Note: since I live in the country, about two hours from Pramala's office, we did our sessions over the phone and FaceTime, and it was still 100% effective. I have tried all sorts of solutions for weight loss and never had much luck. Extreme diets produced instant results, but they weren't sustainable, and I always gained the weight back quickly. I finally decided to try hypnotherapy as a way to change my whole mindset and lifestyle, and I am so happy I did! Pramala is warm and easy to talk to, and she very quickly zeroed in on the issues and childhood memories that my bad eating habits were rooted in - even issues I would not have expected to have any effect on my relationship with food! I have lost five pounds in the first week and a half, and it is coming off steadily. More importantly, I am implementing healthy, sustainable eating habits that don't make me feel deprived at all. I can eat what I want without feeling guilty. It's just a matter of control. It sounds so simple, but before the hypnosis, it was incredibly difficult for me to stop eating, even when full. The only way I knew how to "diet" was to starve myself, which was always followed by binge eating. Now I feel like I am truly in control of my food, my life, and my weight. I would encourage anyone with an undesirable habit to book an appointment with Pramala - it will likely be life changing!

Without a doubt, Donna Jo has influenced my life beyond what I could have imagined. I have experienced post-rape PTSD symptoms including anxiety attacks and blushing in social situations. Traditional therapy had diminishing returns and I knew that I needed to try something different. Using hypnotherapy and cellular release therapy, Donna Jo relieved me of my deep-seated shame and bitterness and has enabled me to live my life completely differently. Donna Jo has been such a blessing for me and I can’t imagine what my life would have been without meeting her!

Tawni was excellent. She took a lot of time to understand what was going on. She is a very warm and insightful person. She figured out things about me just by talking to me. I have not done her type of hypnotherapy before and it is differentl, but I have felt pretty good since my appointment. So I am thinking of going back to see her.

Hypnotherapy from Michele has changed my business, personal life and inner-self for the better in so many ways! She is inspiring, kind-hearted, a wonderful guide and through Michele, I've also learned simple, yet amazing self-hypnosis techniques that I use everyday. She is a coach that truly cares about her clients. I've done one-on-one hypnotherapy sessions with her, in person and over the phone. I've also participated in her online self-hypnosis workshops and training. Each one has been inspiring and extremely well worth the time and investment. I've learned so much about how to work with my own mind to reach goals much sooner and easier. If you are thinking about reaching out to her for a session , stop thinking and just do it! You'll be so grateful you did. I know I am. Life since Michele is more fun, more clear and more aligned than ever before Jerry S.

In 1999 I wanted to stop smoking & Maureen treated me with hypnosis. Prior to my hypnosis session with her, I had tried to stop many times unsuccessfully. Following only 1 hypnosis session my addiction to cigarettes was over. I was impressed with her professional demeanor & her calm relaxed manner during our session. The service was scheduled and completed on time and although I felt a little dubious before the session about whether it would work, I was amazed by the result. I never smoked again and had lost all cravings & desires to smoke ! highly recommend Maureen's skills as a hypnotherapist and the success of her work with me. Thank you for 16 years of being nicotine free.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Tension headaches
    • Alopecia areata
    • Asthma
    • Phobias
    • Insomnia
    • Addictions
    • Bedwetting
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Labor and delivery
    • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
    • Stress
    • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
    • Cancer-related pain
    • Weight loss
    • Eating disorders
    • Warts
    • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
