Megan was an excellent life coach and helped me define what things in my lifestyle were the most important to me. As we went through this process, it identified what direction I needed to take. I was at a pinnacle point in my life both professionally and personally when I had to make a choice between the two. Sacrifice my personal direction (family) and lifestyle, but gain financially and have job security....tough choice. Once she coached me I was able to find peace of mind and make my choice, which in the end was the correct decision.

“Marvae has been and continues to be an immense blessing in my life. Since I had been considering pursuing a career in coaching myself, I thought it would be prudent to actually work with a coach first to make sure that it was really what I wanted to do. While searching for a Christian Coach online, I came across Marvae. There was something about her website and blog that attracted me to her. What was meant to be a 9 week commitment (I believe), lasted over 2 years due to our son’s serious health issues. What made Marvae stand out to me is that she stayed in touch with me throughout this period even though we were not officially working together. The fact that she took time out of her schedule to think of me and then contact me, meant so very much. Her patience and compassion are two of her greatest virtues in my opinion.” “Marvae helped me grow in so many ways during our time together. She always conducted our sessions with the utmost professionalism. Marvae is a very knowledgeable coach. Now that I am finally officially in training to become a certified coach (Yeah!), I can see how she very skillfully supported and stretched me. She encouraged me to dig deep to uncover what was motivating my behavior. She guided me to see things that I otherwise would not have seen. Most importantly, she prayed for me and my family. That is why I have decided to continue working with her and have asked her to be my mentor (something I have always wanted!). I would highly recommend working with Marvae if you are serious about improving any area of your life.”

I am a different kind of life coach / I coach. I make touchdowns, and I win with my clients. I build from the foundation up. Mentally, spiritually, physically, and financially. It takes all four to guarantee absolute forward movement. Run the numbers...25%, 25%, 25%, 25%, = 100% leave one venue out your shootin' 75% from the get go..That's an automatic loosing situation, Life Coach Mike

I am a nationally certified life coach, author and speaker based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Through my time-tested techniques and positive philosophy, hundreds have learned how to create more of what they want in their lives and relationships. My own personal philosophy was forged through decades of overcoming struggles and building resilience. Today, my life is more satisfying and fulfilling than ever. I am healthier physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially than I’ve ever been before! But at my lowest point, I was 70+ pounds overweight. I was struggling to perform a job that I despised. I was lying to those I loved, but even worse I was lying to myself, about my sexuality. Even though I was a Christian pastor, married to a beautiful woman, and we had two beautiful kids together, something wasn’t right; I longed to be with a man, and frankly, to just be myself, and to no longer have this big ugly secret and the shame that came with it. I was tired of living to please everyone but myself. The moment everything changed was in 2011 when my mother was very sick and she was hospitalized. I went to see her and she began apologizing for several things we had already dealt with in the past. What I began to realize was that she felt like she was at the end of her life, and she had so many regrets for the way she had lived it, and there was nothing at all she could do about it. That experience helped me to realize that I wasn’t okay with being 60 or 70 years old, and looking back over my life and dying with a long list of regrets. I decided to start taking better care of myself and living a more healthy, positive, fulfilling life. Since 2011, I’ve lost over 50 pounds, I’ve peacefully ended my heterosexual marriage, and have come out as a proud gay dad who finally loves myself. I have a fulfilling career that excites and challenges me, and frankly, I’m better off financially today than at any other point in my life! Some of my experience includes: 15 years experience coaching and mentoring Hundreds of hours speaking/teaching publicly Nationally Certified Life Coach through the Life Coach Training Institute Ordained minister, qualified to officiate the rite of matrimony in the State of TN Certified to provide Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Certified disaster responder through Crisis Response International and FEMA to serve those facing crisis One of Oprah's 50 Inner Circle of O brand ambassadors for 2017 #OMagInsiders Even though I’ve come this far in life, I still remember what it was like to be struggling in virtually every area of my life. And I certainly haven’t arrived; there are still areas of life I’m working to grow in, and there always will be. So, you can feel safe knowing I’m not going to judge you or shame you. I remember what life was like dealing with the judgment and even the public shaming of others. My passion is the privilege of personally investing in the lives of others. I’ve studied relationships and positive psychology for the last 15 years. During this time, many people have been drawn to me for my support. Eventually I decided to dedicate my life to helping others like myself overcome life’s struggles. "Somewhere along the way I started believing I deserve all the good life has to offer. And gradually, but progressively, my life has continued to get better and better. Every experience - the good and the bad - is an opportunity to learn and grow." It’s time for you to go from fear to confidence; from anxiety to peace; and from inaction to success. Ready to get started? Contact me today for your free consultation...and let's get to work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
