Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a tiler when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a tiler in your area, stay at least 6 feet away from worker(s), don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payment platforms instead of cash or a check. During the consultation, put a plan together to help ensure everyone's safety.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Honest group of employees. They gave me a bid of a 150.00 by mistake and saw that I had told them there was 420 to 450 tiles when had finished the job. He checked his email and saw the email for 420 to 450 tiles and agreed to make it good at 150.00. I realized he had made a mistake in the bid and paid him another 50.00, even though he was willing to accept payment for the original bid. They did an awesome job on the tile floor and it looks like they had just installed a new tile floor. Thank guys for doing such an awesome job.

We had nemos tile remodel the tile in our bathroom. They were punctual and professional. They finished the job in 1.5 consecutive days. I would definitely use them again or even refer friends and family. I worked with Chris who has impeccable communication, he would keep us informed and answered all text messages fairly quickly. Great company with even better people.

I couldn't be more pleased with the work Eugene did at my house, or his professionalism. He was on time, polite, and got the job done quickly. I had Eugene clean my living room, dining room and hall tiles. I have pets that pee on my tile a lot and I was worried about the grout being too stained, but they made everything look new again. I was blown away by it, I thought that grout was done for. Price wise they were the most affordable offer I got and they couldn't of done a better job. I'll most definitely be calling them again for future cleanings.

Another handyman came to my house on 4/14 who I let go because he had no tools and removed tiles with bare hands. Ryan is a fast worker but he is unprofessional. On 4/22/2022, between 2pm and 8:15pm, he came to my house and installed 4 by 4 tiles on my bathroom wall. After cleaning my bathroom and Ryan's work, I found bruised/heat burnt-in areas on my expensive tub and water spout in addition to grout smudges and nicks around the edges. He installed 2 by 4 wood, hardy backer, cement, grout with tiles. He also left dust and smudges on my carpet, leather lazyboy chair and around my bedroom, bathroom and closet. I actually shut the door to my closet but he pushed it into my closed with the concrete mixer, soiling my clothes and closet. He stuck 3 midsized equipments and smaller tools in my small bathroom. He was paid labor $275 by Zelle on 4/22 not expecting to see nicks and bruised tub underneath the messy work area he left. Upon my invitation, he came back grudgingly on 4/28 and denied everything and almost denied smearing my leather couch. He raised his voice and was very unprofessional. Would neither hire again nor recommend. Below photos taken today 4/28 after thoroughly cleaning area. See brown burn on Water Spout and misaligned tiles at base of Spout. See also bad finishing above middle Faucet and Indelible damaged tub front edge.

I would highly recommend Meyer Floors. The job from start to finish was top notch. I've tiled a good bit, but I was too busy for this job (bathroom and hallway). Michael knows what he's doing, is professional, and works lightning quick! He was also very reasonably priced and a very nice guy to work with. I recommend Meyer Floors with no reservations!

After interviewing a number of companies, I decided to hire Elite Floors DFW. It was great decision. The cost was reasonable and the work performed was awesome. One of the main reasons I decided to go with Elite Floors DFW, was the gentleman who came out to measure the area for the quote. He was respectful and friendly. The day the project started, even the owner showed up to look over the project. There were several little things that they did I’ve never expected, like laying the tile in a way so the refrigerator could be moved for access. The installers came in worked, continuously with a lunch break. The installers did not sit around talking or goofing. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with hiring Elite Floors DFW! Daisy

Hired subs that do not know how to grout (like didn't mix it, just put raw powder in the cracks). Came to inspect the job at the end and thought it was good enough. It's one thing if you hire some folks who do a terrible job and own up to it, it's another when you try to say it's a good job. My pictures tell you a lot. While the grout looks okay, you can blow it out because it is just dust and not mixed. They just used the color powder and not any additive. Edge trim is not level and not applied properly. Missing tile. These photos are AFTER the job was "complete" and paid for. I reached out to Yeager to offer them an opportunity to correct this issue and they did not respond.
