Joe stopped by and was the only contractor to make the effort to get ON my roof. He could have tried to sell me a new roof. Instead - he offered some solutions and worked on those repair solutions the same day. HIGHLY recommended.

I hired Jeff to build a gable roof over my upper deck. With the odd shape of my deck that wasn't possible, so he built me a hip roof instead. The roof is beautiful, the ceiling is finished with tongue and groove pine, 8 recessed lights and a ceiling fan. He also replaced many of the floor boards between the upper and lower deck and built a railing around the upper deck. Our deck was 27 yrs. old so there was a lot of settling and things were not built correctly from the previous contractor which he fixed , digging more support posts, leveling and stabilizing the entire frame of the deck. He is very meticulous and detailed in his work and always kept me informed of what needed to be done. I couldn't be happier with the end result, and I have had many compliments. It took a little longer to complete than I anticipated but It was well worth the wait. I would definitely hire again.

I was referred to Scott for gutters by an acquaintance for whom he had done windows. I needed new gutters and requested a quote. Scott was very responsive and replied quickly to set up an appointment. After taking measurements he walked me through his process and product which compared very favorably to other quotes I received. I also needed gutter guards due to issues with birds nesting which he provided including literature to allow me to do additional research. The overall quote he provided was quite competitive especially after he called back to let me know he was able to change suppliers to get the gutter guards at a slightly lower price. That and the consistent high-quality of service provided during negotiations easily won my business. Our original install date was pushed back due to inclement weather but Scott was very timely with letting me know and providing an alternative date on which the work was completed. The new gutters look great and have provided exactly the results for which I was hoping. When it's time for windows, a roof, or other items, Scott's Remodeling will be first on my list!

Empire did my roof and my siding this spring. I was very impressed with not only the quality and value of everything I received for the price but the fact that this family genuinely cared for, and addressed my concerns and needs. It’s fairly difficult to trust someone in this day and age. I’m really happy I chose them to do my work , since then they’ve done my neighbors roof and my mothers roof. 0 complaints and they all look great! Would recommend them to anyone. Great honest people that care about their work. Gina B.

Allstate is an amazing business. Living in a "fixer upper" I have interacted with a great deal of contractors, most not being a positive interaction. I was floored by the pleasantness of the workers, both with each other and with my family. They set up perimeters and protection for plants where necessary without me having to ask, and they cleaned up well every night. Additionally, I appreciated that their style is to work hard (extremely long days) on one job so that they are finished very quickly! The last contractors took bits and pieces of two weeks to finish and did incredibly shotty work, whereas Allstate was done in THREE DAYS and the roof looks incredible. Our roof has some tricky areas with "dormers" right by the chimney and the last company left several leaks there... Allstate's job manager took significant time answering all my questions, and explaining the difference in what they were doing so that the leaking would not occur. Lastly, in their final clean up they go around the yard with a large magnet to be sure that there are no rogue nails, which had a much better result than the last company that left nails everywhere for my kids to "find" all over our yard. So overall, I would highly recommend Allstate. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and incredible craftmanship really sets them apart. In addition to everything else they are a genuinely caring company. I actually won the new roof in a reach out to mothers, one of several people groups they're targeting for give aways... It was really nice to see a business being so generous and trying to reach people who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford a new roof. Thank you to Allstate for making my Mother's Day an incredible one!

Pat installed hardwood floors in our dining room and living room. He removed all the old carpeting, removed the trim, and then reinstalled the trim after the floors were done. He did an excellent job and always cleaned up after a day's work. He also replaced the drywall in the upstairs bathroom ceiling after our roof had leaked. Again, he did an excellent job.

Rick Mincer - RAM Construction Rick - assisted by his son Richie - worked on a house we bought while we were on vacation in Florida. The house is a 3 BR Ranch on a village lot w/an attached 2 car garage & covered patio. Built in 1964, the house was purchased "as is" and was in the process of being fixed up after sitting unused for around 10 years and having had a roofing problem that caused some interior damage. We had RAM complete some of the water damage work prior to doing some major remodeling in the MBR & Bath. The bath was totally remodeled with all new fixtures and drywall. The MBR received a new sheetrock ceiling replacing the orig. 12" sq tiles and repairs to the walls before redecorating. The Kitchen was gutted and a complete new Kitchen with all new appliances was competed next. In the process of working on the kitchen, the boiler on the heating system failed and we decided to replace all of that system with a new forced air furnace. RAM worked with Main Plumbing & Heating on that project and also supplied temporary heat by setting up some temp electric heat units in the basement. RAM worked for us for 3 months - while we were in Florida - our input was to visit Lowe's and pick out things we wanted and they picked them up & installed them. We're very pleased with Rick's work and plan to use RAM to remodel the 2nd bathroom and do some more work on trim & prep for getting other areas ready for paint, in the next few weeks.

      About

My business is family oriented and also owned. I have been in the construction business since I was a little one. Starting in Florida, I just recently moved to New York in the last 3 years, where my business has been built up from the ground up by me and my wife. Business was slow at first but has also been slowly building. I am a man who stands by his word. I'm not like most of these contractors who go around stiffing the people of Rochester. I am an honest person who is willing to work with my customers. I do free estimates for all my customers. I also probably come in lower than most of the contractors out there. Also, nine times out of ten, I'll actually do it better than my competitors here in Rochester, NY.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Can a roof be cleaned?

Yes roofs can be cleaned, and yes, it’s a real thing. Roof cleaning may actually be a wise investment to prolong the life of your roof. Overgrowth of moss, grime, lichen or algae can all shorten the life of your roof. If you have black streaks growing on your roof, they are likely caused by gloeocapsa magma algae spores that have landed on your roof and taken up residence. Once the algae has grown into streaks, the organism has usually been growing for several months and it’s high time to have it removed. If you live in a rainy part of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, there’s a good chance you’ll find moss growing on your roof at some point. The northern part of your roof, as well as any parts that remain shaded all day, will provide a wet, cool haven for moss to flourish. Unfortunately this water-absorbing moss can damage your shingle roof, leading to rot if not removed. Beyond roof health and function, a clean roof can boost your curb appeal and potentially boost your home’s resale value. The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350, although prices can be higher depending on how large your roof is, how steep your roof is, and what type of cleaning is necessary. Typically pros use either a pressure wash or chemical wash (made with a concentrated bleach solution) to remove algae, lichen, moss and dirt.

Why do I need to clean my roof?

Over time, algae, moss, lichen, dirt and even salt (if you’re near the ocean) can build up on your roof. These buildups can affect the look and function of your roof unless removed. The buildup of organic materials such as moss on a shingle roof can prevent water from sloughing off as it normally would. Trapped water can rot the roof or cause early deterioration of your shingles. Even if you don’t have a shingle roof, moss and lichen absorb water, and that wet material adds weight and stress to your roof — as well as providing a home for insects and other pests, and collecting dirt. For reflective, cool roofs that redirect heat away from the home, algae and moss growths can hamper their ability to deflect the sun, which can affect utility bills. Visually, moss, dirt and algae growths on a roof can have a negative effect on perceived home value and curb appeal. For example, black algae streaks on your roof may cause a potential homebuyer to assume that the roof might need repair or replacement, when it only needs to be cleaned.

How much does it cost to clean a roof?

The national average for roof cleaning costs ranges between $270 and $350. Factors that can affect the cost to clean your roof are the height of your house, the size and pitch (steepness) of your roof, and the complexity of your roof’s design and accessibility. Geographic location also plays a role in roof cleaning costs as regional labor rates and area costs to do business will vary. There are several ways to clean a roof. The most common is pressure washing. Industrial pressure washers can spray over 3,000 pounds per square inch (psi) of water — which is much too powerful for roof cleaning, and may tear off shingles and damage your roof. Confirm that the roof-cleaning pro you choose will only use a low-pressure sprayer to protect your roof investment. For large algae or moss growths, pros often recommend a combination of low-pressure washing with a bleach-based chemical solution. This is referred to soft washing and should handily remove any growths taking over your roof.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
