Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you and so you can pay the best price.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Jon completed our 11x10 deck with Trex and he did an excellent job. He was thoroughly professional in all his dealings with us and explained the build process to us as well. I would highly recommend Jon and BuildLife Outdoors LLC to anyone who is looking to build a deck. The deck looks great especially with the recessed lighting which Jon installed for us as well.

We got a deck built from scratch on our new backyard and Jon from build life outdoors did an exceptional job! I was very impressed after the project was completed to see the quality and finish of the overall project. He also installed the lights we ordered from amazon into the deck. We made some changes when he was half way through and he was very flexible and helped us to make this project look the best! Jon is very professional, punctual and extremely knowledgable about the basics of building a new deck! I would highly recommend him for your house project!

We hired All Backyard Construction to install a 25'x13' stamped patio to replace our ground level deck that was dry rotted, and also to build a 10'x13' porch cover. The porch cover turned out beautiful, but the patio left much to be desired. Communication was a bit of an issue. Travis was great in letting us know what was going on, but only if we reached out as asked. Otherwise we often felt in the dark about the timing or delays. As our project dragged on, we felt the communication deteriorated. Ultimately, the stamping on the patio was not done well. As we learned, you really get one shot to get it right. The stamped lines are crooked in places, and we had several areas that they missed stamping, so that when it dried those sections were 1/2" higher than the rest, and a tripping hazard. ABC tried to fix it by grinding it down, but that made the gravel in the concrete show. So then they tried to paint/color it, and that made it far worse of an eyesore. We now have three sections in our patio that very obviously do not match the rest of the space in coloring. The edges of many of the stamps have rough edges that don't feel great on your feet, and the tops are not smooth. We discussed our disappointment with ABC, but were told that since the mistakes were not 'below industry standards', it wasn't bad enough that it would warrant tearing out to re-pour. In the end, we bought an outdoor rug to cover the worst discolored area, are using the patio daily. It's a good space overall, and it's better than the dry-rotting deck we had before, but the quality was not what we paid for and were expecting. I read extensive reviews about ABC on this site and others prior to hiring them, so this was definitely a disappointment. They did do a great job on the porch cover, and as a whole the patio is functional, but for the money we paid for the patio and how it turned out, I would not recommend their services to friends or family.
