What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. I hired Brittan to train me at my home and to help me find a variety of ways to strengthen my entire body while working around a heavily deteriorated spine and damaged hip. We work around my chronic pain and when a particular exercise becomes painful (versus challenging), he always has an alternative for me to try. When I started my search for a personal trainer, I did not know where to start. I knew I would likely need the person to meet me at my office gym because I work many hours. Also, knowing myself and my likelihood of continuing a workout routine and sticking to it decreases for each pause point (getting out of the office, driving out of the office garage to a gym, etc) that is baked into the process of getting to in an effective day's workout. I found Gigi on Thumbtack, reviewed her website, and made contact. Her response time was fantastic. We setup a time to discuss what I was looking for by phone. During the convo by phone, she recommended us meeting face-to-face (no pressure and no charge for either the call or the f-t-f meeting). Upon meeting her, I was impressed with her punctuality, communicating abilities (text, ability to use GPS for address locations, asking the questions I would expect when starting a workout routine, etc), her attentiveness to my answers to questions, and a no-pressure approach to discussing my training needs. I decided to try personal gym training for the first time and bought a package of sessions. I have now finished one package of sessions and feel stronger and have noticed more definition in my body tone. If you are considering personal training, be honest with yourself about: 1) how hard you push yourself when you work out alone. I know without a doubt that I would probably given about 50% (at best) of the push during my workout that I gave when working with Gigi. 2) the likelihood of actually getting to the location to workout (there are always more appealing options that we all rationalize our excuses away when deciding to blow off our solo attempts to go to the gym--friends meeting for dinner, family obligations, errands, and the list is endless) when going solo to the gym 3) the time (even a couple of hours a week) and the money you put into your workout really is for YOU, your health (physical and mental), and your life. I recommend Gigi for your training needs. She always has a variety of workouts (and even brings many different tools with her to add variety to the workout), takes notes of the workouts completed each visit, and strikes the right balance of push with a careful eye on your actual capacity as to not push into unhealthy territory for your body and physical level--this point is important because there are so many people with different capacities, different ages, needs, etc. Reach out to her, contact her, you will not be disappointed. FANTASTIC! More than just a personal trainer... she is my physical therapist. Lina is a fantastic listener and goes out out of her way to check in and provide support between workouts. She has a very hands on approach which I like. She's got all the fun toys and gear that make working out fun and exciting. Don't get me wrong, she will make you sweat, but she's have a smile on her face as she tells you to do "one more" rep. Lina, is always learning new tips and tricks that she shares with me to make my workouts the best experience. I've seen a huge improvement in my posture (what I wanted to work on) and more strength in my hip (old sport industry) along with over all feeling and looking fit and balanced. Very please with the attention that Lina gives. She's even working with my fiance; helping him over come a very bad knee injury...and because of Lina, he is now able to touch his toes and squat with ZERO knee pain! I would totally recommend her to EVERYONE I know who it looking for an AMAZING trainer!

I can't figure out how this "star" rating scale works, is 5 stars the highest or is 1 star the highest? Anyway, all I have to say about Lina is that she is great! First and foremost she truly cares about the client and it wasn't just me, I witnessed this same commitment with others as well. Second, she is very knowledgeable and experienced and demonstrated the ability to adjust nicely to my individual needs and goals, giving special attention to post-surgical rehab of my left knee as well as the overall injury related conditions due to secondary loss of strength, mobility, flexibility, balance and functionality throughout. Probably the most important aspect of training with Lina was more than just acting as a constant source of external accountability, she was a real coach, recognizing the importance of SUPPORTING THE DESIRE TO REGAIN A SENSE OF MY OWN INNATE MOTIVATION AND SELF-DISCIPLINE. Despite multiple set-backs due to other intermittent physical issues, she never gave up on me and never let me give up on myself! Having lost over 14 total inches, I must also speak highly of her skills with meal prep. I couldn't have done it without her! Exercise alone is good, dieting alone is good. Combine the two with Lina's expertise, you can't go wrong! As a matter of fact, it's the only way to go! I suspect that Lina is a rare find among the zillions of trainers to chose from. I was very fortunate that someone else shared her contact information with me. If you have stumbled upon this review by accident, don't waste a minute nor a second, call her now! You may be fortunate to get on her schedule before someone else takes the empty spot I leave as I go off traveling in Europe. It would be nice to say "Honey, I shrunk the trainer...." and pack her along. LOL!!

When I was searching for a trainer, I had a couple of specific things in mind: building a knowledge base for a healthy lifestyle and value. Laurie has exceeded my requirements and helped me expand areas I wasn’t aware needed improvement! I’m so thankful. A few key points below: Flexibility: I am somewhat new to the DFW area as I’ve recently returned to school for my doctorate. Laurie was flexible about setting and re-visiting scheduled sessions to accommodate my changing responsibilities. Amidst Covid-19, we were able to work-out in areas that adhered to safety guidelines (e.g., parks, rooftop garages, anywhere we could get some air flowing and keep physical distance). She is always ready to go as planned, and meets my 2-3 minutes “late” with a smile and understanding. Value/Expertise: I had a strict budget in mind that Laurie worked with and helped set realistic expectations for. Our total length together was scheduled for 3 months, but I’ve now adjusted my spending/expenses to keep training with Laurie for a couple of times a month, virtually rather than in-person. I am also delighted with Laurie’s thoughtfulness in crafting my work-outs. Work-outs that used to be very challenging are now more doable and that’s despite the fact that she increases the difficulty/complexity of them. Her expertise shows in how attuned she is to my steady progress and her creativity in designing something that pushes yet works for me. Of note, I was having some pretty bad lower back pain, and Laurie has also navigated this really well. My back pain has lessened as I’ve gained strength, which is exciting! Knowledge Base: As mentioned, 3 months was all I could afford and that was ample time, per my own learning pace and Laurie’s assurance, to help me gain fitness skills that will promote a healthier lifestyle. Everything Laurie teaches me is practical. I’ve found myself taking elements from different work-outs (she writes all of my work-outs down in my journal), and designing at-home, no/minimal equipment work-outs. “Give a woman a fish, and you feed her for a day; teach a woman to fish, and you feed her for a lifetime,” am I right?! Tangible Results: Increased strength and toning in arms, legs, and core. It’s nice when you notice yourself easily carrying things around your home without losing your breath (functional fitness for the win)! This is specific to me: I’ve had lower back pain that I consulted with my physician about. I needed to increase mobility, flexibility, and strength, which is hard when you’re in the classroom or at a desk for hours on end. Since starting this endeavor with Laurie, my back pain has lessened, which was one of my biggest priorities. I am also in a better mood overall. The world is a tough place right now. I’m so thankful I can escape it for a while when I’m working out with Laurie or when I’m applying the skills she’s taught me to work out on my own. Bonus: Laurie has a warm, nonjudgmental (so hard to find!), collaborative, and kind spirit. I’m personally motivated more by someone who lives by how she preaches, does so without being in-your-face about it, and is patient with me when I have an “off” week(s). She’s also embedded nutritional guidance, which has been very helpful. Lastly, I alluded to unexpected growth in other aspects of my life. I think that the fact that I’ve been able to change some unnecessary spending habits to accommodate for continued training with Laurie is also a result of our mutual investment in me. I’m feeling better all-around :)
