3rd party HVAC company came out for service. SBPH does not actually provide the service. I was quoted $79 for a diagnostic. After 1.5 hours, problem not solved but bad control board suspected. I was charged $150. Turns out $79 is for first 30 minutes only. I was not informed of this. I was supposed to get a call about a quote for board which never came. All in all I had to call Oliver Heating and cooling. More expensive, but upfront, and fixed problem two days later.

I can not say enough good things about my experience with Sam. I chose him off thumbtack almost randomly because of his response time and communication. He responded and showed up the next morning and worked very hard to fix an unusual HVAC problem. He diagnosed it and fixed it that day. I was so impressed with his quality of work and price that i immediately texted my family and friends to let them know I have an hvac company now I would recommend over anyone I've hired. I am sure I will call Sam again. 110% recommended!

Set the bar for service level. We are so happy we found Marion and his crew to help us with our HVAC cleaning. So courteous it was confusing. He called to explain his estimate. He answered all of our questions. Then called day before appointment to confirm. Then called on way to my home. Then took shoes off when arrived. Then explained what they were going to do. Did it. Then cleaned up. Then charged us what he said he would charge. And the work was fantastic. Very good people. Thank you!!!

I called Subzero Cooling because I was having problems with my HVAC system working properly with my Nest. I've had other companies in to look at it and they spent hours rewiring and then ultimately left with the recommendation that I should switch thermostats as they had no experience with Nest (and even wired it wrong as they fiddled). After doing a fair amount of research and running my own wires, I called Benny and explained the problem. He was able to come out the next morning and had it up and running in 35 minutes, talking me through it as he went. I'm very satisfied with the level of service I recieved.

Very straightforward. My experience with other service tech's usually involves dawdling, and some tinkering to figure out the problem. Home HVAC showed up on time, went right to work, diagnosed and solved the issue within 20 minutes. Granted, it was an easy fix, but the level of professionalism was still high. Would recommend, and will be calling again, should I need service.

I hired Mike to service two A/C units. He showed up for both appointments on the time we scheduled. One of the units needed parts ordered. He gave me a reasonable quote and a estimated time for the repair. The repair was done on the date that he estimated. His work was neat and clean. Both units are working great! Yes I would call his company for all my HVAC needs.

Greg did an excellent job with our ducts and gave us a very fair price in doing so. I would recommend him to anyone in the market for a duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, or any HVAC cleaning/maintenance. I will definitely be keeping his number handy for future vent and dryer cleanings. Thanks, Greg!

Adams HVAC was the fifth contact I made to get an estimate. I had gone on the web to get information about a central air system in my house. In doing my homework I came across Johnathan and he was totally professional when he came to my house to give me the initial estimate. Johnathan was totally on time, punctual when the work was started during the same week. The quality of the work supports the value of the money spent. He even came back the next week to check and see if the unit was operating properly and cleaned up some of the wires that he determined need to be encased. Would use this company for future projects. FABULOUS!!!!!

Integrity residential has done several jobs for me over the course of 2 years, including helping with rehab of rental properties, and installing heating systems. Tyquan is very knowledgeable regarding the most efficient and economical way to get the most out of heating/AC and other repairs. He is timely and responsive, while being very competitive in terms of cost. He stands by his work and knows the city codes inside out. I would highly recommend him for both residential HVAC and property maintenance.

I recently needed to have a new steam boiler installed. I used the Thumbtack website and was given a list of companies to get estimates from. I had 4 representatives come to give quotes. I was most impressed with Energy-Star Services approach to pricing. No nonsense: two models offered for my heating needs. The quote was very reasonable with great financing, and the HVAC manager, Josh, explained all of the technicalities in very understandable terms. He immediately inspired confidence in me. When my old boiler had started to fail, it was already beginning to get cold outside. Josh understood the urgency of scheduling and was able to put my job on his schedule for the exact day that I wanted, a few days after our meeting. He gave me a very reasonable quote for a third-party to take out my old large furnace which I wanted to get rid of. On the day of the installation, four men with three trucks arrived and set to work. They basically completed the job in two days and did beautiful work. The installers,Rob and Josh, were very hard workers and good problem solvers. Getting the new boiler into my old basement was a huge task. It actually involved having to take the new boiler partially apart. There was absolutely no complaining or balking about this setback. Whenever I was concerned, I would call Manager Josh and he would always put me at my ease and explain what was going on. He was extraordinarily responsive, always answering the call immediately. Where can one find customer service like that these days? After all was said and done the men cleaned up the basement up beautifully! I would recommend Energy-Star services to anyone. You will be in good hands. What a great company!! Margaret Hager Sent from my iPhone

We recently moved into an older house and it suddenly became apparent that the oil furnace had not been serviced in a long time. It woke us up on a weekend morning blowing soot and fumes...the white cats had turned gray! George arrived quickly, within just a few hours of our putting in a Thumbtack request, and solved a really nasty, dirty problem! He is extremely professional, pleasant, and gave lots of good advice on how to care for the furnace in the future. He was upfront about the costs, and there were no surprises. I will call him the next time we need service.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

    • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
    • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
    • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
    • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
      • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
    • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
      • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
    • Your home has humidity problems.
    • Your home has excessive dust.
      • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
    • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
      • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
    • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
      • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
