I met with 7 different local contractors to remodel our home in Charleston and no one even came close. These guys work well together and are EXTREMELY meticulous. Not only did they give me the best quote, they started the project the very next day! I HIGHLY recommend this crew without any reservation. These guys are passionate about what they do and it translates directly into the quality of their work.

Hired Mike to hang, mud & paint some drywall where we installed recessed lighting. His work was excellent & he finished in 3 days. Last time I hired a drywall contractor it took 2 weeks to finish a smaller job. Really appreciated the long hours he put in & all the hard work. Great guy & his work looks excellent!

Alex was on budget on on time. He was efficient and polite. Alex expertly defined the job (roofing repair) explained it so even I could understand and reviewed exactly what he and his crew had done. He even repainted a section of the trim close to the roof repair that had been damaged that I had not noticed. I would wholeheartedly recommend A&A Contractor and Alex.

Shane is very down-to-earth, personable and easy to work with. He set the posts for my fence yesterday, only 1 week from when he gave me the quote. The rest of the fence will be up on Monday after the concrete is set. Shane does the work himself with the assistance of his wife. This isn't the sort of company where you get a quote from one guy and then someone else you've never met does the work. When Shane set the posts he ran into an issue when the auger bit snagged a buried sprinkler line in the yard. (Unforseeable issue). I was impressed with his ownership of the problem, and within a few hours and a couple trips to Lowes he had it fixed. He even let me retest the sprinkler system and inspect his handywork before he continued with the posts. Problems always arise with contractor work. It's how the contractor handles the problem that demonstrates their value. Stopping a job to fix a problem is a quality I value in anyone working for me.

I estimated my painting job to four companies and decided on Tri Square because they explained the entire job to me in detail with specific processes and pricing. His team showed up first thing in the morning and turned a two day job into a day and a half by working hard while still inspecting the details. The quality of the work was amazing and I would recommend this company to anyone looking for a painting company. His company also does other work and he is now my contractor of choice for the next home improvement project I have.

We just had our two skylights replaced by Titan Roofing. The process from start to finish was amazing. I initially contacted Thumbtack for Skylight Replacements and Richard Bogoslofski of Titan Roofing got back to me within five minutes. We then made an appointment for him to come out and look at the job. He was scheduled for the following Friday at noon – you can imagine my surprise when he was knocking on my door at NOON on the scheduled day. How often does that ever happen nowadays? Richard reviewed the job, gave us a few options; took into consideration what we wanted and stated that he would be able to order the glass and would be able to start the job in a few weeks. We told him we were in no hurry – we were just thrilled to have had someone who actually showed up on the day the appointment was schedule, let alone the correct time. Richard got back to us with an outstanding and very affordable estimate within two days. Needless to say based on his affordability, responsiveness and professionalism we selected him to replace our skylights. Richard was supposed to start the project in two weeks, but called when he had a cancellation the week before (thankfully because we had just discovered that we had a small leak in the skylight area). He inquired as to whether it would be okay to start the job early and we jumped on it. I got home that day, the job was completed and if I hadn’t looked up and seen the blue sky (or the stars at that time of day) I wouldn’t have even known he was there. It was cleaned up to perfection. I am sure by this point you have guessed that we couldn’t be any happier or satisfied than we are with Titan Roofing. True professional. I definitely and highly recommend Titan Roofing for any roofing (or skylight job) you may have. Next time we have a roof issue I won’t have to return to Thumbtack but will head right to Titan Roofing.

Alpha Omega offered me multiple options for my roofing projects and absolutely the best warranty out there ... I researched the company and they have great BBB ratings and have been in business for quite a while - that means they are doing something right! I had a hard time picking a shingle color for my odd brick, but we found one that was perfect ...The work was done on schedule and looks outstanding ... I highly recommend them!

I have worked with many contractors before but these guys are absolutely the best. They work hard, do a fantastic job and come up with great solutions to problems that we have run into along the way of the renovation of my 1974 house. If you want a job done well and want it done right, these are the guys to do it.

It has been a wonderful experience with Bobby McClellan and his team and we recommend him highly. There has been a complicated water leak into our living room. We ask for help from five contractors hoping to give us suggestions to what should be done. Two never got back to us and two others recommended the same solution but it didn't make sense to us. Bobby McClellan came up with a brilliant but simple idea which not only fixed our problem but added a great look to our room. Bobby and his team where professional, caring and definitely perfectionists. They came at the same time daily, worked continuously put up protective plastic to safeguard wall hangings and furniture and left every evening having the areas clean and orderly.. Not only did they do a fabulous job on our living room they fixed my kitchen sink dis-function which a previous plumber was incapable of mending.

Fantastic experience with Deaville Roofing from start to finish. Highly recommend for roof repair or a new roof. John came out and gave us a very fair quote after he inspected the roof himself. Not all roof repair companies do this. We had a long detailed house inspector's list of concerns and John addressed everything within a couple of days so we could wrap up the sale of our home. Most importantly he is licensed and insured.

Wade and his team are awesome. They really focus on customer service. Throughout our conversations the theme was "you are the customer and we want to make you happy." I heard this not only from Wade but from all of his team members. Each member of this team was a pleasure to talk to and they did good work for a good price. Any concerns were quickly remedied in a friendly manner. Finding a contractor that is easy to talk to, gets the work done on time, shows up on time, and isn't trying to rip you off is hard! Wade and his team are great. Highly recommended!

As a contracting company, I am constantly on the lookout for motivated, qualified and responsible contractors to add to my team. This can be a very dicey proposition as it is my reputation that I put on the line when I choose provide work to other contracting companies. Unique siding was referred to me by one of my major supply vendors as somebody that I could trust, did quality work and was capable of handling some substantially large jobs. I have to say that nothing in life goes exactly as planned or 100% smoothly but these guys come pretty close. The quality of the work notwithstanding, there is not a price tag you can put on peace of mind knowing that the job you worked so hard to get is in capable hands and being represented well! A four-star rating, in my experience, has only been achieved by couple of other companies I have worked with. Five stars is unrealistic in my line of work, four stars is top-notch and believable when 85% of the contractors I've done checks on would have a hard time crawling above a two or three! They never set foot on one of my projects whereas unique gained and has been for a wile. A unique circumstance if you will!

I had a problem with a sagging beam on the front porch and had no idea who to hire to fix it. Fortunately, I called CH&H Renovations. Greg came out and accessed the situation and provided the solution. The beam was replaced, columns and handrail were added. They truly transformed an average looking porch into a beautiful one. I found CH&H to be prompt, courteous and very professional. Price was fair and workmanship outstanding. I absolutely would not hesitate to hire them again. Also had them replace my roof and it looks fantastic.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
