Deck or Porch Repair

Our deck was 27 years old and was in desperate need of repairs. Patrick rebuilt about 40% of our deck but then also screwed in every other board on the deck. He also painted our deck and gazebo - not even batting an eye when we changed the paint color after the first deck coat. I would enthusiastically recommend Patrick as his quality of work and his communication are outstanding! He was able to keep costs down by flipping some of our old boards over and re-using them. He pays attention to details and obviously takes pride in his work. He checked in with us along the way to make sure we still liked the plan and the direction of the project. Our deck/gazebo looks like new! It is once again sturdy and looks fantastic. Professional, punctual, conscientious, and quality work - you honestly don't find these qualities in most contractors. Feel free to get our number from Patrick if you want to know more. -Doug and Kelley WatkinsSee more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you and so you can pay the best price.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Bob Croce was creative with the project I had in mind. He thought of solutions I never would have come up with. His idea of how to rebuild an outside trellis was artistic and matched another area of the yard. His plan to remove unneeded wooden crossbars on the porch which were peeling paint but couldn’t be reached because of existing screens was so helpful. He had other ideas of what to do with my screened-in porch. I was very happy with the work he did at my home.

Hiro and his team are amazing. Hiro is the most patient, friendly, and helpful contractor I have met. His communication skills are off the charts by always wanting to be sure he understands his customers’ needs and that he gets to the root of the problem. We had Hiro quote us a number of projects. He has been very respectful of being cautious with the pandemic, always wearing a face mask or video chatting to be safe. His team did terrific work replacing our front porch and also digging and resealing our drainage pipe from our downspout to the street. His team always wanted to do things right and they were willing to come back and touch up some spots of caulk and paint. With the porch we found that the foundation wall had a lot of cracks and voids so Hiro suggested for more money that we could caulk and create a moisture barrier to avoid basement issues. As you can see from the pictures, the before shows our attempt at trying to strip the porch and the after pictures show a much better structurally encores porch with beautiful craftsmanship. If you’re looking for someone with a lot of expertise and a willingness to be sure the costumer is pleased with the job then Hiro is your man!

Could not have asked for a better experience, start to finish. Toby was great. He gave me a quote over the phone and came out to confirm the quote in person. My porch was done (complete tear out and rebuild) in less than 6hrs and looks amazing! I’m looking to do additional projects with Toby and team. Definitely recommend!

Hiro and his team turned my front porch from old and boring to new and amazing! Previously I had 3 metal supports for the overhang and a single handrail. Now I have beautiful wood supports, rails with balusters, and double handrails! He also installed a new door system and trim. Hiro made sure that we were on the same page as far as materials and design. His crew was on time and was respectful of my time and home. I will definitely keep Hiro in mind for future home projects!

He came out quickly did an estimate. Scheduled immediately and completed the work in one day. I was pretty satisfied. Mike ripped out an old deck and put a small porch/deck in for me. I would have given 5 stars but I took off one point because after installing the new deck I there were 2 minor minor complaints that there was a little lip on one board that made the plank 1 cm higher so there was slight unevenness, the other thing was that the rail he put in had splinters so there were rough spots in places. He had no issue sanding that and repaired the lip with a power sander now the deck is smooth. My other issue was that I didn't know my deck wouldn't be stained and sealed. So for anyone who gets a quote make sure you know EVERYTHING that is included. That was my only disappointment in the end is that I still need to do that. I would use Mike again, I would just be very clear on communication so I know what will be included in the price.
