I've been taking piano lessons with Kris for about 3 months now and it's been great! He really knows how to tailor the lessons to my individual needs and he isn't afraid of challenging me. The lessons are dynamic because he mixes sheet music with theory, exercises, scales, and improvisation. His lessons are very reasonably priced and he's always reachable by phone and email. He is also flexible in scheduling if you need to make any changes on any given week.

Max is an excellent teacher. He is patient and supportive and is able to tailor my guitar lessons to my interests. I had almost no experience with guitar, but I think I have progressed a lot in a short time with his help. I also really appreciate that he is able to come out to St. Johns for my lessons. If you are an adult looking for guitar lessons, I definitely recommend Max.

As an adult looking for beginner lessons I was a bit nervous at first but I'm very happy that I found Shannon. He is easy to work with and keeps my lessons interesting so that I'm continuously progressing. He's very versatile in his style and I believe I'm learning more from him because he is a working professional musician. If you are looking for piano lessons I highly recommend checking him out!

I started taking his piano lessons only about a month ago, but it''s been such a great joy to work with him. He constantly assesses my weaknesses and strengths, and plans my lessons accordingly. He also listens carefully to what I like and what I want to do, too. I live a bit far from his studio, but it's totally worth it. I highly recommend him!

From the get-go Deanna's been a great piano teacher to our 5 year old and each week he races through the door to begin the lessons. It's only been a few months but we can sense his growing understanding of how the piano works. Anyone who helps my kid (or anyone's kid) learn to play and love music gets 5 stars.

When we arrived for the initial consultation for singing lessons and my daughter saw the piano, she asked if she could take piano lessons first. So, we're now taking piano lessons from Bonnie. I find her to work very well with kids, my daughter is 8, and my daughter likes her and is happy too. She explains things clearly, gives praise when earned, and is helpful and pleasant to work with.

Do yourself a favor!!! I have only great things to say! I had never once sung in front of anyone. Not sober at least. Ha. But I recently have decided to get out of my comfort zone as much as possible. And try the things that have intrigued me. Singing was at the top of list. Our lessons are efficient and professional. With a realistic human touch to expectations and performance. If I am ever uncomfortable and she senses it, which she has a knack for, she calms me and shows me the proper techniques to overcome my insecurities. With a focus on technique and fundamentals I can’t wait to progress and find the voice I’ve always had but never had the proper to teacher to dig deep with me.

I took cello lessons with Elisa for a few years and played in a group of student, stringed musicians led by her for a few more. She is very good at what she does. She is also very kind. Her lessons are affordable (especially important for a broke college student like me), and her schedule flexible for the most part.

I have been taking piano lessons from Anna Fisher for about a year now and have progressed faster than I ever thought possible. I'm an adult returning student and truly value her teaching style. She's patient and kind, and she can answer any question I come up with. Anna is very knowledgeable and offers her students a well-rounded musical experience. Not only does she help me with my piano playing, she also is training me in music theory. I look forward to my lessons every week and leave inspired and encouraged to keep practicing and learning. Anna is truly an artist, and I would highly recommend her to others.

Liz is the kind of teacher I yearned for when I was taking music lessons as a child. She makes it possible to succeed by her encouragement, high expectations and the fact that she breaks each task down into manageable pieces. My 9 year-old daughter has been taking lessons from Liz for almost 5 years. During that time, she has grown so much in her love of music, her poise in performing and in her work ethic. My almost 7 year-old son has been taking lessons for 2 years. He is a bouncy, energetic boy and it took him a while to learn to pay attention to detail. Now he is so proud of himself that he can memorize music carefully and not have to correct mistakes later. My husband and I chose the Suzuki method because it trains the musical ear and focuses on developing good technique. We chose Liz because we knew several of her students and has seen their fabulous growth. We also really like the Group lessons (which many other teachers do not offer). They provide a chance to become comfortable with performing and the games make learning theory fun. Group also helps the families at Studio 88 be a chose-knit group. The students become friends and encourage each other. If you choose Liz as your piano teacher, she will expect you to practice with your child on a daily basis. She will give you a list of tasks to complete during the week. She will expect you to take notes during lessons. Her lessons continue year-round (with breaks for the major holidays). If you want to drop your child off at lessons and let your child practice by him/her self, then you should look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you are looking for the highest quality piano teacher who is willing to work extremely hard to turn your child into a topnotch musician, Liz is the teacher for you.

Anya is an amazing teacher. She has great stories and multiple ways of explaining things. She creates a great learning environment for learning and has helped increased my confidence (which is why I wanted voice lessons). She has also successfully convinced me that I am actually a soprano and can hit notes I would have never thought possible. I always look forward to our lessons and working with her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
