I used Arbor Tutors for math and English tutoring for both the GMAT and the GRE (I didn't know what I wanted to do for grad school). I ended up in the top 10% for the GRE and 720 on the GMAT. My tutor was amazing!!! I was so happy my boyfriend hired Arbor for Spanish tutoring. Super happy!

Sara gave me a free 45 minute lesson and introduction to her Spanish tutoring program. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to start soon. She was completely professional, and a total sweet heart. I look forward to working with her.

Gloria was asked to provide Spanish tutoring for two high school boys using the Vista Higher Learning Descubre curriculum. She has done a great job, both boys have gained confidence and feel much more prepared and familiar with the material.

James was the perfect fit for our teenager, for both ACT tutoring and college application/essay coaching. Not only did the ACT scores in question jump 5 points to a high score, but he had a pragmatic and helpful approach to the college process that was very well received. He had a positive outlook and cultivated confidence in our son, who had been a little nervous about the application process. James came to our house and was always polite, professional and on time. So far we've had all positive decisions from colleges and are so grateful!

Needed math strategy tips, study planning advice, as well as general supplementary algebra 2 tutoring to get my algebra on the college level necessary to pass the CLEP exam. Aron was extremely helpful in both directing me to areas that needed improvement and in helping me improve them. Definitely recommended. 5 stars!

Ainna has been tutoring me in french 1-on-1 for the past 2 years and I truly look forward to her lessons. She spends time preparing for my individual needs before each lesson so our time together is very productive. In addition to the subject of the lesson I find I am always learning about other idiosyncrasies of the french language just through her casual comments. Her appreciation for the subtleties of French is impressive. Her lessons are very reasonably priced. She is not someone who sits and counts the seconds and is always lively and pleasant to be with. My progress was evident to me recently on a visit to France. I highly recommend her!!

My daughter is a student at the University of Arizona. This summer she had to take Chemistry 2, a semester class crammed into 3 1/2 weeks. The first few weeks she was really struggling and in jeopardy of failing the class. I decided to look for a tutor online, and found Howard. I emailed him and he immediately got back to me. He began tutoring her the very next day and everyday until the end of the class. He was incredible and helped to turn my daughters grade around. He is fiercely intelligent, compassionate, punctual, patient and a FANTASTIC teacher. I definitely recommend.

In 2014, I took an Introduction to Linguistics class with Prof. Mary Ryan at LaGuardia Community College. Prof. Ryan is an exceptional and considerate teacher, she understands each student’s needs and is driven to advance them. She is one of the most dedicated professors I’ve had during my academic career. After taking her class, I gained a fundamental knowledge of Linguistics, which inspired me to return to school and pursue my Bachelor’s degree after 25 years. To me, Prof. Ryan is an inspiration and a role model. Rosa Amaya

“Ivy League Tutors has helped tremendously with everything academic. Their tutoring methods are superior to anything else I have tried, which helped me study for the Biology SAT and have an extraordinary edge over others. In an efficient and interesting manner I was able to learn more than I ever had before on my own or with other tutors, and I received help in many other aspects like colleges, math, and chemistry. I will be sure to continue using Ivy League Graduate Tutors for all of my needs that I am sure they will greatly help” - Ron Fishman, Old Tappan, NJ

I've worked with many tutors over the years and Zoe is in a class of her own. She comes prepared with relevant lesson plans and sends helpful notes after each of session. She is simultaneously intentional and adaptable. Her approach is creative, encouraging and goal oriented. Of all of the tutors I've worked with, I've made the most progress with Zoe. She is a star!

For me, working with Claryliz couldn’t have been more rewarding or helpful. Not only was she extremely punctual and nice, but she was also very flexible with her schedule as well, which was useful for me as a busy high school student. Before I began tutoring with Claryliz, I’m convinced I would’ve easily received a 3 at best on the AP Bio exam. Although I go to a very good school, my AP Biology teacher was not giving nearly enough of a rigorous curriculum for us to be prepared to take the AP and do well. Once I began tutoring with Claryliz, I felt not only more prepared, but more confident in my ability to take the test and do well. The test that seemed so foreign quickly seemed less challenging. I ended up getting a 4 on the exam, and due to only utilizing Claryliz as a resource a month or two before the exam, I’m convinced that had I taken the initiative to begin sooner, I would’ve easily scored a 5. I have only good things to say about her work ethic and her teaching style, and I would highly recommend her to anyone who feels underprepared or needs help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

This summer I will be going to Italy for two weeks to visit some friends. While I am there I will be visiting Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Ponza, Naples, and many other cities in the south. Before I go I would like to have some basic knowledge of the Italian language because the family and friends of the people that I am visiting don't speak English very well. I would also like to be able to communicate with the locals in the cities that I visit to make my experience even more memorable. In addition to learning the language, I want to learn more about the culture because I don't want to be egocentric and assume that every person I meet while I am there will speak English or be familiar with the American culture.
