I am an interior designer and organizer specializing in people who are going through major life transitions like divorce, empty nesters and grieving the loss of a loved one. I support the emotional transition as much as the physical transformation. I have found that the reality of big transitions in our lives is that they involve both internal and external work so I have developed this company to give emotional support through these transitions as well as providing logistical and structural support to get the work done, to take practical steps towards the desired changes as well as be available to listen to the clients concerns or challenges that are making moving forward hard for them. I'm happy to be there to listen as well as take loads of things to be donated, help sort through things or decide what new elements need to be brought into the home. I truly believe that as we declutter our spaces we clear our minds, so I think talking about whatever comes up for my clients as we work is part of the process as much as any logistical steps we take. I have been in the interior design world for many years, remodeling and decorating multiple spaces over the last twenty years, as well as working in the health and wellness industry. I grew up in a buddhist monastery and taught yoga and meditation for years all around the world when I was younger. I have worked as an upholsterer and interior designer for the last four years and my formal education is in fine art. I love design of all kinds! But what I truly believe is the most helpful for my clients is for me to practice deep listening, to really give my full attention to helping them by reflecting back to them what it is they want from their spaces and what are the blocks coming up for them to achieving those goals and coming up with steps to overcome those blocks. I'm here to support YOU on your nesting journey!See more

Claire Chancey says, "ZGF Architects hired Refinement to stage various spaces for an architectural photography shoot of a 58,000 SF mixed-use building in downtown Portland. The scope of work included staging furniture and styling for an entry way vestibule, reception area, co-working space and library room, a smaller workstation vignette, and a large corner kitchen and dining area. Working with Refinement and her team was a great experience, they were professional and skilled and went above and beyond to provide a quality final product. From procuring large-scale and quality furniture items on short notice, to the care and attention she provided with regard to the design details, everything was excellent. She worked within the design constraints of repurposing existing furniture and budget while also managing her own crew on a very tight installation and clean up timeline. We would work with her team in the future for architectural staging needs and I'd recommend her services to others."See more

Frank J. says, "I’ve worked with Mikalan and her team for many years. I’ve hired her for a wide range of projects because She has a diverse skill set which comes in handy when you need someone that can think outside of the box and is resourceful. She has great vision and has saved me money with her innovative approach. From construction demolition to final clean-up, from designing house plans to staging a model home. She uses her Feng Shui background to make it all come together. From packing & moving my parents, she has cleaned and organized my home and still found time to take a beautiful family portrait that hangs above my mantle to this day. She is a top notch professional and one I highly recommend. Frank Johnson"See more

Carolyn T. says, "Miranda is an absolute powerhouse of a designer! She’s attentive, has incredible taste, is FUN to work with and goes way above and beyond her requirements to deliver a next-level project. A total “can do” attitude and won’t stop until the job is done. As in - she’ll spend days searching for your perfect paint color and delivering samples until you’re happy. Her help was invaluable for the full remodel and redesign of our home — and she has the best local connections for contractors, suppliers, retailers and more (something I could never have gotten on my own). The best part of working with Miranda was her ability to push us out of our comfort zone to ensure we had a truly unique design - something fully worth every penny we spent. Don’t hesitate on this one!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.
