After being faced with my 3rd layoff in Jan 2016, I knew I had to change my approach to the traditional employment paradigm. I've always been a consistent top performer and always believed that my position was safe so long as I continued delivering results. However, this has not been what happens in my experience. Why? Because performers cost the company money. Yes, we make them money, but there are people in the decision loop who believes they can get the same results for less money. How can you protect yourself against a potential future layoff? YOU CAN'T! At least not following a traditional employee/employer relationship. WHAT CAN YOU DO? If all you do is to keep chasing your tail by doing nothing more than finding another job? You are not helping yourself. You need to find a way to generate some additional income stream that required very little time and effort on your part. I didn't have a clue where to start, but I did know that building an ecommerce website was one potential option for creating a hedge against the threat of any future unemployment and it could potentially be much much more! This is where Division X really shined for me. I at least had an idea for the website and that was the full extent of my knowledge. When I reached out to Tony at Division X, he not only spent several hours on the phone with me to help walk me through everything I would need, but he offered to help take a great many of them off of my plate. Tony had my domain, interface and shop set up within a couple of hours. There were several things that I simply could not figure out to do and that frankly were not Tony's responsibility to handle, but he took care of these issues when I asked and also sometimes when I didn't ask, but he could see I was struggling. How many of the big. name hosting platforms would or even could provide you with that level of service? No, it's not easy, I have challenges with the business every day, but without the help Tony has given me over the last year, I can confidently state that I never would have been able to get it off the ground. Lastly, Tony help me set realistic expectations for my new business. Yes, it take additional financial commitments to really push the needle. Unlike most of America, I'm not a fan of social media. Tony picked up on this and offered to run my social media campaign for me and at a fraction of the cost found elsewhere online! The bottom line is simple, you can't allow someone else to be the only thing between you and unemployment. You NEED to protect yourself with various additional forms of passive income as a hedge against financial ruin of you are laid off or fired. One of the least expensive options is a by building an online business or multiple online business. If you like the idea of taking some of the power over your own life back, Tony will always exceed your expectations and he'll never leave you disappointed. I have however, left him completely confused with some of my how to questions that require him to ask many more questions for him to figure out what I'm talking about. I can say without a doubt that you will NOT get the same levers of service anywhere on the web. Thanks Tony for helping me get Tools for Liberty off the ground!

    1. Anthony built our online store www.hillcrestrxpharm.xyz Anthony designed all of our print, virtual promotional materials and advised us on how to successfully operate an online business. He is an amazingly talented and innovative designer, we gave him 5 stars because of his work, exceeding our expectations 10-fold, advising us on online business operations, (the first 40 days, our profits soared, we have been running at 43.7% over projections since we met Anthony) and his biggest attribute is his negotiating skills in addition to his network (example, we have solid sources for our Rx suppliers) Anthony felt we were paying too much, (his commission is quite high for what he negotiates). His negotiating, cut our costs by 45% and suppliers who wouldn't negotiate, he introduced us to suppliers within his network who would work with us at prices which Anthony negotiated on our behalf. 2. Anthony does have his faults, he's not perfect, and an honest review, we feel should discuss the good and bad. Anthony is all business, his personality is that he is there to do a job, and that's it, he has no inner personal skills (thankfully his services don't include customer service, as he has little to no patiences, and God forbid if he has to repeat himself) 3. During our initial consultation, he listened and took notes, he is very forward. He told us he will research and complete the project the way he feels is best for the business, even if that finished product doesn't include any of our ideas and/or visions. Anthony required us, and said he requires all of his clients to sign an agreement "basically we gave Anthony, pre-approval on whatever he decides to create by signing his agreement." As Anthony doesn't do drafts and never asked for our opinion, after the initial consultation. Anthony did his thing and let us tell you, his thing is efficient, effective and kept us under budget (his work didn't disappoint, what we had hoped for). If you don't mind giving someone complete control, and having absolutely no decision making ability and the finished product, hands down the best for the cost, Anthony is the perfect choice. His work, and creativity speaks for itself, plus his business knowledge and network his are perfect, he calls and people actually jump. However if you have a vision, and want your ideas visual in the finished job (we would advise you not to use Anthony). As ultimately what we (his clients) wanted, seemed not to matter to him, he only cares about what is best and profitable for the business. My partner actually made the mistake asking about our vision, Anthony's people made my partner feel quite small. Reminding him that he signed full artistic control and creativity over to Anthony. A highlight in Anthony, beyond his creativity, is he and his team being very upfront and authentic, they explain what he does, how he does it and what your agreeing to before they accept your deposit (we had to put a deposit of 60% of his total estimate, only after we agreed to all his stipulations). The final bill for the online store and advertising materials was 23% under his estimate budget. My partner and I determined about 3 months later, we wanted Anthony to takeover negotiations for us, this is something Anthony is very good at, he knows wholesale vs. retail values and can makes deals with pretty much anybody. Personality wise he is much more human, and treated us like we had a place in knowing what was going on, as he did our negotiations for us (we never could figure out why). His fee in our opinion was high for negotiations but he earned it, saved us and continues to save us a ton in cost.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

    • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
    • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
    • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

    • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
    • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
    • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
