Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How long does it take to install a window?

It can take less than an hour to install a new window in a house, and you might be able to install all your windows in less than a day. However, this is assuming ideal conditions and that the previous window is already removed. Factors that may add to this timeframe include larger or more complex windows like bay windows or sidelights, as well as windows being installed in hard-to-reach places.

How do I prepare my house for replacement windows?

To prepare your house for the installation of new replacement windows, start by clearing a path and the area around the window. Take down any window treatments like blinds or curtains, and cover your furniture to protect it from dust. And make sure the window replacement crew will have access to your house.

Before the window installation service arrives at your home, ask them if there are other preparation steps you should take.

Do window installers work in the rain?

It is possible to install windows while it’s raining, and some professionals may perform the job in the rain. But keep in mind that if the rain is falling especially hard, it could cause moisture to enter the house. And, it’s not safe to work in strong winds or thunderstorms. Some technicians may also not install multi-story windows when it’s wet. Applying caulk can also become less effective if things are very wet.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

I had a great experience with Smart Shield Windows from start to finish. Brian was very communicative via the app, text, and phone from start to finish. He was also very accommodating towards my schedule and even drove back here separately to pick up a check so I could avoid an additional electronic payment fee. Prices were reasonable (even on the low side) for the size and quality of the window. Artur and the window installers were also very accommodating and they worked quickly both in measuring the window and in the installation (which involved removing the old window and my window treatments and then reinstalling the window treatments). The quality of the window and installation looks significantly better than my original, new construction condo window. I will use Smart Shield again if I need another window installation/replacement in the future and would recommend them to others.

I hired ADAD to install 4 replacement windows in my home. The windows were custom made so there was a bit of a wait but Mr. Dever made sure that I was kept updated. The price was reasonable compared to other quotes I received, and the windows are now installed and they look great. A+

Bryan and his team did a great job with the new window installation. Bryan was very knowledgeable in the window options, sizing, and process leading up to installation. Mike, the installer, was very skilled in his craft, installing in a timely manner, and making sure all the finished touches were on point. New trim around the inside and outside of the window as well. Highly recommend this team. Thanks! Before and after photos attached.

Phil installed a transom window in our rowhome, installing it into the original wooden frame. He showed up on time every day, worked quickly and kept the work area very clean. The window installation went very smoothly, and he was able to restore and fix the old wooden frame from the previous transom window. We are really happy with the end result and looking forward to working with Phil again in the future for more home improvement projects.

I hired Window Guardian to replace 10 windows I had installed from a large window company over 6 years ago. I was very impressed with the quality of the windows as well as the professionalism and overall job site cleanliness of the workers. I would highly recommend this company for your window installation. Bryan who came out was very knowledgeable and and made the process a breeze and was always accessible whenever I had a question . As far as pricing goes the were lower than the other 3 companies I had come out, don't let that fool you, the quality of their work speaks for itself.

Mr. White of Thermal Tite responded quickly and provided a reasonable price. He communicated frequently with me answering all my questions eliminating any uncertainties that I had regarding the scope of work. We kept in touch weekly while waiting for the manufacturer to deliver the window ordered. The day the job was scheduled Mr. White arrived at the time stated, carefully prepped the area with drop cloth to protect the floors and carefully demoed the old window. The new window was installed swiftly. Mr. White returned the following morning as promised to complete the exterior capping. I’m completely satisfied with the outcome of the window installation and have noticed a significant difference, there’s no longer a draft of air. I’m sure I’ll save on this winters heating bill. I highly recommend Thermal Tite Inc. for your replacement windows and home improvement projects.

I’m really pleased with the service I got from Bryan and the rest of his team at Smart Shield Windows. I recently purchased an investment property that needed some windows replaced and a new exterior door. Although I wanted to, I wasn’t ready to replace all the windows. Bryan helped me choose which ones I would benefit from changing and which ones I could wait on. The install happened sooner than I expected which was a pleasant surprise! The new windows look fantastic and are much higher quality than what I had. I have already recommended Smart Shield and would happily use them again. Thanks Bryan!

I worked with Bryan and he was extremely responsive. He answered all my questions and concerns throughout the process. His team was also pleasant to work with when they came to my house for measurements and installation. The windows that are now installed are excellent - MUCH better temperature regulation for my home, very easy to use, and much less noise coming in from outside.

I had a window that had been installed without a lintel and exterior cap by my home's previous owner. The team at ADAD Construction came out to view the space and worked up a quote that fit my budget. The job was done in half a day and looks great. William and his team are very professional and courteous.
