Lauren and Alex immediately made time to come out after 5pm during the weekday on the very same day I requested the bid on Thumbtack to provide me with an estimate. They provided a quote that was 40% more competitive than the 2nd most competitive quote that I received during the bid process. They finished the project when the said they would, and I am very happy with the finished product. I highly recommend L.A. Professional Tree, Shrub & Landscaping Design for your complex tree pruning needs. BTW…these trees…they were 60+ foot oak trees and they were no less than 20 yards from my house. This was certainly no small project.

Antonio and his crew did an awesome job! The before and after pics are amazing! We had them clean up the landscaping around our porch, remove weeds & bushes, lay landscaping fabric, install landscape edging and mulch. They were fast, cleaned up after and very fair pricing. We will be using them again in the future.

We live fun a high-end neighborhood and hired AFA Landscape to remove all the existing front landscape and replace. We also requested that they rework the gutter drainage and sprinklers and add outdoor lighting. They provided a beautiful design within 2 weeks. We compared their design and price with other companies and found them to be the least expensive. The outcome is spectacular and we couldn't be happier. Not only was their work outstanding, but you would be hard-pressed to find a nicer, more cooperative team led by Josh Poteete. They really wanted everything to be perfect and everything was! Do not hesitate to hire these folks. It was a pleasure doing business with them and you will not be disappointed.

I hired Allen's Home Services to add mulch to my existing landscape area. Allen arrived on time, did a fantastic job including clean-up after the job was completed and at a much lower price than my previous landscape contractor. I give my highest recommendation to Allen's Home Services.

Our landscaping was out of control and in need of immediate attention. Lawnscape came out (on a Saturday) to provide an estimate for the work to be done. We were on their schedule for the work within a few days and they came the day they promised...on time. I am very pleased with the work completed which included driveway entrance/gate area, retaining wall frontage, front and sides of the house and patio area. The work included trimming, pruning, weeding, mulching/feeding and cleaning up and hauling away the debris. They're honest. They work hard. They do a great job.

Living on the side of a hill with several shady areas in our back yard we've had trouble getting grass to grow and serious problems with erosion over the years. Eventually we had some trees taken out and others trimmed way back and decided to give it a go with new grass. I originally had planned to have new sod installed in the Spring, and Nathan came out and gave us a great quote at the time but we ended up putting it off until Fall. When Fall came around, Nathan came out again and gave us another quote since we had had some new growth over the Summer and the new price was even better, so we said let's do it. He had to push back the install date a couple times, but he was understandably busy finishing up prior jobs. When he came out to install the sod, he was by himself and I was a little skeptical he was going to get it all done in one day, especially with all the going up and down our hill, but he managed to do it no problem. He had a compact loader/tiller machine that he used to till up the existing soil, bring in the new soil, and haul up the sod. He took his time cutting and fitting the sod pieces and making sure all the seams were tight. I kind of wish the Bermuda was down in the ground a little more instead of on top, but it should even out over time. The Fescue areas look great. The grass has been on the ground for almost 3 weeks at the time of this review and with religious watering it's now tall, green and healthy looking. Overall Nathan did an excellent job and I highly recommend his work to anyone needing any type of lawn or landscaping work. His price was right, he was friendly and polite, he kept in touch along the way and the finished product was very good.

They did a great job and responded by coming out within two days of calling! I used them last summer for some landscaping and this summer for mowing and trimming--- reasonable price and personable. They checked in with me to make sure I was happy with the result after the first time mowing. Wonderful to work with!

Called other irrigation companies and was told if we didn't install it, we won't fix it. Called Tim at Lawn Connection told him the problem scheduled an appointment he was there on time, fixed the problem. I now have his team taking care of the yearly backflow and winterization of my system. He also is saving me money during the summer thunder storms by installing a rain click sensor which shuts down the system during a rain storm or after while my neighbors systems keep running. Tim has a passion for landscape and customer service. Great company!!!

I would give them 10 stars if I could. Seriously, these guys were awesome. Jason was super flexible, helpful, and professional. Being a newb to landscaping and patio installation, he walked me through the process step by step. They worked through 90 degree weather and downpours to get the job done and it came out beautifully. Very trustworthy and great at what they do. Highly recommended!

Our landscape/hardscape project required a multitude of landscape services and skills including an integrated landscape design, demolition of a patio, concrete pouring and finishing, installation of an outdoor kitchen with stone work, stone veneer pillars, plant and irrigation installation, etc. All this was accomplished in a timely, organized manner to transform our 1.3 acre yard into a new wonderful living environment/experience. The difference was amazing. Paul, the owner and founder has over 21 years of experience and is extremely talented. I highly recommend Stonewater Landscapes to anyone seeking a professional landscaper.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
