Our pup is only 6 was old and didn’t have interaction with her mother & limited exposure to litter mates for only the first 3 weeks: Lauren brought her 9mo old pup to interact as well as talk about the training and philosophy, etc. It was really great to see our Storm learning to be a dog, and good behavior as a dog right away. My husband and I were sold and went for the full training package :)

The K9 Kountry folks are flat out wonderful! What a difference they made in my dog's behavior. The best part was how she loved Butch. It is obvious that he loves his dogs and they love him right back. We will continue to use K9 Kountry for kenneling as well as training. I highly recommend K9 Kountry for their behavioral training, kenneling, and, most of all, for the love relationship they developed with my dog. She is happy to go there, and so am I!

Stephanie is a wonderful dog trainer! She helps me train my 4 month old puppy. She is very knowledgeable of dog behavior in general, and breed specific behavior, too. She teaches only positive reinforcement training techniques and is very sweet with my pup. Lola loves her, too!

Nicole is an outstanding dog trainer! When we adopted two shelter dogs of different ages two months ago, we didn't realize what we were getting ourselves into! We decided to bring Nicole in to help refine our dog's behaviors and help them settle into their new home quickly. Nicole's approach is both gentle and consistent. She also provided great tips along the way for things we can do going forward as our dogs' training becomes more advanced. Communication was always clear and everything went smoothly from beginning to end. All of us, dogs included, miss seeing her every weekend. She was truly a joy to work with! We highly recommend Nicole to all of our family and friends, and the minute we decide our dogs are ready for more advanced training, Nicole is who we will call! Thank You NICOLE!!! :-)

With only one training session so far I noticed a major improvement in my dog Bleau's behavior. He is so strong and pulls on the leash and Nancy was able to make him heel and obey. Nancy is incredibly knowledgable, helpful and accommodating. She truly cares about your dog and doing everything she can to ensure success with the training. I am so excited to practice the training excercises Nancy provided and see Bleau's progress!

Canine Training Center and Mr. Day literally saved our dog. The dog whisperer has nothing on this guy !!! Our 13 year old son wanted a puppy for a long time. We finally got him a 5 month old Australian Sheperd . The puppy was of course VERY high energy. Unfortunately he started showing lots of aggression towards people outside the house. We couldn't even walk him in the neighborhood because he would bark at everyone we passed. After the puppy had nipped at 2 people we contacted the breeder and were going to have to give him back. Our son was devistated. We put out a cry for help on thumbtack and Mr. Day with Canine Training Center reached out to us. We setup a meeting to discuss what what needed. He was extremely professional and calm . Letting us know everything will be ok and assuring my son that " Blue" could be the dog he wanted him to be. Our training was not just a quick one class and your on your own type of thing. It was 8 course class .Mr. Day trained us to train the dog , he walked us through all the steps of the process. It was very neat to see our son working with his dog and seeing the progress they made together. Since training Blue is so enjoyable and listens to us. Our training with CTC has allowed us to keep Blue and secured his spot in our family. We can't believe the turnaround of our puppy. They really do train Alphas..... if I could rate their services as 100 stars I would. Overall a truly outstanding experience with CTC .. Highly recommend.

Wanda is very kind and has helped us work with our crazy Bulldog Bella. Wanda takes a gentle approach and the dog loves her. She even met us at a park with her dog to give our dog socialization and play time. We have another dog but Bella enjoys attacking him. Most important is to practice the tools Wanda has taught us.

Elizabeth is such a blessing; I cannot say enough great things about her. I recently adopted a puppy, as a first time dog owner, and made the BEST decision to work with her every step of the way. She helped me since before I even adopted my puppy - she helped me find the best puppy for me and prepare my house to bring her home. After our first obedience training session, the puppy had already learned (among other things) how to sit!!! She is helping me socialize the puppy with my cats who have never been around dogs, and has taught me so much about understanding my cats behavior and body language that I had no idea about. Elizabeth is always available to answer any questions I have and is always willing to help. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone and everyone!!

Learned how to best control my dog's behavior in very specific ways. Darlene has great communication skills with straightforward information on what I needed to do and explanations on why. She's a professional trainer and does not waste your time but gets straight to the problems that needs correcting.

We have two terriers, ages 4 and 5. We adopted both animals well into their adulthood, and neither had any training. We put up with the accidents in the house, the nipping, and the complete lack of obedience for far too long because we wanted our new additions to settle in before we started correcting their behavior. Well, that is where Damon came in. He assured us that our dogs could behave AND go to the bathroom outside. That they were not the worlds worst (although cutest) dogs, but actually good dogs! What? My dogs can be trained? I was a little skeptical. Initially, we signed up for a private session. We love our dogs, but surely he would change his mind when he met them. Our dogs interacted with Damon wonderfully. They are a little much at times, and he knew exactly how to handle them to get them to calm down or play. We worked on some potty training techniques and talked about the format of his training class. Sure enough, we enrolled our dogs into a six week beginner course and they really responded. They enjoyed going to the park once a week, interacting with other dogs and humans, and best of all, working for food! Never in a million years did I think my dog would "sit" on command. Now they sit, wait, lay down, touch, and leave it! AND THEY POTTY OUTSIDE. I know these things may seem extremely basic to some people, but I honestly didn't think my dogs could be trained - not even to sit. I know some of you out there have dogs like mine. I do want to say, Damon only provides the tools. If you do not reinforce the expected behavior at home then your dogs will not respond. Our dogs were ready to work every Saturday morning, but not so much when we got home. Once we started enforcing those expected behaviors we got much better results. Be prepared to put in just as much work as your pup. I highly recommend Damon! Can't wait to enroll our dogs in more advanced training!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
