Carmen and her sister did a terrific job catering our 50th Wedding anniversary! The food was very good and their attention to detail was very appreciated. They even left the kitchen cleaner than when they found it!

I first met Chef Tyler several years ago at a Wine Group participative dinner where he led us in preparing a multi-course gourmet dinner. It was a spectacular experience, so my expectations were high for this time – a birthday dinner in my home for my husband and 30 friends - with eclectic small-bites. He and his team way exceeded my already high-expectations. Chef Tyler worked with me to design the perfect menu for the party, inclusive of all my husband's favorites. The guests raved and raved about the dishes. Some examples: “The best Tenderloin Beef slider I’ve ever had.” “What a refreshing take on Shrimp Cocktail.” And a Charcuterie Board to which guests returned and returned. His personal touch, and signature, gorgeous decoration was obvious on every dish. Highly recommended.”

Chef Julian was beyond my vocabulary to express how good he was. He arrived promptly on time, and began the dinner for a private couples meal immediately. He was professional and yet very social. We asked questions of how he got in the business and gave us his background. He is very passionate about what he does and the food speaks for itself. The courses came out in a good timely manner. The food was outstanding. I have eaten at some nice resturants, and had good food, but to see the quality of food he cooked out of my kitchen was unbelievable. This by far was the best meal I have had in a loooooong time. He boxed up any leftovers for us in our Tupperware, and cleaned after he was done. He wiped down all the counters, stove, washed all the dishes we used and even cleaned the floor where he worked. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone. I have never done anything like this before, and after reading all the reviews on him, it was an easy decision to choose him and made the experience unforgettable. 2 thumbs up, all day long. Thank you

Right from the start Sue was very easy to work with. She responded quickly to my questions as I was deciding on who to cater my daughter's wedding. Her confidence and accommodating manner won me over and I decided to go with Roosterdoodles for the big day. The selections to choose from for my menu were incredible. There was so much to choose from. I was able to choose just the perfect mix of food for the guests we were having. She made a trip to Clifton Park to meet me, see the venue, and offereed suggestions as to the table set up, etc. AS we neared the day, she responded with confirmations and asked if there was anything else she could help me with, like the cake and favors. I described the cake I was looking for and she said she could do anything. I decided to go with her for it, so she did everything. IShe offered some suggestions I did not want and I was very specific about what I wanted and she gave me exactly what I wanted. On the wedding day, she arrived with a small crew and delivered. She called to let me know exactly when she would be arriving and was on time. She and her crew worked the whole event, tending to the buffet and preparing the dessert table and clearing the buffet food. The presentation was gorgeous for everything, very classy. The mediterranean platter was unbelievable. The beef brisket was so tender, not tough like you often get with large quantities. The chicken was also incredibly tender and juicy, just perfect. The flavors of her sauces were mouth watering and obviously home made. The food was delicious. Everyone at my table all ask who catered. THey said it was the best wedding food they ever had. One guest said he rarely saw the quality of food that we had and he is global traveler by trade. Later that day and even the next two days, as I ran into friends and family, everyone commented on how amazing the food was. Some attended a wedding at a very popular country club in the area and they all agreed that my wedding was superior, both in the event itself and in the food. Susan's price was very reasonable, the service was excellent, and the food was out of this world. The cake was something like I had seen on pinterest. It was exactly what I wanted, even better! I will definately use Susan again. I can't wait to taste her other dishes. I may even make a trip to Cairo to visit her cafe. I know it would be worth the trip. I highly recommend Roosterdoodles for your event. You won't regret it!

Devonte, Chantel, and their team catered our wedding dinner. The only word we can use to describe this is WOW! They were consummate professionals from our initial meeting to plan this event thru preparing the meal to the clean up afterwards. The food was unbelievable, not only taste, but presentation was beautiful. When each course was brought out, Devonte would personally come out of the kitchen and provide a description and a back story. They truly create a unforgettable evening for our guests and us.

We are so glad to have chosen Elegance Simplified as our wedding decorator. Our wedding decorator was Renee. She is truly blessed with creativity and patience. During our planning, Rene was always available to new ideas, changes, and suggestions. She was punctual on getting our calls back and responding to any of our questions in a timely manner. We loved how she was super organized and treated us with professionalism. We maintain in contact multiple times by phone and email and she had everything in place! Before our wedding day, we met multiple times in person and worked together to ensure each detail was thought of. Rene went far and beyond when she met with me at the reception venue to view the layout in person and THAT meant a lot to me!!! Even though I had up and downs on my budget, Rene was able to make things work for us. She knew how to handle our situation and no matter what she worked really hard to make our day sweet and special. I'm thankful for everything they did for us on our special day! I recommend Elegance simplified to anyone! Thank you so much helping us through the entire process. It was truly fun!

Reuben and a Taste of Heaven did a great job. I, as the wedding coordinator, have no complaints. There was plenty of food, appetizers, drinks for everyone. I was super pleased that he brings utensils, cups/glasses, plates, linen, etc for his services. He, and his staff was very polite, and professional. I really enjoyed working with them.

My wedding was catered by Milagro's Latin Cuisine. I am Puerto Rican and my husband is Caucasian. We wanted to incorporate the culture and it was important to us to have authentic Puerto Rican food served during our reception. Not only was the food tasteful but I was really impressed with the way the chef surprised my husband and I with a small delicacy on each of our plates. We weren't expecting it! Everyone at our wedding raved about how delicious the food was. Glady's was very responsive, realiable, professional and creative. I highly recommend.

Total Events made our wedding everything we dreamed it would be. Trisha is thorough and has an amazing attention to detail. She thinks of everything, which made my job as the bride a breeze! She really listened to what we wanted and made our day exactly how we had envisioned it. More than that, she cared about us as a couple and made us feel so special. Would recommend Total Events to anyone for their big day!

Your Custom Catering was our vendor for our wedding last September, in hindsight we wish we had used them as our Planner as well. Almost a year later I still have people commenting on the quality of the food and especially the "Cobbler". They will be doing our Vow renewal.

Omg, the food was a HUGE hit at our party. They helped with more than we paid them for, so grateful to them for pitching in when our event planner didn't show up. We have already decided to book them at all our events. My mom even wants to book them for her wedding in Aug!! :) Awesome family!

We had previously chose another cater for our rehearsal dinner. Due to their tardiness and food we had to quickly get a hold of someone different for the wedding. Gail, Her husband and friend was able to get our dinner to us within a 24 hour notice. The food was amazing actually best collard greens and macaroni and cheese I have eaten. They honestly went way and beyond and gave top notch food and service. Have recommended their catering business to several couples getting married in the fall.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
