Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

I had a leak in my roof and Donald was very responsive in getting the roof repaired. He also put a sealant on my entire roof to ensure it will be sound for the winter. Due to the cold weather the sealant flaked a bit overnight, but Donald came back right away to put another layer on and made sure it dried properly / followed up with us to ensure everything looked good.

Donald was very professional. I told him my situation with my roof and he listened. He went up on the roof and told me what I needed done. It appeared that he was looking out for my best interest. It poured down rain yesterday and no leaks at all! and he fixed the outside of my sky light. I would recommend expert roofing to others. I like the 5 year warranty too!

Just had Dave out to look at my roof and give me an estimate. He was extremely easy to communicate with, professional and upfront about everything. He was able to show me pictures of my roof and even insisted on seeing the inside damage caused by the roof leak. I liked that he didn’t try to sugar coat anything and he seemed extremely thorough. Just from talking to Dave, I get the feeling that there are no cut corners involved in his work.

Bill was incredibly responsive, friendly, and answered all my questions. His team showed up on time and despite some rain preventing work on the roof that morning, came back that same afternoon and completed work on schedule. Fixed my roof at a fair cost and was very easy to work with!

I had a simple job to be done, replacing rather repositioning the flashing on my roof. He even tacked down the roof in areas that perhaps might have been ignored. I didn't have to point that out to them calmer they simply did it on their own. I am very pleased.

I needed some general maintenance to the main portion of the roof and requested to have some additional items addressed. The main area came off without a hitch and the tech advised me on how to proceed with the other portion of the house that unfortunately he could not fix as it involved live PECO wires and an issue that PECO would be responsible for. The tech returned the next day as promised to seal portions of the separation between the roof line and facia and advised on getting my insurance company in to mediate a resolution between PECO and the issue that their wires are causing to the side of my house. Fisher and Sons followed through and were with me every step of the way. The tech even allowed me to climb up to the roof to look over the current condition of the roof despite my fear of heights, the tech assured me he was with me every step of the way.

Thomas was very knowledgeable and did a good job of correcting the pitch on our fiberglass roof deck. We met with a few roofers before we met Thomas. The others all wanted to replace the roof with a tar one. Thomas was the only one that seemed to have a good sense of how to work with Fiberglass. I would recommend him. Thanks Thomas for your help.
