I can't say enough good things about our experience with Milton. If you read nothing else of this review, Milton and his team are extraordinarily professional, efficient, clean, considerate, extremely pleasant people to work with and they held our hands throughout the whole process, accommodating multiple changes to the original plan! And it was affordable! My boyfriend and I wanted to order a whole apartment's worth of furniture from IKEA and had no idea how the process worked- but we had an extremely tight timeline and needed it delivered and assembled early the following week. Milton walked us through every step, was available to assemble everything on a day that worked for us (it was a Thursday or Friday when we spoke to Milton and he came on the next Tuesday), and when we had what felt like endless issues with IKEA delivery, Milton and his staff offered up multiple solutions and were extremely flexible (they ended up picking up all of the furniture from our friend's apartment- in the evening and on very short notice!). In the days leading up to the move, Milton or a staff member responded immediately to all of my texts and calls (many of which were sent over the weekend). When it came time to assemble, Milton and his coworker were precise and clean, breaking down and getting rid of over 60 boxes before we even got to the apartment. They set up all of the furniture based off of a very rough drawing I sent to them. They also agreed to mount our TV and to receive our mattress delivery and unpack that, both of which weren't originally requested. If you have any concerns about using an outside company to assemble your furniture, Milton is absolutely the way to go. I can't imagine that anyone else in the business works as carefully and is as accommodating as these guys.

The installation in my apartment was efficient, artful and well-executed. I have done this a few times and this was by far the best experience I have had. Twenty-five or so pieces were hung on my walls in under two hours and very well hung at that.

Arturo was a lifesaver as another upholsterer I hired wasn't able to complete my the project in time. Arturo came to measure at my clients apartment, picked up a chair and ottoman I needed recovered and fabricated two flat roman shades with a wide trim banding. All of this work was completed perfectly and within my needed time frame. Client is ecstatic and I am thrilled I've found another great upholsterer in NYC.

Leonardo is THE BEST! came on time, very professional, extremely experienced and has a calm and friendly demeanor. He put together a bookcase, a bench and hung some pictures for me and he was really pleasant to hang out with. Honest and diligent and calm...all traits that make having someone in your apartment with a toddler much easier! I would hire him again in a second and his pricing was extremely fair.

I met Maggie on my birthday in 2017 and have been working with her ever since. We work together room by room and she has transformed my apartment into a beautiful experience. I love coming home every evening and can’t wait to get home to enjoy it now. Maggie is creative and knows how to work with people on a budget. She searched far and wide for the right accessories and creatively repurposed the things I already owned. We are just finishing our work together but I wish I had even more rooms to style so I can keep working with her!! I recommend her highly and you will be thrilled to have her work with you too! Working with Bharti was very helpful in decorating my living/dining room. We had moved into a new house and our furniture was old and did not fit well into our new space. Bharti came and measured everything and formed ideas about what our preferences were. Then she drew up a few very detailed plans to help me visualize the different things we could do with our space. She helped me to pick paint colors, curtains and rods, sofas, rugs, chairs, etc. Now my room is beautiful and many friends have complimented our new look. Bharti was also pleasant to work with. She was timely in her responses and patient when I was indecisive. She is a professional designer and can guide you through your project with ease. I can recommend hiring Bharti for your designing needs.

We contacted Carmine for a small job in our apartment. We needed to run a cable from one side of the apartment to the other, along the walls and above a door. After sending him some pictures, Carmine came to look at the apartment in person, and told us what our options were. He then went looking for material, and sent us pictures of all the different options we could use. Carmine was always very prompt in replying by text, extremely approachable, professional, and actually nice to interact with. In the end he described us how we could do the work on our own, and we ended up saving a couple of hundred bucks thanks to his suggestions and honesty. We trust Carmine and would not hesitate to contact him for future jobs.

I had found Ursallie through this site and I am so glad I did! She did a fabulous job in "refreshing" my apartment. She helped me break out of my box and suggest amazing ideas when it came to paint colors, furniture and wall accents. She even refurbished my couch and lounge chair based on her own design and it came out beautiful. She was always professional and got back to me right away. She also has a great personality and made me feel at ease. What made me feel even better was that she personally over saw all the work. She was at my apartment with the workers and paid great attention to detail. She never pushed me into anything. For that I am grateful. I highly suggest using Rococo Design. You won't regret it!

I recently moved into a 3 bedroom apartment w/ a loft. The challenge to furnish and decorate a place that would feel like a home for my kids and I seemed quite overwhelming. I found Jenine on thumbtack and she was the perfect choice to help design our new home. Jenine is talented, warm, and extremely collaborative. In addition, she knows how to work within the client's budget. She turned a potentially stressful time into a fun experience. It started the first time we met her when she listened to both me and my kids about what we wanted the place to look and feel like. She took those ideas, blended them with her own experience, and created a warm and friendly environment for everyone. Jenine is very creative, brings a wealth of ideas, and is full of energy. I would recommend her for any job, big or small.

It is not everyday you find a person like Ivan. His passion and love for his art is evident in all he does. From the initial meeting, I was impressed. He also has a way of making you feel comfortable and at ease with any project he helps you tackle. I used Ivan for all my decorating needs in my home plus his touch in my garden have made me the envy of my neighborhood. I greatly recommend Peacock Home and Garden Designs. You will not regret entrusting Ivan, if you want a fabulous decorator who also is very knowledgeable and pleasant he is the one!

A Wicked Wand transformed by house from a 1990's throwback to a 2016 home ready for sale. My original plan called for a simple painting job but A Wicked Wand saw the potential and swept through the entire house, updating, painting ceilings and brickwork. The choice of colors was brilliant with each room flowing to the next, matching and contrasting with on-trend colors and detail work that home buyers were clamoring for. A Wicked Wand went even further, staging my home, adding lighting features, curtains and fresh flowers. In the end, my home was buyer ready and a joy to show. A Wicked Wand was the best thing to happen to my old house and I'm sure the transformation made all the difference in the eventual sale.

I am not one to normally go online and leave a review for a company, but we had the pleasure of working with Stephen and Gail, and after the wonderful experience we had with them, we felt strongly about doing so. We are now living in what is our NYC dream apartment....what they did for our space is outstanding, and we adored them as well...2 of the nicest and most talented people you could ever work with.

Soudi has an uncanny ability to quickly discern the the needs of her client. The existing assets, the desired change, the need or willingness to "push the envelope" on design while respecting the budget, were all accompanied by a very innovative and beautiful solution to the project. I love working with Soudi as she is full of life, energetic, imaginative and most of all makes me laugh. Designing and decorating with Soudi is a fun job. No job is too big - from architectural changes such as moving walls and adding bathrooms - or too small such as designing new window treatments. A mundane kitchen was transformed with changing entrance doors and adding unique cabinet designs and lighting. A bedroom was transformed with with minimal window shades and reframing existing artwork. Bathrooms had new fixtures, lighting and tile trim. The same can be said for every room in the condo that she completely renovated and furnished, all from 1000 miles away! She is truly Magic.

Five years ago, Sandy helped us immeasurably with choosing the paint colors in our home. We were at a complete loss and she guided us toward colors that were a perfect fit. Now we are doing some work on our kitchen and needed to match the paint we used five years ago, however completely forgot which color it was. I emailed Sandy to see if she remembered and she offers to come over with her color wheel and figure it out. Within five minutes she had it figured out. Today it was painted and it's a perfect match!

We had worked with other designers over the years and there was always a problem with communication. Helen helped us with our city apartment and our country house without any miscommunication . Working on a budget posed no problem for her. She intuitively understood our vision and provided options that we would happily live with for years to come. She is excellent at follow-thru and follow-up even after our project was completed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
