Tim was such an outstanding professional carpenter for my projects. (1) Tim repaired my fence, replacing pickets and posts and then restained all of it. There was several challenges with this job due to sprinkler systems etc. but Tim took all precautions necessary and the outcome was Beautiful! Looks like a new fence! (2) He installed French doors in my home, painted and added hard wear. Perfectly done! Tim was always very fair in his charges. He was concerned with not only doing a job well done but made sure I was always pleased and received what I needed. He is a very honest man and always went beyond what was expected of his work. Timothy always stayed in touch with me during the projects and I was always informed of what was happening during the work. Tim has a great eye for seeing how a job needs to be done then he has the ability to follow through. He was excellent in scheduling. I will definitely contact Tim Stewart for any projects or needs in the future. He is very dependable. Timothy could not have pleased me more and I highly recommend his services to anyone!

We needed a carpenter to remove the original casings around the doors in our new house. We got quotes from several people and decided on Angel. He was not the cheapest, but was willing to negotiate with us on the price and seemed to have the most experience. He finished the project within a week. The new casings look great and Angel made sure to leave the house clean. Wish we could post a picture of the finished product!

Before I made my decision to hire Ausjac Constructions, I contacted 3 carpenters to get quotes on a crown moulding installation for the foyer, dining room, halls, master bedroom, and living room. One of the carpenters did not believe he could do the crown molding in my dining room. He proposed using trim instead because of the angle of the ceiling. Attached is a picture of that area in the dining room. Jake, Ausjac Construction, said he could modify the moulding in order to do the project. His prices were the lowest of the three quotes. I was very happy with his work and contracted further with him to do some window trim and laundry room shelving. I would recommend him and use his company for any carpentry that I need in the future.

My first home came with a leak in the roof and consequently damaged ceiling panels. Ron was a lifesaver, finding what was causing the leak, and not just patching the ceiling but retexturing it so that you now cannot tell there was ever anything wrong with the room. Ron also was an all-around handyman, restretching my lumpy carpet and fixing some of my plumbing. Ron was always friendly and upfront with me about his timetable and the expense, I have already begun recommending him to my friends.

Jason built a stair case for us. We had some ideas, but Jason showed us what he could do, and for what price and timeline, and we hired him. The next day, he started started early and on time. Jason came back for a couple hours the following day to finish. He did everything he said and we loved his work. We will hire him again in a heartbeat when we need a carpenter. Rick is a skilled craftsmen and a gentlemen. I was more than pleased with the quality of his work, attention to detail, and respect for my family. He was in our home for nearly 2 weeks from 9am -5pm and never wore out his welcome. Rick is responsive, courteous, and honest. He installed about 600 square feet of baseboard and did an excellent job.

As it turns out, we got much more than we imagined when we hired Pat: not just a carpenter and "handyman," but a craftsman. Our first project with him was a fence that "fit" the home, IPE deck, etc., and he exceeded our expectations (see photo).

Brian has completed a number of projects for me, and I think he's great. He is a meticulous carpenter and a creative and skilled craftsman. He remodeled my laundry room by removing cabinets and adding custom shelves & crown, it looks great. He added a trash station to my island cabinet, which is so much more functional. He installed custom shelves in a bedroom closet; he removed the metal ones and added nice painted shelves making the space much more usable. He also replaced my front door and added knobs and pulls to my kitchen. I plan to use him for future projects, specifically custom shelves in my master closet. I highly recommend Brian – he’s fantastic.

My job for Lance was a challenging conversion to create a nicely finished space under our stairs for our new dog. Being the uniqueness of this project i figured it would be challenging finding a contractor willing to take it on. Lance was excited about the opportunity and clearly takes a lot of pride in his work. He is timely, detail oriented and communicates very effectively on project questions. Lances skill are very multi faceted in all forms of carpentry as the project has turned out great. He has bid another job at our house that I plan to get going with him shortly. Very fair priced and skilled carpenter look forward to our future projects-thanks Dan

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

            Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

            Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

            How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.

Hello there! This is a very small project--I have two ready-made shelving units that did not come with backing, and I just need them backed with hardboard or other thin composite material. One unit is 185cm x 185cm and the other is 149cm x 79cm--the smaller unit is functioning as a media center and will therefore need two half-circles cut into the backing to hide wires. Ideally, I could quickly paint the backing before it is installed so that I don't have to spend the time taping off and painting 30+ shelves. Any takers?
