Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Training with Jacqueline has been great! I'd never had a personal trainer before, so I didn't know what to expect, but she has been phenomenal about accommodating not only my schedule, but my personal preferences etc. She customizes each workout to fit my needs and is very encouraging without judgement. She is able to push me to do my best/work my hardest, but also helps me work around my limitations.

My overall experience with Eric has been outstanding. His approach to personal training is unique to me in that he takes a considerable amount of time listening to his clients in regard to their goals, and any obstacles they have faced in the past in achieving those goals. Eric is encouraging and supportive to his clients, and makes you feel comfortable regardless of your fitness level. He is professional as well as personable, which makes it a pleasure working with him. Anyone ready to make a commitment to achieving their fitness goals, and making a worthwhile investment in that journey should definitely contact Eric Sean. He is the best trainer I have worked with thus far.

I have started and restarted my fitness journey several times and have been successful. Throughout the years my weight increased due to unforeseen circumstances, life and age! I committed to getting back into shape and working with a trainer! I researched several trainers their certifications as well as their techniques to improve weight loss. I started at Clutch Fitness with Rayshawn! He is the best trainer I have ever had! He has a wealth of knowledge regarding fitness and his own personal story which has been an inspiration! Rayshawn has helped me with meal prep and meal planing, he has also made me extremely comfortable with discussing my fitness goals and working towards them! For most people exercising can be quite difficult while trying to juggle work, family and home. I have yet to meet a trainer who has as much patience as he does and thoroughly explains the workout routine by demonstration and amazingly he started working with me at my fitness level and continuously sets a individualized plan and pace suitable to my needs! Overall I have had an awesome experience and I look forward to working out with him even on the worst day!

I have found Aspire Fitness and my Personal Trainer, Gary, to be supportive, knowledgeable and an absolute pleasure to work with. The studio is very well equipped, clean, and has a relaxed yet professional atmosphere. The staff is friendly and willing to work with individuals on all levels, so I always feel supported and yet challenged. This place is a real gem and so is the instructor Gary. If you have a fitness goal in mind, they are more than accommodating in developing a program suited to specific individual needs. Could not be happier with every aspect of my experience here.

I looked into several personal trainers to help me lose a seemingly impossible amount of weight. When I met Joe Butler, his dynamic, positive energy was energizing and I knew Prescription Fitness was the place for me. He was encouraging, professional, and very motivating. He made me excited to undertake this change and challenge and felt empowered! I committed to a year and started personal training with Aaron the next week. Joe and Aaron created an exercise plan and routine for me and have challenged me to push harder and create new fitness goals. Aaron is an amazing motivator, especially when I am being hard on myself. I joined October 1, 2014 and as of 12/27/14, in just a little over three months, I have lost 35.4 pounds! I could not have done this without Aaron and Joe’s help. Their expertise, support, texts have given me confidence in my fitness future and confidence for a more positive, healthy life. Aaron works me hard and has a keen intuition on just how far to push me to allow me more success in my weight loss journey. Joe and Aaron apply their expertise, professionalism, caring, and support to create a perfect environment for success! I am so very grateful to have found them and am excited to see where this partnership takes me! Thank you Joe and Aaron!

My firsts and continuing impression of this trainer is that: Ty is a very open and apporachable person. As someone who has never had a private personal trainer before(previous experience in hot yoga and pilates with instructors and planet fitness trainers), I was a little intimidated by the barbell. I also had so many misconceptions about how it would make me appear muscular and bulky. But seeing how happy and encouraging my powerlifting friends were I decided to do it for mental health and my body dysmorphia . Ty works with me on all these concerns all while teaching me so much about how my body can progress most efficiently without excess exertion and burnout that crossfit or other aesthetic oriented programs may ask for. Be prepared to come out knowing so many weird tidbits about excercise physiology. He's really one of those people who try to understand what they are doing rather than give in to the generally accepted media about how to train. As a premed student, I receognize the only some of the things he talks about, like honestly, he knows more than me. And all backed by article and text citations. This is, as I know from my own experience as a student, is the only real way to be correct about what you are telling people. Having everything back up by that science! Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell will be the last thing you tell people next time you are asked about how things work. He emphasizes that looks aren't everything and gave me the non superficial confidence about body image I've always wanted. I could do the whole before after picture thing, but recently (I'm only about a month in) my friends have all already commented on my brighter mood and toned physique. I've measured myself out of boredom and realized I've actually lose waist circumference and gained hip. Thats for those of you who still like the little bit of aesthetics boost from fitness. Again, nothing compares to the surge of stamina you have for the week. Thanks so much for being so supportive and financially open with me ty. I wish you the best in your endeavors and, see you tuesday haha.
