Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

I hired this company for tree and shrub trimming. The main tree, a maple, is a mature tree, which had become misshapen due to other tree trimmers not taking the time and interest that L.A. Professional Tree Service demonstrated. The owner, Alex, and his employee cautiously and carefully trimmed the tree, with me watching. I found Alex to have very good vision, but he wanted me to watch to ensure that he and his employee did exactly what I wanted. They DID. (In trimming the tree, they came upon a baby bird which had just hatched and moving, showed it to me, and THEY suggested they tape it back to its home!) Also in their shrub and vine trimming, they were exceedingly careful - but efficient - and it was clear they are experts in their field. Their intrinsic and extrinsic quality compels me to recommend them to everyone I know. Their price is quite reasonable, and I will definitely use this company again. Job involved taking down a very large leaning white pine that was diseased. Then trimming a large maple tree that had gotten too heavy and was starting to break limbs. The next step was to trim and thin at least a dozen large hackberry trees that served as a fence row between Edwin Warner park and our property. Next part of job was to take down two yoshina cherry trees and trim four others of dead limbs. All waste was chipped and we kept some of that for use as mulch after it ages and dries out.

Jared and Tree Giants did an excellent job removing one giant hackberry tree and trimming three others. His estimate was good, he was very communicative, showed up on time, and cleaned up well. Way more professional than some of the other estimates/companies we dealt with.

Very quick response! Messaged on a Saturday night and he messaged back within the hour and came out first thing Monday morning. He completed the work of trimming a 30 foot empress tree by himself and hauled everything away. Cleaned up well and the tree looks great! Very good price as well, would hire again.

Needed a tree and shrub removed as well as some trimming of three trees that we wanted to keep in good health. They were very quick to contact me which based upon other companies i asked for quotes from (not thumbtack recommended companies) was not the case. Came out that day for an estimate and were able to complete the work in a reasonable timeframe (~1 week from estimate date). The guys were all friendly and professional and did a great job with our trees. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing work done.

Jared and his crew were very professional and skilled. They trimmed 2 very large trees that hung over our roof, driveway, and power lines without any damage. They left the yard clean too, getting rid of all the debris. We'd readily use them again if needed.

Jared was prompt with responding to my request. He met me within a few hours for a survey of my trees then came back in two days to trim 3 trees and remove some stumpage as well. His team was in and out within a few hours and cleaned up the yard as well. Very professional and reasonable on pricing. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to get rid of those lingering branches that may potentially affect power lines or even house damage!

I originally need 2 trees removed and 1 trimmed. While trimming the 3rd tree they found some hollow leader limbs and rotting. I hated to have the tree removed but, it had big limbs over my house and didn't to chance big falling branches. Jared's crew arrived on time, were professional, cleaned up everything. One problem was one branch damaged my mailbox and it had to be removed. They apologized and replaced the box. Though they are great at removing things they have a little difficult putting things back- I'll have to buy concrete and reset as the post moves easily. One of the workers said there would only be a small amount of trunk left- a couple of inches but, there is far more. I did decide to pass on stump grinding. They were kind, and very good workers. The job ended up being pricey but, the quality, professionalism and dependability made it worth it. Thank you Jared, Josh (I'm sorry, but I can't remember the 3rd guy).

He trimmed three very large trees over my house and carport and did a fantastic job. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend him without reservation. Thanks Alex!

I've been holding off on writing this review awaiting the outcome of an issue we had. To this point (well over a month), I still do not have the issue resolved. I paid Orlando a daily rate to come and cut down limbs and do some overall trimming up. He also quoted an additional fee to have three stumps removed (which was resonable and I paid). Unfortunately with over a month passed, I still have not had the stumps removed and have since asked for a refund of the stump removal fee. I have yet to receive my refund. His tree service was fine but the entire experience would not be considered excellent.
