Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does computer repair cost?

The cost to fix your computer or laptop will depend on the extent of the repair and the labor rates in your area. For example, a repair service may charge $100 to fix virus or malware issues or $320 to fix a cracked or damaged screen. On average, computer repair technicians charge $60/hour for their services. However, hourly rates can range from $45-$90

Who can fix my computer?

If your computer needs repairs, hire a technician who has experience with your computer’s model and brand. Ideally, the pro you choose should have certifications, training and/or a degree in a related field.

Look for top-rated, qualified computer repair services in your area on Thumbtack.

Is it worth fixing a computer?

It depends. If the damage is severe, you might be better off buying a new computer than spending hundreds (or thousands) of dollars on repairs. Always get price quotes from a few computer repair services near you, and compare those estimates to desktop and laptop prices. If it's cheaper to fix your computer,  consider doing so. But if it's cheaper to buy a new device, that's probably your best option.

Should I repair or replace my computer?

To determine if you should replace or repair your computer, consider the following:

  • Has your warranty expired?
  • Is your computer old and out of date?
  • Is the cost to fix your computer 50% or more of the cost of replacing it?
  • Before it broke, was your computer working slowly and inefficiently?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to replace your computer. When in doubt, consult a technician for their expert opinion.

What should I do before sending a computer in for repairs?

Before you send your computer to a technician to fix it, take the following precautions:

  • Make sure you hire a reputable, top-rated professional to handle the repairs. Look at past photos of work they’ve completed and read their customer reviews on Thumbtack.
  • Back-up your data. To ensure you don’t lose the data on your computer, back-up your files to an external hard drive.
  • Ensure you have access to important information. If you need to access certain files or information from your computer, make sure you can access that information through a cloud storage system or external drive.
  • Erase sensitive information. If you have files (documents, photos, etc.) that contain sensitive information about your finances, accounts, passwords, etc., delete them before you bring your computer to a repair shop.
  • Log out of your accounts. Make sure you’re logged out of your bank, social media and other accounts.

Is it cheaper to replace a hard drive or buy a new computer?

Buying a new hard drive is almost always cheaper than buying a new computer. If you suspect you need to upgrade or replace your hard drive, ask a computer technician to diagnose your device (and request a cost estimate if the culprit is indeed the hard drive).

How many years does a laptop last?

Depending on its quality, age, condition and maintenance, a laptop may last only a few years or up to seven years. Of course, your laptop may last longer or shorter depending on how well you take care of it. If you think your laptop needs repairs, don’t procrastinate — hire a technician to look at it before the damage becomes irreparable.

Is it worth replacing the motherboard on a laptop?

If your laptop’s motherboard was damaged by physical impact, liquid, heat or electrical damage, you may need to replace it or buy a new computer. You should consult computer repair experts near you to determine if replacing your laptop’s motherboard is worth the cost. Compare the price quotes you receive with new laptop prices, and decide which option is the most cost-effective.

Cindy R.
Computer repair and backup system implemented in less than 24 hours and was less expensive than Office Depot who recently "repaired" the computer. Ron is professional, prompt, and genuine. I can't say enough great things about him or the service we received.

Ron was amazing. He went above and beyond to help me with my computer issue. Even though there were many unforeseen issues and new problems pop up, he was able to problem solve it and get my computer working again. Plus he is friendly! I will definitely recommend him for your computer repair needs!

I spilled red wine in my laptop keyboard during a Skype call on Father's day. The computer screen went dark and the there were no further signs of life for the next 24 hours. I searched for help on the Internet. Most sites left me discouraged about recovering the use of my laptop. After a search for computer repair people in my area, I found Ron through Thumbtack.Ron responded within a few hours to my request for help and picked up my laptop soon thereafter. He wasn't optimistic either about the prospects. But within the same day he called me and told me that not only was the data on my computer recoverable, he was able to bring the computer back to full life.On the same day he returned it to me, and so far it is just a s good as it was before the wine entered the keyboard. He must have a magic wand, and I suppose his computer repair experience helped too, His charge for the miracle fix was modest. What a guy!--FM, Beaverton

I submitted a request to have a no-POST issue diagnosed for resolution. Ron immediately responded with a bid that included free diagnosis. He drove out to pick up the computer, asked pertinent questions and came back with results in a timely manner. He didn’t charge me to tell me that I had a dead motherboard on my hands. Having done computer repairs in the past but lacking the tools to properly diagnose this issue, I was very pleased to see how this was handled and will take my business to Ron again.

What a delightful experience! Ron took what was a very negative experience with Dell to the best computer repair experience ever! His kind and witty demeanor coupled with obvious expertise made my problem disappear! He picked up the same day I called and delivered my laptop back to me the following morning. Amazing customer service! Thank you 😊

Steve showed up on time and diagnosed the problems with my computer very quickly. He came well prepared to do battle with the Beast that my computer had become. He explained just what he was fixing (although much of it went over my head). Steve was the consummate professional and it wasn't too long that I had the "Smoking Fast" computer I originally bought back again. I would unequivocally recommend Steve's PC Repair service to anyone and everyone who has PC problems..... You will be thanking Steve for a wonderful job and be thrilled with the cost compared to other services..... I'm guessing that when someone knows exactly what they're doing , it doesn't take as long to fix things. This equates to lower cost and much better value for Steve Karm's customers ............. Top notch first class service. Ron had a good idea what the problem was based on my description but said that he would need to take it apart before he could confirm. He picked up from my home, took it apart and got back to me right away with the was worse than I thought but he was able to use parts from my other disabled laptop and put them together as well as modify where the connector connects to the mother board so problem will not happen again. He communicated all the details to me, completed the repairs and delivered it to me at work, less than 48 hours and price went up minimally based on the extra scope needed. Very satisfied with the professional service and can do attitude. I highly recommend Ron and will definitely use him if I ever have a computer repair again. Free, prompt pickup and delivery to fit my schedule and great work. This is your go to guy.
