Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a plumber during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If possible, it’s best to set up a virtual consultation or phone call with a plumber near during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can send a message to a professional plumber near you and ask if they are available to video chat or have a phone call. Use that time to discuss the work that needs to be done. Make sure to ask any questions you have about the project. And lastly, ask the plumber how they handle payments and whether they have any specific safety precautions in place to comply with social distancing.

How can I find out if a plumber is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Generally, plumbers are often considered essential service providers. Essential service providers vary from state to state and city to city, however. For the most accurate information, check your official state or city government website to see whether a plumber is considered an essential service in your area.

Read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a plumber when social distancing?

Contact plumbers near you beforehand to see if they can complete the project without entering your home — for example, by entering the garage to fix a broken water heater. If the plumber needs to enter your house to do the job, you should proceed only if both parties feel comfortable with the project. Consider taking extra steps such as waving instead of shaking hands, staying 6 feet apart, using digital payments and sanitizing common areas.

Can I use digital payments to pay for plumbing services?

Some plumbers accept digital payments -- Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, etc. -- for their services. Before you hire a plumber, ask them if they accept your preferred online payment. Many also feature digital payment options on their profiles. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, digital payments are typically considered safer than cash and credit cards.

Does a plumber need to enter my home?

A plumber will need to enter your home to fix plumbing issues like dripping faucets, clogged sinks or toilets and leaky pipes. They might not need to come into your home if the faulty appliance is located outdoors or in the garage. Before you begin the project, contact plumbers near you to find out they will need to enter your home.

Do plumbers offer remote or virtual services?

If you see a profile that states the plumber is offering remote services, contact the plumber before hiring them to see what those services include. Although plumbing is a job that has to be done in-person, you can ask them if they offer virtual consultations or an online walk-through.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What happens when a water pipe bursts?

When a pipe bursts, the water can cause indoor flooding and damage your home. If the pipe is in an accessible location, you will likely notice puddles of water right away. However, if the pipe is underground or behind a wall, it may cause reduced water pressure, a sulfur smell or discolored water. All of this can cause significant (and expensive) damage, which is why you should always contact a plumber near you if you suspect your pipes are leaking.

What do you do if you have a burst pipe?

First, switch off the water supply to reduce the water damage. You should also turn off the electricity for the part of your home that has sustained the leak, as it can be extremely dangerous if the water comes into contact with an electrical socket. Next, drain the remaining water from your faucets so it doesn’t freeze inside the pipes.

Once you’ve done all of this, search for qualified plumbers in your area and ask them to provide you with a quote.

How much does it cost to repair a broken pipe?

The national average cost to repair broken pipes ranges from $120 to $170. Prices can vary depending on the type of damage, whether the pipe is easily accessible, the materials needed and where the pipe is located. For example, an exposed pipe under the sink will likely cost much less than a pipeline in your yard that requires digging.

Your overall cost will also depend on the hourly rate of the contractor. Most plumbers charge between $60 and $65 per hour for standard pipe repair, and up to $95 per hour for complex plumbing work.

Brandon was very quick to respond back and was able to replace the pressure relief valve that's been bothering us for the past two years. My husband, on a personal note, liked that he was a fire fighter at the station right down the road. He was pleasant, efficient, and told us to contact him if we needed anything else plumbing related.

We had a major Plumbing Leak in my kitchen after Thanksgiving and Bobby was able to promptly come out and take care of the situation on the same day that he was contacted. He was very friendly from our conversations on the phone and very respectful from the moment he walked into our home. I would highly recommend Bobby for anyone who needs any help at their house.

Jim was nice to speak with regarding my plumbing issue and told me he’d come to my house to check it out the next day (no problem). Once I told him I was getting other quotes he never went to my house and told me to just let him know if I decided against the other plumbers. So I never ended up getting a quote from him.

Bobby called me early like I asked & he gave me a quote which was very reasonable & he was here bright & early, which is great for me since I wake up at 5am, ready to work. He is great, reasonable, friendly, straight forward & doesn't play games. He didn't jack the price up or talk to me like I had no clue or was dumb cuz I was a female, some contractors do. He gave me a quote on other work that we need done & he'll be back to work on part of those soon. He made sure everything worked right & he cleaned up his mess, so everything was as he found it or better then he found it I would & will recommend him for any plumbing work that needs to be done

Bobby Allison has been an absolute pleasure to work with. I have an older house with galvanized plumbing and had a pipe leak causing me to complete a bathroom repair and replace the galvanize pipe. Not only did Bobby save me money, but he went well beyond the initial scope of the project. Even though I just met Bobby on TT, I selected him based on his reviews and mutual contacts. We arranged for him to start the work while I was out of town. What started off as just pipe replacement turned into much more. Bobby offered to complete the bathroom through the rough in phase. He demoed tile and tube, repaired sub flooring and drywall, and selected tub and toilet per my specifications. Bobby and his team were very resourceful and helped me out when I needed it the most. His work was professional, he was very responsive, and cleaned up after himself. Quality work from a quality guy. Bobby is 5 STARS all day long and I cannot recommend him enough.

I had a leak in my water main line in between the house and the meter. I Found out about it after getting a huge waterbill. Being a fairly new homeowner I didn’t have a go to plumber so turned to thumbtack. After speaking with a handful of plumbers for the job I chose to go with Joe. His quote was good and Moreno importantly talking with him on the phone he was very knowledgeable. Over the next few days I called and texted joe multiple times with questions and concerns and he always responded within a few minutes and was always kind and helpful. Joe came today to fix the water main it was raining and cold, didn’t phase joe and his team! He showed up on time, had all the necessary supplies and equipment to get the job done. Even when they ran into a huge stump they took the time to saw through it and ensure all the codes for depth for the line were met. At the end of the project joe described in detail what he did, including taking pictures of the work under the crawl space so I could see. Since it was raining joe even stopped and picked up some hay so the mud wouldn’t run, Overall, I highly recommend Simpson a plumbing and Joe. From initial contact to the end of the job they were professional, knowledgeable, and great to work with. Thanks guys!

Jim initially came out to diagnose a muddy/constantly wet area in our yard that was just a few feet from our water meter. I had already had the City Water folks come out, and they had determined that whatever the issue was, it was on my side of the meter and therefore my responsibility. Jim came by within an hour and was able to partially diagnose the issue. He determined that the issue was probably a slow leak in the pipe connecting our water meter to our home. He didn't charge a service fee or anything in order to come out and take a look, but he did indicate that the area around the leak needed to be dug up so that he could provide a specific diagnosis and estimate. Being the cheapskate that I am, I chose to dig around the area. I dug down and pretty quickly found the area that was causing the leak. While digging, I apparently bumped into the pipe, creating an instant geyser of water in my yard. Yeah, I was freaking out at this point. Advantage Plumbing and Drain to the rescue! I called Jim in my panic. In less than 30 minutes he was back at my house, had the water cut off and was working to carefully dig around the exposed pipe. An hour later, our pipe was repaired, and for a VERY reasonable price. We had family coming in from out of town that night, and if Jim hadn't been available to swoop in and save our water, we might have gone all weekend without anyone being able to shower, brush their teeth or anything. I'll tell you this much, I've found my plumber for as long as I live in Greenville. Sincere thanks to Jim and the folks at Advantage for providing up-front, honest service and excellent work.
