John and his crew were outstanding! We had several bids for our fence and John came out and spent almost an hour explaining, educating, and making us feel comfortable about the process and quality of his work. He showed genuine interest in helping asess our needs. His crew was professional and communicated anytime they had questions about how we wanted things done. The quality of work is exceptional and we couldn't be happier. It is by far one of the most beautiful fences I've seen and will probably outlive even me! John even came out a few months later to fine tune the gate after the wood cured and expanded. Great work for a great price. We couldn't be happier and will always refer John to everyone we know.

Daniel Ciobanu provided an excellent finished product for our backyard fence. It turned out much better than we could imagine. The craftmanship was far above what we expected. He communicated well at all times, was prompt in meeting construction schedules, reliable, and provided an excellent and very reasonable cost. We would recommend Daniel highly because of his work quality, professionalism, responsiveness, value, and punctuality. 5 stars are earned.

I put out a request for fences and I got 3 responses from Thumbtack. When I asked for a bid, two of the respondents never responded back. Cedar Fence & Decks was on top of it. They showed up for the bid when they said they would and provided a competitive bid. After winning the bid, they started on-time and finished on-time. They removed the debris of the old fence. The work and materials were of great quality. Richard was easy to work with and knowledgeable in his trade. I would recommend and use Cedar Fence & Decks again.

Daniel made 2 fences for my family, a short 3 footer for the front yard and big one for the back yard. My favorite is the gate with lock pad he constructed for the entry to the back yard. I feel my yard is now more secure for our little ones. He also trimmed our trees and bushes, planted some bushes and flowers, including cleaned up our property of yard debris and cut down a very tall Douglas that had to be removed. Thank you Dany for your quick and wonderful work, for your attention to detail, and for your great customer service. My kids loved him too, which made me feel at ease as he worked around them. Now we have a yard I can brag about. We will be hiring you again for future jobs! Thank you!

Our 1928 home project was particularly demanding and required extra work to strip molding and make repairs. Damas Painting exceeded our expectation. Fernando was extremely communicative, the team worked diligently throughout the project, cleaned up every day, and addressed any concern we had. Fernando was available to be on the job to troubleshoot and was responsive to our needs. Damas Painting comes with our highest recommendation. Our home looks so beautiful because of their attention to detail. We recommended them whole heartedly.

I had 2 sections of fence removed and replaced. Lloyd was very easy to work with and flexible especially since we had to coordinate with 2 of my neighbors. He crafted beautiful fences that blend right in with all the older fences around them. I will definitely call him back for any future fencing needs or other general handyman work.

We bought a new home recently and had quite a bit of work needed on our yard, roof, driveway and wood fences. The previous owner had let everything go! Weeds were all over the place! The flower beds were terrible. You could see the years of moss growth on the roof from the street. The driveway had so much moss and grime we would slip getting out of the car. Our fences were more grey then brown. All Seasons Home & Yard Care got rid of all the weeds and freshened up all the flower beds with fresh bark dust. They power washed all the moss from the rood and driveway and even treated them to prevent future growth! My driveway is actually white now! I was expecting it to be black! They power washed our grey fences and re-stained them. They treated the fence as well to keep them from turning grey again!

Drew did an excellent, and fast, job of removing 110' of old fence helplessly tangled in thick ivy - clearing the way for a beautiful and modern picture frame fence. A consummate pro, working with Drew was a top notch experience. A solid recommendation.

We met with several people about staining our fence, and were very impressed with Duane. He was one of the few people who came out prepared with a measuring wheel to measure the fence himself, he had his license number on the quote, and he seemed to really know what he was talking about. We were so impressed with Duane that we asked him to come out and stain our front porch as well. He seems to have knowledge well beyond painting, so I intend to keep his information on hand. I feel confident that when he agrees to take on a project he won't settle for anything less than doing a phenomenal job.

I wanted to surprise my niece with a new fence while she was away visiting her mother. A young newlywed on a tight budget, their new home came with a fence that allowed her pups to escape. Jesus responded quickly, bid a fair price and started/completed the project in a timely fashion. We are all pleased with his work and would definitely use him again. Don’t hesitate to call Jesus for your fencing needs!

Mario did a great job installing and staining our new fence! He was easy to communicate with and quoted a very fair and competitive price for the job. In the busy summer, he was able to install the fence within a week which was great! I couldn't get other contractors to even get me a bid within a week. With Mario, he bid the day after we initially spoke and completed the job within a week. We are very happy with our fence and will call Mario first the next time we need similar work done

Mike was the first to respond to a Thumbtack site post and explained that while his business is yard work, he's expanding into fences and decks. He visited to take a look at the work and measure before providing an estimate, which was about the same as an earlier amount I'd received. He's been terrific in communicating throughout. I knew I wanted the entire, decrepit fence replaced but didn't have a grasp of all the details that entailed. Mike made sure to talk through the process and various issues with me, making sure I approved or incorporated my changes. He explained flexibility on post spacing helped - instead of gunning for even spacing, I was fine with offsets from the existing bases so it saved effort to just cut the old ones at ground line. Like any battle plan, there were surprises that led to changes but Mike checked with me as we went along and made sure I was comfortable with what his crew did. The only detail I wasn't completely satisfied with was more my fault for not being clear, on the post foundation concrete top level. But I got the fence I wanted with a contractor who was wonderful to interact with - Mike and his crew did a great deal of work in a short amount of time. And the fence looks great!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
