I enlisted the help of Arbor Tutors to help me with test prep for grad school. Oh man! I am SUPER happy I did that. The tutoring manager walked me through the whole process and set me up with TWO tutors. They also said I could change tutors at any time, but I didn't need to. I was accepted into all of my top choices (Columbia, Penn, Cornell and Duke). I used the application services also (they reviewed my essays).

I started by going to a gmat prep course. I came to realize the course was not meant for people aiming for a score between 700-800 and that the sessions are meant to help the lowest common denominator in the class. When I had four weeks left before my exam date, I went on thumbtack and found Dan. Dan helped me go from 680 to 740 on my practice exams, and I ended up getting a 740 on the actual gmat. We worked on quant only, and Dan taught me a lot of tricks that made problems much simpler and saved time. Before Dan, I got a 42 on quant, and I got a 47 on the actual exam.

I started working with Kamil late in my college process. Many tutors doubted that I had enough time to prep and were only willing to work with me as a sort of "second hand client". With only two months left before my last possibly act during my senior year, Kamil and I worked day and night to achieve my goal score. Often meeting before and running after midnight only to see each other at six the next day, Kamil and I turned my test scores around to help me get into Cornell University. Kamil is kind, conscientious and committed. For him, standardized testing tutoring is a calling. He is his own brand.

Sasha tutored my Daughter this summer for a college level math course. My daughter has difficulty with math. Sasha was able to keep her interested and make her feel like passing the course was possible if she worked at it. Sasha instilled confidence in my daughter. She was an excellent tutor. My daughter passed the class and felt positive about the experience.

My daughter had the privilege of working with James on her ACT prep these past two months. My daughter who is very bright but struggles with focus and lack of confidence clicked nicely with James. He was extremely timely and easy to schedule with. Our daughter found his sessions to be very engaging and helpful not only with her ACT prep, but also with her regular studies. My daughter set an ACT goal for herself and was extremely surprised and thrilled that she scored beyond her goal. We highly recommend James as an ACT prep tutor!

I went to The Harvard Review for my GMAT Prep. All of my tutoring was done via Skype, as I live on the other side of the country. I took it twice during the time I received tutoring. My first score was with just a few weeks of prep, and I got a 670. I continued to work with Dr. Fikar, and ultimately achieved a score of 760! I would highly recommend him to anybody who wants to get a top score on the GMAT.

I first contacted Charles after sitting for my GMAT exam and being disappointed with my score. I thought I could do much better and after reading reviews of his tutoring work, I decided he would be best to help me improve my score. I was hoping Charles could show me where I was struggling because I felt I had a good handle on the material before each exam before. I purchased multiple GMAT tools from all the top courses, but apparently, I kept missing something. During my first session with Charles, he immediately knew how to solve each question efficiently, showing me multiple ways to arrive at the same answer. He also taught me mental math skills that saved me precious time in the difficult quant section. Charles was sincere in letting me know the amount of time and effort needed to score above 700. He planned out our sessions accordingly, making sure I mastered each topic before moving on. I appreciated how Charles set up our classes with short drill sets to test the concepts he taught me and if I continued to struggle with them, we would review until my understanding was concrete. After working with Charles three times a week for two months, I saw a 150 point increase in my official GMAT score. I would recommend Charles to anyone who plans on taking the GMAT or any other standardized exam.

My son took the SAT twice, in April and June of this year. He went from an 1170 to an 1130! He needed help, so luckily we got Mr. Goldstein. After 6-7 hrs. of tutoring, my son got his ticket to a better college....1260. It was worth it!

The owner consistently sent updates and summaries of the tutoring sessions. I highly recommend this company.

Thomas was one of the best tutors I have ever had. After trying a few other SAT tutors, I decided to stick with him. Thomas found different ways to help me understand specific topics and worked with me when I needed extra help. He's constantly researching new tutroing methods and implements them into his sessions. With his help, I was able to increase my SAT score by around 200 points. My parents even signed my sister up for tutoring with Thomas because they saw what an amazing tutor he was. After my SAT process was done, Thomas walked me through the college process and helped me with my essays. Because of him, I am going to college with a full scholarship and I will graduate debt free. Thomas is an amazing tutor and an amazing person. He builds connections with his students and their families that extend outside of the academic sphere. I could not be more grateful to Thomas for all that he has done for me and my family.

We all know when it comes to the SAT’s there is guaranteed to be a lot of stress. As a sixteen year old high school student going through the SAT process, I can vouch for this. My anxiety began months ago. I admired people who had started their SAT prep a year before, while envying students who were just naturally good test takers, scoring 2000 and up; however, when you don’t fit into either of those categories you start wondering what now? At that point an SAT tutor seemed like a good idea. Enter Danny Ahn. The first time I met Danny, I was unsure what to expect. He understood my confusion and began to structure a plan of action. He soon established the level I was at in English and Math, and then focused in. After a few sessions I began to understand the kind of approach required of me. I have worked with Danny Ahn weekly since around late October or early November, 2013 and our work is ongoing. It is now Feb. 17, 2014. I have found Danny to be a good communicator and listener. He is dedicated, nurturing, focused, and hardworking, going beyond his allotted time with me to help me achieve my goals. He genuinely cares about my mental well being as well as my academic standing. He is readily available on the phone and via text, and has proven to be accommodating with regards to scheduling. I believe that Danny is pushing me in the right direction and I am feeling increasingly more confident with regards to the dreaded upcoming SAT’s. Danny has an excellent understanding of the SAT requirements and I feel that with his continued guidance I can achieve my goals.

Ben has been my go-to math tutor for two years now. He is simply the best! I have worked with Ben on GMAT help (algebra, geometry, word problems, ect.) and Graduate-level school work (mainly statistics). Ben makes himself available all days of the week for tutor sessions. He is willing to meet in person or Skype with you. I do several sessions with Ben via Skype now because we live on separate sides of the coast. The reason I have continued to keep Ben as my tutor even after I relocated from NYC is because of how great of a math tutor he is and how well we get along. He has a very simple and relaxed way of breaking down problems and approaching them differently if you are struggling to understand the information. He can also help with a wide variety of mathematical subjects. My overall math grades and test scores have significantly improved thanks to Ben! He truly is a 5 star math tutor! Michelle

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

  • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
  • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
  • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
