This is a mixed review. Mostly good. I'll tell you what I'm unhappy about and then what I liked. I'm very unhappy that they trimmed up the branches of an evergreen tree along side the house. Once trimmed evergreens will never grow back lower branches. My neighbor and I discussed that tree a number of times since it was over hanging their front yard. They liked it and told me to leave it that way. It didn't even enter my mind that they would prune it up, we never discussed it ahead of time- one way or the other. I wish they had called me first. They would have saved themselves a lot of work and yard debris removal because I would have told them most empathically to leave it alone. The other thing I'm unhappy about is that they cut my ornamental grasses in the back yard down to about 3 inches tall. I do that in the winter so they'll come up well in spring. But these were healthy and attractive and there was no reason to hack them down in the middle of summer. They also removed the ground cover under one of my trees.. Why? I have no idea because it looked nice. I hope it will come back. What I did like was that they showed up when they said they'd be there. They worked very hard. They did a lot of work in a very short period of time because I was under a short deadline and they came through for me. I liked that they put down the dark brown hemlock bark dust as requested and spread it well. I liked how they got rid of all the weeds and pruned up the other trees. They did a great job pruning the boxwood hedge. It looks nicer than it ever has. They put in new sod that is a terrific improvement and gave me good advice about watering it. They programmed my watering system for me, which was a real bonus. He also gave me good advice on how to make the edge of the sod look better in one awkward area, which he did and sure enough it looks good. They finished on time and on budget. The yard looks great! And they cleaned up after themselves. I would recommend them to others, just make sure every detail of what you want done or not done is nailed down before they start.

My sister hired Glenn to do a trim job in our downstairs bathroom. When he came to the house to check out the scope of work, she was delighted with his knowledge of trim for bathrooms (the material my sister bought was not appropriate for a residential bathroom), and he showed her (on his phone) what was out there and available for trim. The trim he suggested and installed was a HUGE difference in what we thought it would look like. My sister was totally delighted. He also fixed another decade-long problem she had in the kitchen. It was always a hassle for US to try and fix, but he took care of it like the professional he is. Due to this man’s knowledge, skill and professionalism, we have suggested to others that he be hired for jobs that they need done. His honesty was also a refreshing change to come across. If you want it done and want it done right, you need to hire Glenn Burke!

I would say 4.5 stars. My lawn was small, out of shape, and needed a lot of trimming. Stacey went above what he bid for. He saw I needed some weeding and did so without asking for more money.

The job was to trim a huge laurel hedge about 40 feet long, remove a bush, and take down a small volunteer tree. John arrived when he said he would, did a great job, left the yard clean, and discussed a long term plan for the hedge. His bid was very good and included a price to trim the hedge again next year. I've already signed him up for next year.

We hired Anderson Landscape to do a bundle of projects at our house: power-washing, trimming of a big laurel hedge, and trimming some dead wood out of a big tree. They did a great job with all aspects and started and finished exactly as planned. Also, the team was very professional and communicative as they confirmed the details of the job. I would hire them again for sure.

Walt at Inside Out was very responsive in getting in touch with me related to the job of clipping/cutting down our 30 foot laurel hedges. Inside Out crew worked all day until the job was done. The end result being an amazing laurel hedge, that is no longer taking over the house.

Jose did an awesome job for me! I have a large residential property that needed quite a bit of TLC. He pruned a massive rhodedendron hedge, several large shrubs, mowed and edged the grass, weed whacked a large section of the property, which included some very stickery blackberry canes, all in much less than a day! He was punctual, gave an affordable job quote, efficient, and friendly. I will be calling him for my future yard maintenance needs.

John and Shay did a fantastic job pruning three huge laurel hedges and limbing three trees. John gave me advice on how to help some of our sad arbor vita. He was easy to communicate with, and everything went exactly as planned. They cleaned up thoroughly. The price was affordable and I'll be hiring them to do some more work around our property.

I own rental properties in PDX and have used a number of tree trimming services over the years. Green Scape Landscaping is the best and most responsive company I have used to date. The owner, Ed Harris, is very detail oriented and is very concerned that he listens to what the customer wants, and gives the customer satisfaction. He is knowledgeable and will offer professional advice when warranted, but will defer to your wishes so long as you understand what it is you are asking for. Ed remains in communication with you throughout the process. He follows up, also. His crew is fast, thorough, cheerful, and prompt. They are careful to be non-disruptive (especially important to me because of tenants). I will use them again and I recommend them to anyone who needs tree service. I would further infer that their other services (scheduled maintenance, etc.) are equally professional.

Josiah Vick and his crew were awesome. They trimmed up some very tall cedars, cleaned up all the debris. Josiah is the certified arborist, and as he was trimming this one cedar he informed us that the cedar was split and rotten. His recommendation was to take the tree down before it fell upon our motor home. He fell the tree, cut it up and cleaned up all the debris again. I felt his price for all the trimming and falling a tree were fair. I definately will be calling him again for any tree issues we have.

I hired Diego to help trim a gigantic elm tree in my back yard. He was able to schedule me in within the week, offered the most cost effective bid, got the job done in a few hours, and went beyond my expectations as far as quality of work. The tree looks so great and I no longer feel like my backyard is a hazard zone for falling branches! Overall, Diego was really great to work with and I plan to hire him again for future tree maintenance. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
