Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best electrician in Dallas?

A diligent search and review of electricians in the Dallas area can help you find the best one to do any electrical or wiring repair work. During your reviews, it’s important to research the electricians’ services, expertise, credentials and pricing.

You can try to search for an electrician’s license by visiting the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website. You should also spend time reading the electrician’s customer reviews and ratings. And don’t skip over photos of their past work — these can help you gauge the electrician’s quality of work.

Lastly, ask for a free estimate from several Dallas electricians before you hire one. This will help ensure you’re hiring the best person for the job and paying a fair price for their services.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Pablo was a really good guy and a great electrician...he's young and has a bit to learn...he picked up a photocell which we had discussed was necessary to complete the job. I'm sure as a matter of convenience...he bought one at Home Depot. Of course there photocells are not up to par with ones you'd get at the supply house. He also didn't have a hole plug. Which is as standard a thing as any electrician carries. Also, he was not able to provide a printed receipt. Aside from those deficiencies Pablo was excellent, quick, and charged a fair price.

I am happy with my experience. Another electrician might have inflated the charges and done unnecessary work. Quick tech was honest and quickly solved the problem. He was on time, and observed all Covid safety protocols. He was a professional from start to finish.

Good job. I liked that they called a day ahead to confirm. The electrician showed up on time. It took a while to figure out the issue but I reckon that is typical in an older home. Billing and payment was easy. I will hire them again when the need arises.

I’d had a bad experience with another electrician, and I had several electricians come and bid to finish the job. Aaron was highly responsive and professional and educated me on aspects of the job that everyone else missed. He and his team got started ahead of schedule and finished faster than I expected. They inspected the previous guy’s work and fixed everything to make sure it was done correctly and safely. They completed the wiring of the main panel and installed all of the breakers, outlets, and switches, installed ceiling fans, confirmed power to all lights, sockets, switches, appliances, and the AC system. They did walked me through when the job was done to make sure I was happy. Everything was perfect. Thanks!

Initial setting of appt was easy. Unfortunately it feel apart after that. Electrician called at 8:30am (sounding disoriented - did he just wake up or was there something else going on?) to say he would arrive between 11:30a-12p. Around 12:45p he texted he was on his way. I waited another half hour. Then dispatch called to say that he told them he couldn't reach me and never spoke to me so they were trying to confirm the appt. The appt was for a window between 11a-1p. By 1:15p I called and cancelled. At that point I no longer trusted what the electrician was saying and didn't want him in my house.
