Jim and team were amazing! We had a fairly big project to undertake and they did not disappoint. They arrived early and were ready with the necessary man power, trucks, and additional supplies to make the move as easy as possible. Once they had the game plan down, they were off and running. All 6 men worked very hard and were very careful with all our boxes and antique furniture. The trucks were expertly packed and all furniture was properly protected with blankets. When moving the larger, heavier pieces into the house, no walls were harmed in the process. When all was said and done, they came in 1/2 hour under the quote. Hopefully we won’t be moving again anytime soon, but if we did, I would definitely hire Aldephia Moving again!

I used On-Demand Moving Services for my most recent move in Philadelphia this past week, and I would encourage you to use any other company than On-Demand for your moving services. I used Thumbtack to obtain quotes from several different moving companies and On-Demand gave me the most competitive quote, so I decided to use them this time, but after this experience, I will never again use this company or any company suggested by Thumbtack. We are two single women, so we had a moderate amount of things - 2 bedrooms, a couch, a few bookcases and a dining room table as well as several boxes. They had 3 movers come out and they moved incredibly slow. It took them 5.67 hours to complete the move (I moved 0.5 miles down the road). The quote that the manager gave me was inherently deceptive. The estimate included 3.75 hours of labor (at $105/hr) and several other fees (# of flights of steps at each location, mileage, mattress cover, etc.) and it came out to around $500. Lanre, the manager, had e-mailed me that he thought it would take 3.75-5.75 hours for the move, so I was prepared to pay more than the estimate when it took them 5.67 hours to move me. At the end of the job, the mover quotes me $950 for the total. I knew instinctively that this must be wrong because I added about 2 more hours of labor at $105/hr to my $500 quote and thought he would charge me around $700. I called the manager to discuss, and he said that the quote he gave me included a “one-time charge of 1 hr travel for the move itself”. I still did not really understand what he was talking about, but basically, he sent me an estimate that said it was for 3.75 hours of labor, but it was actually what it would cost for 2.75 hours of labor with an additional flat fee hour travel charge of $105 for the move itself. I asked him why he would send me a deceptively low quote for an hour less than what he thought it would take to move all my things and he just replied, “It is only an estimate because we do not know how long it will actually take.” We went back and forth for a while, and then he suddenly found an “error” in his calculations, and then quoted me $810 for the move. At this point, I was so disgusted with this company and wanted their movers out of my home. I paid the $810, but I would say, please do not use this company. They damaged my wall (I moved into new construction) during the move, moved at an incredibly slow pace and then used deceptively low estimates with hidden fees that resulted in me paying way more than previously agreed.

Art responded to my spontaneous request for moving furniture around my house before the labor day weekend. He sent Rashid and Rahim. They did a great job and were very careful not to damage anything. I would ask for their services again with mo hesitation. Frieda August 29. 2018

Revell moving company was so helpful. I was moving from a two bedroom apartment to a house about two miles away. The quote they gave me was incredibly reasonable so I jumped to hire them and I’m so glad I did. Dante and Dan were amazing! I was given a window of arrival between 9 and 9:30 and they arrived promptly at 9 AM and we’re ready to go. They were so careful with our items, worked incredibly hard, as were both so professional and polite. They carefully wrapped our dressers, mattresses, and our TVs for careful packing. They even brought their own dollies to use. Our move took about 5 hours and it was fairly warm outside but I never heard them complain once. They were awesome! If I was moving again, I would choose Revell in a heartbeat.

Jose and Freddy did a great job with our moving. We had to wait for 2 hours beyond the scheduled start time, but that was due to a problem with the truck and they had to get a new truck from Budget. When they arrived, they handled the job well. We appreciated their help.

OUTSTANDING!!! I was lucky enough to find Jeff at the last minute as my move came up very suddenly (the weekend of Labor Day). I did a lot of research and was alarmed by what I read about how moving companies handle you and your stuff. Speaking with Jeff helped to ease my nervousness. We spoke a few times on the phone and via email, he was readily available to discuss any concerns I had. The day of the move they were there before me ready and waiting, got to work immediately and had my stuff packed safely and neatly in the truck in no time. The unloading process proved much the same - again reaching the destination before me and making short order of moving me into my new place. They even put my furniture together! Jeff takes pride in his work and his staff and that shows. To anyone considering hiring him - DO NOT HESITATE - he is worth his weight in gold. If you want a smooth painless process give him a call. Thanks for making my move so very easy!

Lowe's wouldn't move a refrigerator I had purchased into my kitchen because they had to move it down a narrow spiral staircase so I called these guys and they arrived within an hour of confirming the job. They removed the old fridge and installed the new one within at the next hour. This was by no means an easy task and they did it quickly, efficiently, and affordably on short notice. Highly recommend hiring them for your moving needs!

I would highly recommend FCM for moving services. Although they were running slightly behind schedule to start the day, they proactively notified me of schedule changes so I could adjust my plans accordingly. From the moment they arrived, they worked hard to load up the truck quickly, and most importantly, carefully. The same applied to unloading the truck at my new apartment. The tight stairwell at my new apartment presented many challenges, however, FCM's persistence and creativity allowed them to navigate those challenges successfully, with little to no damage to the hardwood, or walls. They were very professional to work with, from start to finish.

I liked moving with Last Minute Moving and Storage. They were very nice and friendly. This was my first time using moving service and if I was moving again I would use this service again. They moved all of my stuff securely and they would help you with from packing, moving to even cleaning but you need to tell them before hand so that they can bring all the packing and cleaning stuff. Also, it's a good service if you don't have much time to plan your move as the name suggests Last minute Moving and Storage. But I feel the move could have been better if they had brought stuff for packing like tape, scissors, padding etc. I felt one of the worker was more active than the other. Also, please have cash handy or zelle app because they don't carry credit card machine.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
