Wilson, was a very great help to me today. I was having a toilet overflow after I flushed, and he came to the rescue. Even when I couldn't get a hold of my LANDLORD to get this taken care of. He provides great customer service at a wonderful affordable rate. I am on Thumbtack myself, and it was great to work with a fellow vendor to help you out. If you need any help with plumbing, or any other type of service. CRDR Handyman is the man with a plan! Thank you once again Wilson, and I will be sure to recommend your services to everyone.

Excellent service by Juan on multiple jobs such as changing the flush and fill valve, installation of new fan. What I liked the most is his versatality. May it be plumbing, electricity, he is the guy. Also very punctual about time and very good in communication. Looking forward for the long term business relationship, Juan.

Loren showed as expected and installed a kitchen faucet. He also found that much of a the existing plumbing underneath was corroded and in need if replacement. He ran to Home Depot to get what was needed and got the job done. His work looks nice from top to bottom, price was good and I didn't have to put up with big company antics. I'll definitely use him again.

Roger was on time, friendly and courteous! He fixed a seal in one bathroom and fixed the base of the other bathroom. He took his time and did the job well. I think I'll keep his name and number on the fridge door. However, I don't think we'll have any issues but if a friend or neighbor is is need of a good person to fix plumbing, Roger is da man! I have had so much trouble trying to get someone to take on my job. Because of some water damage, I was in need of a new a/c access door and repair to the surrounding ceiling. Eduaro responded to my request almost immediately, and scheduled a time to come take a look that same day. He took some measurements, told me his plans, and gave me a quote including materials within the hour. He arrived the next day ready to work. He was fast, efficient, professional, and polite and did a high quality job for a reasonable price. I absolutely recommend!

I'm glad that there's plumber out there who are honest and trustworthy! I was informed that they can check out what's wrong with our water heater for free estimate and that's just what they did! When they found out that it's more of electrical issue, They made recommendations and didn't charge for any trip or consultation fee. The next time we have plumbing issues, I'll definitely hire them again!!!

Richard exceeded our expectations. He truly went above and beyond to ensure excellent quality services. We are first time home buyers and purchased a fixer upper. Richard painted, completely reconstructed one of our cabinets in the kitchen, and did some plumbing work for us. He was very pleasant to speak with and patient when answering questions. His price is unreal for what you actually get!

I hired Steddy Plumbing to come do a simple repair on my toilets flow valve. The job was completed quickly and was done well. 4 stars instead of 5 because the appointment was at 2pm, and he arrived at 2:30. But he did text at 2pm telling me he would arrive in 30 minutes.

I was desperately needing a quick demo of a one piece tub/shower combo and an install of a new tub before tile work that was scheduled. Not only did Jeremy respond on short notice but he was on time and thorough in completing the job. He was professional and did an amazing job in a short amount of time. I would highly recommend him for his level of expertise and professionalism. I will not use any one else for future plumbing work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
