Jill was our videographer for our wedding day. She captured everything we could have wanted, and her personality and overall warmth made her a joy to be around on our special day. Her editing and eye for detail are fantastic. Her turnaround was amazing, as we had a trailer within 2 days, and a full version edited wonderfully on a disk in our mailbox within 5 days. She is a joy to work with.

Mark is a truly fun person and professional photographer. We hired him at our wedding for wedding & engagement photography, videography, and a photobooth! He is extremely flexible and really wants to please the couple! He asked for my Pinterest board and took all of the photos that I was dying to have!!! Our engagement photos were taken & returned to us edited in a matter of hours-- and they are absolutely perfect!!! He asks for your input and doesn't force any photos you do not want. He is ready to go and gets to know you through questionnaires and conversions prior to meeting. Without him, my groom and I would not have thought of so many wonderful poses! The photobooth was the biggest hit! So many props, pictures for everyone, and they even made us a scrapbook of all of the photobooth pictures with guest comments! I LOVED Mark's services and highly recommend to everyone! We will definitely use him again in the future!!

Brandi and Jason just did both photography and videography for my wedding. They came out of their way to meet with us and were just really nice and attentive to what our needs would be. The day of the wedding they divided and conquered to get all of our still photography as well as the video but were very professional and unobtrusive. My entire bridal party liked them because they were fun and not pushy or demanding at all. I also really appreciated that they gave us a break on price by bundling the two services together because I have friends that paid a lot more and did not have as good an experience as we've had. I would definitely recommend them.

Tanya and Orlando did an incredible job taking my and my fiance's engagement photos. They took their time and paid close attention to every detail and ultimately produced some amazing photos. My family and friends won't stop raving about how beautiful the images are. Tanya and Orlando make a great team and were fantastic to work with. They really captured my fiance's and my vintage style and our love for each other. I know they will do an awesome job photographing our wedding as well!

Tommie did our daughter's June, 2014 wedding. He met with us prior to the wedding, attended the rehearsal and was very personably and easy to work with. We had 2 videographers for the wedding, as I wanted everything possible captured, and from different angles. All in all, we are happy with Tommie and his finished product. He was definitely on the less expensive side of things. There were some glitches, he had trouble with his machinery and our first BluRay was not good at all. He was aware of it and was working on fixing it, but we were having a viewing party so he sent the one out so we had something to view. He did get it fixed. He truly tried to make everything the way I wanted it. I was disappointed in the opening- I had asked for the string quartet to be taped while they played the 30 minutes of prelude music, while guests were being seated, and Tommie set up a camera on a tripod that was aimed at the entrance of our Sanctuary, there was a total of about 3 minutes of the actual quartet playing, which was specifically not what I had requested. I asked why the camera was just on a tripod when 2 videographers were present, he just said only one guy was taping. So that is my main complaint. If you want a state of the art, fantastic production on Blu Ray, you'll want to spend more. If you want something better than some relative can tape on their handheld videocam, Tommie will suffice. We were over all happy, he certainly did try post-wedding to make us happy, there were just some glitches.

Jake was friendly and accommodating for all our pre-production, and on-site filming needs. He was willing to adapt to any script changes, and was quick to suggest best practices to capture the best shots, and fit our narrative.

He was a wonderful person to work with! Our previous wedding videographer completely destroyed our footage and Michael took the time from the very first second I messaged him, to look through all the footage/files and offer his service and advice. He was extremely responsive and very generous with his time and listened to every request we had. I wish we had hired him from the get go for our wedding! I just didn't know such an awesome person was out there! HIGHLY recommend working with him!

Katie's work is gorgeous. I have gotten so many compliments from friends on my wedding video. She understands how to capture little moments and make them magical on video or in a still. She even came to the venue during the rehearsal to "set up her shots." I would recommend her to anyone!

I am very pleased to write this recommendation for Cincy Recruits. Cincy Recruits videographers videoed our son's wedding day and did an awesome job before, during and after the wedding. They came very professional looking and were very easy to work with. The video will surely be a treasured part of their lives, as a reminder of a lovely, happy, cold day in November. We know that behind the video there's the work of excellent professionals and a really pleasant team. All of our family and friends who have seen the video are very impressed with the high artistic quality of the video. They truly did a fantastic job! In closing, I would highly recommend Cincy Recruits for your special day or sporting event.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
