!!

I hired Dorothy for a professional portrait as my boyfriend’s surprise birthday present. In the three weeks leading up to the event, she responded to my questions clearly and quickly, and offered good price / value for the shot. When we got to her studio, the experience was really time-efficient - we got ~200 raw photos in about three settings, and had 5 selected for retouching. The photos were stunning (we also found out that she was a White House photographer!) and delivered instantly. She offered good suggestion for posture and editing as well. Would totally hire Dorothy again for future events.

Alex was the consummate professional to work with from start to finish. He answered every question I had and was very flexible with my schedule (even having to reschedule once on my short notice). I hired Alex to take both my self- and family portraits for my recent graduation at Columbia and I don't believe any other professional could have captured this very special moment in my life any better. Alex was very professional and so friendly throughout the process that my family and I had a wonderful time walking through campus taking multiple shots. Alex even finalized my photo portfolio the same day and I greatly appreciated such a swift and short turnaround! I will be hiring Alex for future photo shoots and know that I am in great hands for amazingly, high quality photos.

I enjoyed my shoot with Hans. He was very patient. I showed Hans pics of what I wanted to recreate and he said we couldn't do some of them (use of props, etc) but with the help of my friend that I brought with me --we were able to recreate most of the poses, shots I hoped for. This was a shoot for my birthday so I wanted to get really creative --I think Hans is more of a family portrait photographer. Either way--beautiful pictures. Thank you!

I honestly cannot say enough about Marijana and how great she is. My fiance and I, originally from North Carolina, were visiting New York City for the weekend and wanted engagement/portrait type photos while visiting; so we hired Marijana just a few weeks prior to our visit. From the time we met Marijana, she made the session and process so easy for us! We absolutely loved it! And LOVE how the photos turned out. She was so easy to work with! Her attention to detail and finding the perfect light made our photos perfect and we are so pleased with our experience. Not only that, we also feel like we made a new friend in New York City! Thank you so much, Marijana! We now have pictures that will last a lifetime! -Jenna and Erik

We hired Joe to do a family portrait session for us in early August. From beginning communications to the end result, we were thoroughly impressed by Joe, and we would highly recommend him for anything and will look forward to using him again. Joe was extremely professional, timely in communication as well as production of our photos, and helpful in recommending locations and creative ideas for the shoot. In addition, Joe listened to our ideas and made the utmost effort to see those ideas come to life during the shoot. We were thankful to have found him and are very satisfied with the overall experience. Good luck in your future ventures Joe!
