First time hiring a moving service, knowing horror stories from friends about broken keepsakrd and mirrors, I was worried. WM Pro Movers responded to my inquiry quickly, broke down everything I needed to know, and answered a couple questions I didn't know I had. They were open to adjusted times as needed and offered help picking up a washer/dryer set, I couldn't figure out to get myself. They all made a concerted effort to wrap and secure anything that could be scratched/dinged/broken. They arrived promptly, and worked hard to get everything the way we wanted. (And I know I'm not the easiest to work with) They were all friendly, and helpful, and very knowledgeable. Next time I move, these are the guys im calling.

Mike and his wife was awesome! I had a sofa and love seat that needed moving out of our apartment and because his help was sick that day he arraigned for his wife to come along and help. AMAZING! I will recommend Mike to all our friends.

I needed same day help moving a 300lb wine fridge from Costco to a storage unit. Within 5 minutes of my submission on Thumbtack, we had scheduled a pickup time. They were right on time, got the fridge loaded and dropped off in about an hour (which included a 15min wait on me at the storage unit). I would definitely recommend them for your smaller moves/extra set of hands in moving large (or small) items!

I've used Night & Day for two of our moves, and they absolutely killed it each time. Alix was super easy to work with, lining up his crew and providing quotes for the work. On moving day, the movers got the job done well under the time quoted and were extremely nice and professional. I'd give six stars, if it were possible. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Moving is one of the most stressful processes in life. These guys made my move stress-free by simply providing excellent service, being on time, being polite and professional and didn't lollygag with the time. I've had to move 4 times in 3 years, usually with three men walking slowly, carrying 1 small box at a time to the truck while I had to pitch in to get the job moving quicker. These 2 guys had pep in their step, had appropriate equipment to get the job done quickly (only 1.5 hours to load a 25 foot truck to the brim), and were a treat to work with. I'd recommend Spotted Frog to anyone who is done with over-priced, sluggish service and questionable staffing. This company knows what they're doing. Many thanks for a job well done!

Drew came to our home and installed a 65" flat screen and connections. He also had to move the existing plasma upstairs and mount it in a new location. I had several "extra" things I needed and he did them too, such as mounting two very large mirrors on the wall. He was outstanding, professional, and highly recommended.

This was the best moving experience service I have ever had. I had a terrible experience with a bigger moving company, I won't mention their name, Moo, so I was hesitant to work with any other moving companies. However, I was blessed to have found Mario and Sara. They are hardworking, professional, genuine, and have incredible prices. You don't need to look at the huge commercial movers. If you want it done well Ashford Home Services is the one to hire. They also do packing, unpacking, etc. I am also hiring them to haul some things away. I absolutely recommend this company to everyone!

I had heavy furniture and multiple heavy boxes to get moved from a 3rd story apt. to a 2nd story apt. Rocky and Joe worked cheerfully and steadily, getting the job done very quickly. They had already completed a challenging move before mine. This earlier move impacted their start time with me, but they called me throughout and made sure I was okay with the slight delay. It was no problem. Very communicative and responsible. They maintained a friendly, professional demeanor despite the physical labor and high humidity that afternoon. Joe had a long drive ahead of him back to college and an exam to study for the next day, but he worked hard and gave me the impression that had I asked him to stay on longer, he would have done so willingly. I couldn't have asked for a better team. Thank you, Rocky and Joe!

Brandon is awesome! He replaced 2 hanging light fixtures and 2 recessed can lights with track lighting fixtures at our office. He knocked it out in a couple hours even though we were missing a bracket and he had to run to Home Depot, he only added a $10 fee for the trip. I received 3 quotes from other electricians before going with Brandon, all saying the job would be really difficult and quoted me outrageous amounts. He came in, took a look and sent me an extremely reasonable quote. A lot of times companies will hike up prices for commercial jobs especially at a doctor's office. He did such a great job, not to mention he cleaned the site after having to do drywall work, that we paid him more than he charged. I highly recommend using HiiPower electric. Great work!

I just want to make sure everyone out there knows that this company is the best company I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. I am almost 60 and I have moved about 30 times in my life. In all those moves, I was never as pleased and completely satisfied with a moving company as I am with Right Choice Moving. Caleb and his team treated my moving items as if they owned them. They took great care in wrapping and protecting, and moving an extremely heavy item up 40 stairs with a very sharp turn between floors. Not only did they move quickly and carefully, they stayed to make sure I was satisfied and did not rush me at all. They set up everything and made sure all was working properly too! They are clean, professional, punctual, polite and easy to communicate with on what you want, and they find the way to perfectly accomplish your moving wishes. Above All, Their Prices are very affordable and don't be fooled just because they will have better prices than anyone else out there --- their expert performance cannot be beat and is worth much, much more than they charge. I highly recommend them and expect they will expand quickly as they will be swamped by just my family and friends alone! Better book now while you can! Great job Caleb!!! Awesome Service!!!

This team worked hard, worked well and worked fast. I moved into a house and hated the color of the walls. I decided to repaint the entire house but knew that there were parts of the process that I would have to get a professional to complete. When Marco and his team came to paint the staircase, it was clear to me that I was in over my head and they gave me a quote to paint the entire house. The price was reasonable so I accepted. After seeing the first coat, I was immediately elated. The color looked great and the quality of the work was incredible. Their crew was finished in 2 days with a two-level house. They took great care to protect the floors, trim and other areas of the house. I highly recommend them and would definitely use their services again.

I have used Greater Austin Moving going on two times now. They are professional, prompt and attentive to moving needs. They handled a last minute move for my daughter and was so accommodating and helpful. Tammy in the office was so friendly and went above and beyond what I expected. We were in a bind at the time and she took the steps necessary to ensure a smooth and quick move. They took great care in moving an entire apartment of furniture. The staff always responds either with a phone call or via email. The pricing is reasonable but what makes them different is that they will accommodate your needs and are willing to work with you to get the job done. I am using them again next month for another move and could not be happier with finding this outstanding moving company. I have passed along their info to all of my friends as well.Use Greater Austin Moving for all your moving needs and you will not be disappointed!

Daniel was great! Not only was he professional and persistent with obstacles that UT Austin West Campus apartments presented, but he was also patient with me trying to coordinate moving in 2 college kids at the same time! He even went with me to the hardware store to buy screws and bolts for a TV mount! You can't go wrong!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
