Gerico has done several projects for us in the past, and in each case he did an outstanding job at a great price - far exceeding our expectations. His first project was to remove and replace our kitchen ovens and cooktop. He went above and beyond when he found that the oven trim on the sides left an open area that required filling. He found wood trim that matched our cabinets perfectly and made it look like the oven was a perfect fit. He also found matching trim to replace our one combo oven with two separate ovens, requiring a 6" trim piece in between that would match our cabinets. He also had to redo the wiring to the box and he did so with minimal impact to our finished basement area below. We were very happy with this work. The second project involved a major upgrade of my dad's kitchen and a total redo of his bathroom. He did a great job at a price nobody could touch. Here he went out of his way to make a custom medicine cabinet when we could not find a replacement for our old outdated one. It looked fantastic and made the room more functional. He also reworked the cabinets in the kitchen to add extra space for a dishwasher and replace an old wall oven with a modern freestanding oven. This made the space more functional without the added cost of new cabinets! Gerico's latest project for us was installing travertine backsplash in our kitchen and replacing two ceiling cam lights with pendant lighting. He also replaced our old range hood. These changes made our kitchen and house more valuable and as always his prices were very reasonable. He also replaced the hardwood floor in our hall bath when the toilet seal worn away and caused the floor to rot around the rim of the toilet. Most of our first floor is hardwood and we were concerned that replacing the wood would look like a patch job. Gerico found hardwood that matched almost perfectly with the rest of our floor and we will probably be the only ones that will ever know they are different. Gerico goes out of their way to make sure every project is done right. We would recommend him without hesitation for any home project big or small.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How do you find a good carpenter?

Reviews for Lebanon decking professionals
L. B.
Chuck and his team - Robbie and Brad did an awesome job on my deck. The deck is unusually large and had some unique challenges. All challenges were met with meticulous detail and commitment to doing a high quality job. I will not hesitate to ask CPR back to assist me when I need further work on my deck. Chuck was very upfront with what needed to happen to prep the deck for an excellent job. The stain is beautiful. Question -- thru time constraints and weather, there was delay in the final touches to the deck, extending over at least a month past when I paid for the job. How many contractors would have failed to finish and not bothered to respond to me after being paid. Not Chuck! He was very reliable and committed to finishing the job. Job well done! I am so happy with my deck.
