Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

Our fireplace didn’t work so we called an electrician to see if it was an electrical issue. The owner Ralph mentioned there was a $175 inspection fee which I agreed to. Once the electrician come he said it wasn’t an electrical issue and indeed was a bad ignitor so he would order the part. The owner and him were on the phone and the electrician explained the situation. I overheard the owner repeatedly make sure he received my $175. Fast forward two months and the electrician gave me a very long explanation of why he hasn’t received the part. We hired a fireplace expert and he finished the day he came for inspection. He also didn’t charge me an inspection fee. If you guys were honest from the getgo, we could’ve actually enjoyed our fireplace the entire winter. Be honest.

We needed to change the location of 2 kitchen pendant lights and add one more at the kitchen island. We looked in Thumbtack and found Jack and very happy with our decision to choose him as electrician. He came over on time, did all the works as we asked, answered all questions we have and with very reasonable price. I highly recommend him if you need an electrician.

I found my new electrician! We had an outlet that was getting warm so I needed it replaced. Jose ended up spending additional time on the outlet because he discovered some moisture in the area but still only charged me what he quoted. He is very knowledgeable and professional. This is the first time I tipped an electrician! I just felt he deserved it. I will be recommending Jose to all my friends!

We're a restaurant in Portland that needed our mixer hard wired. The electrician consolidated our panel, added 240, and ran conduit. Unfortunately, being a 3 phase mixer, it was wired up single phase and could have burned up our machine if we didn't check. The machine and manual stated 240/3 phase, yet it wasn't wired that way. Our building was single phase, but because we told him that it had previously been tested, he went ahead and wired it up that way assuming that whomever tested it didn't have three (which is beyond me, but whatever). After having my husband (a WA state licensed electrician) do OUR OWN TROUBLESHOOTING, we purchased a variable frequency drive to convert the single phase power to 3 phase. We researched and drove an hour to purchase the part. After lots of discussion, attitude from the electrician, emotional personal issues used as excuses, we finally got him to come out again in order to attempt to fix the job. Ralph was very apologetic on the behalf of his electrician, and offered money back and/or another job without cost. We asked them to fix a dropped neutral in an outlet, but it couldn't be figured out. We also didn't receive any money back. After this nightmare, I made sure to have my husband present since now my trust was lost. He had to actually tell the electrician (THAT WE HIRED) how to wire up the device. Once wired, they LEFT IT TO US to program and wire up the controls. After days of troubleshooting and spending a total of 4 hours on the phone with the VFD manufacturer, we ONCE AGAIN, discovered that the machine itself....was wired wrong..... Except this time, the three input wires to the machine weren't even terminated, and just left laying loose. So, in summary, after weeks of this mixer drama, we now have a working mixer. But no thanks to the electrician. After a ton of research, learning to program, finding wiring issues, contacting hobart, asking another electrician for help, trying to simultaneously open a restaurant, AND STILL PAYING A HUGE BILL, we have a mixer. I can't even tell you how exhausted I have become with this process. A nightmare is truly now an understatement. Communication was great up until the last bit when I discovered the non-terminated wires. I have tried for over a week to get some kind of compensation for this disaster, but alas, I haven't heard a word.

Deonn did a wonderful job. I would definitely recommend. He was great at communicating when trying to set up a time that worked. Was on time and was even able to help me solve another electrical problem that was not part of original scope. Great quality work. Will be my go to electrician.

Tim's Team is excellent. We needed an outlet installed in our bathroom and a timer added to our outdoor lights. Oleg, one of Tim's electricians, was extremely professional, on time, and did both projects very well. We will definitely be hiring from Tim's team anytime we have an electrical project.

We like to have a bidet toilet seat installed in our bathroom, but there is no electrical outlet near the toilet. After checking out all electricians and their works review on Thumbtack, we'd decided to call Roman, and we weren't disappointed at all. Roman did a fantastic job to add the outlet with the time manner and with the reasonable price. Highly recommended.

It took a little longer than I like to get a response to my thumbtack quote but the work and value were worth the wait. When Oleg came out I added a task to the job which increased the estimate. It was still a good price. Electricians are not cheap. I am pleased with Oleg and have hired him again since the first job.

Roman was excellent. I contacted 3 electricians and he was the only one courteous enough to reply. I told him I had an emergency, and he came the same day, completed all the work I needed to my satisfaction, and charged a very fair price. I would highly recommend him to anybody needing electrical work.

Max was super professional, knowledgeable, easy to work with, answered all the questions we had patiently & in language we could understand and charged (what we felt was) a very fair rate. He made it look easy while we had been left in the dark (literally) by the previous electrician. Also, he felt safe in our home and was a nice person.

Stan did great work installing a new bathroom fan for us when our old one broke. He was available in a matter of days and his quote was hundreds of dollars less than any of the electricians I contacted on Yelp. Installation was quick, and he even got us a deal on a much better fan. Would definitely go with On Point Electric for future projects!
