Bulent is a meticulous, astute, and compassionate teacher. I approached Bulent to develop my abilities as a bass and aspiring soloist in my vocal group. Over the course of a year, Bulent extended my upper range well into consistent high baritone, dramatically improved my understanding of my voice, and helped me realize I could sing a broader range of music than I’d originally thought. From my first lesson, Bulent began steadily eliminating unhealthy habits, aided by his immense patience and an uncanny ability to detect even the slightest amount of strain. He taught me to recognize when and how my voice grew tired, and to trust my body to produce sound naturally, not to force it to sound like particular vocalists. Bulent also helped me see how aspects of my lifestyle influenced my voice. The progress we made has allowed me to cover low bass to high baritone with greatly-reduced tension, leading my group to choose me for a wide range of solos. Bulent brought intense focus and great patience to every voice lesson, always paying close attention to tone, pronunciation, and pitch. He set his expectations high on all these fronts while exuding nothing but warmth and encouragement – I enjoyed striving to rise to the challenge. I can credit my much-improved confidence as a singer to Bulent, and continue to apply lessons from our time together in my rehearsals and performances with my vocal group.

High praise for Otis Read. He is a talented musician, and shares his musical creativity and teaching skills with me every Friday morning. He has done so since September 2017. Otis is attentive, patient, congenial and enthusiastic. He has innovative answers for the numerous questions I have about chords, reading music, fingerpicking—anything that comes up during our lessons. He brings himself totally to these lessons, never preoccupied or rushing through them. I am always curious, and he takes the time to show me alternative keys for various songs, styles/methods of strumming/plucking as well as inventive “moves” on the guitar. I have learned so much in the nine months we’ve been working together. Otis is also honest, no false praise from him. He challenges me weekly, making me a better player. When I get discouraged about being unable to negotiate a complicated chord or frustrated with my lack of plucking agility, he’s always encouraging and supportive. One anecdote: Several of my musicians friends,—guitar, mandolin and stand-up bass —were playing at my house recently during a big party. They insisted I play with them—I was petrified, deer-in-the-headlights intimated. I got my guitar and sat in with this talented group, and while I’m not in their league at all, I was able to handle the material and sound good. The musicians complimented me and the rest of our friends applauded. Wow! Thank you, Otis!

I would highly recommend Brad as a guitar teacher. He has experience teaching students at a range of skill levels and takes time to understand a player's specific musical interests. He has a flexible approach, offering lessons over Skype and making himself available for questions in between lessons. I will keep working with Brad in the future and any other guitar players in his area should do the same.

I can't recommend Jacob highly enough. Not only is he a super nice guy, but he is an excellent teacher. He is patient, dedicated, and very talented. He really listened to what I wanted to get out of lessons, and catered his lesson plans to my desires and goals. He even put together some really helpful videos for me (on his own time)! so I could continue learning at my own pace. Jacob is also very flexible with scheduling. I couldn't be happier with my choice to higher him!

We weren’t sure our 6 year old son was ready to start piano lessons but we thought we would try it. Liana is so professional and treats him like a little grown up. As a result, he acts like a little adult with her and focuses on what she asks of him. In three months, he has learned the notes on the treble and bass clef, is learning the values of the notes and actually tinkers around at home with creating songs. I recommend giving Liana an opportunity to show you what she’s capable of teaching. To top it off, she is a very nice and kind woman.

I came to Ben looking for lessons on piano improvisation. Coming from nothing, Ben did an extraordinary job immediately helping me become familiar with the concept of improvising while pushing me to not only challenge myself, but to understand what I was doing and why it made sense. Ben's background and talent really show in his teaching style and I left every lesson anxious to get home and practice what we had just gone over. I'd recommend Ben to anyone who wants to get top level education in anything piano.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
